I don't understand why some people keep throwing his name out there. If he leaves Pittsburgh it's because he's tired of coaching. What makes you think he would come to Bama if he doesn't want to coach anymore?

Quit looking for reason when it comes to throwing names out there. I have seen the following names mentioned seriously:

Rush Probst
Bill Belichick
Bill Parcells

If he leaves Pittsburgh it'll be for the same reason that he won't come to Alabama - it ain't North Carolina.

Let's get one thing straight. All of you who believe that the only reason he would leave Pittsburgh is because he's tired of coaching are completely out of touch with reality. The reason he IS CONSIDERING leaving Pittsburgh right now (read USA Today yesterday) is because he and the Rooney's don't get along at all and he has made the public statement that he will let everyone know if he's leaving Pittsburgh next week.

There was also an interview done with an NFL Insider who said "if Bill leaves Pittsburgh, I wouldn't be suprised if he showed up in Tuscaloosa."

As for your thoughts Earle, I disagree completely. Just because he wouldn't go to a lousy NC State, doesn't mean he won't come to a lousy Alabama. The reason is that he can look at Alabama and see the exact same situation he entered when he joined Pittsburgh. A team with a HUGE tradition that desperately wanted to return to glory. NC State has no such tradition!

Also, I am baffled why people think that the only school someone is interested in in their Alma Mater. Have all of you forgotten about Vince Dooley and Pat Dye? Alma Maters don't mean as much in coaching as people think.

Besides the humidity would kill him..................:biggrin2:
That would probably keep him away more than anything....and I cant say that I'd blame him. Lol!

Bill Cower is a darn fine coach. He's a winner and we'd be lucky to have him. But when folks (seriously) mention him as a candidate, I automatically wonder why he'd choose us over other teams. I know we have fine facilities and money. But if we're gonna mention Cower, why not also mention Mike Holmgren or Lovie Smith? They're all fine NFL coaches. But as far as i know, none have a real reason to want to come to Alabama.

I dunno though. Maybe we'll learn that Cower is the new Bama coach on tuesday morning.

You guys are baffling! The reason Cowher's name is being brought up is because it was brought up originally by an NFL insider who was being interviewed in Pittsburgh. Cowher is unhappy and has said he is thinking of leaving Pittsburgh and will make his decision next week. Lovie Smith isn't going anywhere and as for Holmgren, there is talk of him leaving Seattle, but he is NOT leaving the NFL. The NFL Insider made the quote "I wouldn't be surprised if he (Cowher) ended up in Tuscaloosa". That is why it's being talked about. His name isn't being brought up out of the blue at all...it is a legitimate name who is thinking of leaving Pittsburgh and seems tired of the NFL.

I'm not saying that the NFL person is right or wrong, but from all indications and out of Cowher's mouth, he is thinking of leaving Pittsburgh as mentioned and will make his final decision next week (USA Today yesterday's copy).

Didn't he turn down his AM, NCSt? Why would he consider Bama?
If the 3.0-3.5 per year for 7 years is accurate I could see why. O'Brien will not top $2 million at NCSt. Cowher would be taking a pay cut, but so would Saban and no one seems to question why he would do that. If you want out of the pros, not many schools can keep you at a pro level salary, you are one of the schools that can pay.

http://www.wral.com/sports/football/ncaa/story/1108354/

In all, O'Brien could add up to $750,000 a year in incentives to his $1.1 million a year base salary under terms of his seven-year deal. He also is negotiating a contract with Adidas that could pay him $50,000 a year that would bump his annual minimum to $1.15 million, said North Carolina State athletics director Lee Fowler.

"This is a fair contract considering the market these days," Fowler said. "It's driven on the high end by performance. If we do really well, (O'Brien) will be paid really well."

According to our results, the most valuable NFL coach is Bill Cowher of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who has taken his team to the playoffs in 10 of his 14 seasons and who won his first Super Bowl last season, all while averaging $2 million a year in salary since taking over in 1992. His 14-year tenure in Pittsburgh has cost the team just $191,277 per point, the lowest of any coach in the league. Cowher, having begun his career well before the industry's salary explosion of the early 2000s, owns an average career salary that is lower than the estimated $2.9 million median. But even based on his current $4 million income, he'd rank as one of the league's best investments.

Golly, all of this is terribly interesting, but I don't think Cower is interested even if he does leave the Steelers. Didn't he build a very expensive house in NC recently? A friend of mine at work is a HUGE Steelers fan. He isn't sure if Cower is leaving or staying (or will be asked to leave) but one thing he is sure of is that Cower is tired and wants to spend some quality time with his family. Lou (my friend) expects Cower to take some time off and maybe return to coaching in a few years. Take that for what it's worth, but it IS coming from a guy who would jump off a bridge if the Steelers were to be disolved as a team or moved to another city.

There is one thing that is interesting to me about this story that has not been discussed. Cowher's family moved to Raleigh NC this past year and he's been an absintee father and he is VERY involved in his daugher's lives. If he leaves Pittsburgh, he could simply move to NC and wait until the Panthers job comes open...or (and this seems less likely to me) his family could now move one year later to Tuscaloosa.

I don't know what will happen, but talking of Cowher to me doesn't seem out of the relm of possibility. As a matter of fact, I truly believe he will leave Pittsburgh next week. His ultimate destination at this point seems unclear to me. Not to mention, talking of Cowher in terms of Bama at least as of today does seem a bit out of place only because EVERYBODY and I mean EVERYBODY believes Saban will have first (or is it now considered second) right of refusal. With that said, we do have to have a back up plan ready.

Re: Official Bill Cowher Thread

Man I wish!!! :eek2: Actually if I could pick any coach in football right now it would be him. You talk about motivation and discipline, there would be no doubt who is charge. I can't even imagine his reaction to seeing Tubby holding up his little hand. :biggrin2: And can you imagine the o-line coming to the sideline after letting the DE fly by them and level JPW? They might actually go to the other sideline. ;) But you are just teasing me, I don't think it would happen. But I can dream right?
