Game Thread: First CFP Rankings

SEC Teams plus Top 6:

11. Barn
10. Florida
6. Georgia
5. Clemson
4. Penn State
3. Alabama
2. LSU
1. Ohio State

Interesting.

So lsu has beat their current number 10 and 11 teams, and is number two!! Doesn't make a ton of sense to me

The Big 10 is actually better setup to get two teams in than the SEC is right now, so that's less than ideal.

Biggest takeaway for me is the statement that a loss to LSU essentially takes us out of the playoff discussion.

I didn’t watch the rankings release, so I have no idea if you are interpreting this based on the rankings or from what was said, though if based from what anyone from the ESPN crew said then I put no stock in it. They just like to talk in circles on this topic.

If Oklahoma was at 6 or 7 then I’d agree with you, but with Utah and Oregon at 7 and 8 then I feel pretty good. I certainly don’t want to put the theory to the test, but if we were to lose to LSU in a close game and then beat Auburn, and as long as Georgia doesn’t beat LSU, then I think we’d get in if everything else went chalk.

If we can’t beat LSU at home then barring a huge upset we don’t deserve to be in the playoffs and the critics using our schedule against will have been validated. This LSU team is good but they are no where near as good as their 2011 team.

I can't complain about the top 4 teams.
If we take care of LSU and beat Auburn and Ga...
Our future is in our own hands.

Meh, I want Bama to win NCs, but at this point, just win.

Not worried, just win. Lose and and we leave it up to other people...

Just win.
It would seem like that's the best way for things to occur, but there are a lot of factors that make regular season games less important to winning a championship.

It isn't coincidence that Alabama only has one undefeated season under Saban. Teams are extremely likely to lose sooner or later. Alabama has finished the regular season undefeated three times, they have one championship to show for it. They on the other hand have had 4 seasons in which they suffered a regular season loss, and then went on to win a championship.

You still have to take the win, obviously... but we're in an era now where the last few games mean way more than the rest. If you're playing your best football late, (and being well rested and healthy helps) then that's what matters the most. It probably shouldn't work this way, but the best case scenario for Alabama remains missing out on the SECCG but still making the playoffs.

It's a sad reality of the playoff, that beating LSU makes the path to a playoff easier but in some ways a championship more difficult. The posts that are like, yeah just beat LSU, Auburn, Georgia, then win two more playoff games, no sweat... might be missing the point that there might not be any team in the country that can actually do that.

Whoever wins it all will have to earn it but NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE can argue that Clemson doesn’t have a HUUUUUUUUGE advantage by playing in that dumpster fire [emoji91] of a league called the ACC. They’ll skate in and have 2 real games for their title. The Big 10 and SEC representatives will have 3 minimum BIG games just in their conference and then two more playoff games. So who’s “earned” their title more???

Truth be told I will take the confusion of the BCS over having to listen to Ron Burgandy 1 and Ron Burgandy 2 ever again.
Since you bring up the BCS it turns out the BCS formula is in total agreement with the committee on the Top 3 while the BCS has Clemson #4 and Penn State #5. That's probably more accurate as I think Clemson would be a slight favorite against Penn State. Thus far the committee has not really proven themselves to be any more accurate than the BCS formula as far as ranking teams.

I'm not suggesting it's somehow easy, I'm just saying at this point it's academic.

Some people like to beat the theory to death, but reality is Bama basically has a two-game schedule outside of post-season play this year, so put up or shut up.

Overall opponent record:
OSU: 39-28 (.582)
L8U: 43-33 (.566)
Bama: 36-41 (.468)

Just win.

So yesterday evening, we traded one fictional and useless ranking poll for another equally fictional and useless ranking poll, and the fans still talk about it.

Truly amazing.

Just slap the phrase "new and improved" on something and voila!

Looking at the Alabama schedule preseason 2019......whom BESIDES LSU would you have given any chance to actually beat us?

Maybe Auburn?

So do we play a one or two-game actual schedule?

What about Oklahoma? Prior to the season, who would you see beating OU?
Maybe Texas? Anyone else?

The cold hard reality is that the gap is now so large that - just as in 1979 - most of the big guns have 1-2 games a year and some filler. It's not really any different for us than it is for anyone else.

The Big 10 and SEC representatives will have 3 minimum BIG games just in their conference and then two more playoff games. So who’s “earned” their title more???

1) Who has Ohio St played up until now? Be honest.
2) Who has Penn St played up until now? MAYBE Michigan....Maybe.
3) Who has Alabama played up until now? I mean seriously, whom???

Now....Georgia and LSU may not have played murderous slates, but they've at least tried with Notre Dame and Texas - and both have played Florida in conference.

This is not the SEC of 2008 anymore.

As far as "earned their title more," there's not a little inscription on BYU's 1984 title that says, "Didn't play anyone worth a damn." It counts just as much as the 1992 Alabama title does.

The committee leaving Clemson out sends a loud and clear message—who you play in the regular season MATTERS.

No, they sent a different message.

"Hey Game Day, here's an easy story for you to run this weekend about how Clemson gets no respect! You can even start rolling the ball towards that eight-team playoff!"

Win and Clemson is in, and with that schedule a loss should eliminate them.
