Why do we not have a s/c coach listed on rolltide.com with the football coaches and support staff? Seems like most other programs do have someone in this position that is totally devoted to the football team--heck, even Texas AM just hired another one. I thought Shula's s/c guy was supposedly retained but moved under the umbrella of the entire athletic dept. Seems to me we should have someone in this capacity strictly for the football team, of course that's just one man's opinion. I thought Saban had someone in that capacity, but why is his bio not on the website?

This is in the online media giude.

Scott Cochran has joined the Alabama staff as
Head Football Strength and Conditioning
Coach. He comes to Alabama from the New
Orleans Hornets where he spent three seasons as
an assistant strength coach. His duties with the
Hornets included assisting with the exercise and
strength conditioning programs to help players
achieve and maintain optimal fitness throughout
the NBA season.
Prior to joining the Hornets staff, Cochran
worked for his alma mater Louisiana State, as an
assistant strength coach for the 2003-04
National Champion Tiger football team.
Cochran returned to LSU after starting his
career in the strength and conditioning field at
University Laboratory High School in Baton
Rouge, La. He held that position from 1998-2001 and then went back to
LSU as a graduate assistant for all sports from 2001-03. He was then
hired on to the full-time staff for the 2003-04 season.

I don't remember his name. Which I guess tells you something... :)

Lol...don't you think that's odd, Earle? We all like to make fun of fraudphoney, but at least he DID see the importance of this and it seemed to show in how physically dominating our '02 team was on the LOS....

The team was in better shape this year no doubt, but the strength level is still below what it needs to be, you can look at them and tell, plus the running game stinks and thats directly related to pushin iron. I hope its just a two year makeover and not a shortcoming of the current S&C staff

Part of it is that Fran and Shula, until his last year, had a lot of talent to work with, if you look at who's playing on Sundays. Also, some of Fran's stuff was smoke and mirrors, as some of the players have told me - getting help instead of spots on BPs, for example. The rest of it just takes some time, less time, of course, if you're using banned substances, which I think some of our rivals have...

I don't remember where, but I saw a comparison picture of a freshman player for Arkansas when he first showed up to college, and then one year later. The transformation was not natural.

I think the banned substances are rampant from HS to college and of course in the pros. Kids now a days coming out of highschool are the size of many pro athletes or bigger in the early 80's and back. Sure, the sport now being played year around and kids weight training year around has contributed but not that much.

Anyways, there's no doubt our OL is still behind on strength. It is just that obvious. I hope a second year in Saban's program will close the gap but will be enough to show a material difference in 08?

I don't think the strength and conditioning program has been as strong since Lebaron Caruthers left. I was suprised we didn't see more progress from Rocky's program since he worked under Lebaron.

If the banned substance you are refering to is the juice, I think rampant use is a bit strong. Testing for it is a high priority these days and getting caught at the HS and College level means some severe penalities for that athlete. Am I saying that kids still aren't doping, no, but it's definately not as prevelant as it used to be before the NCAA and the state HS commissions started cracking down on it. The League, that's another story.

As for our S&C program, I think we made some strides there. Completely new mindset in lifting and doing endurance work in one of the finest facilities in the SEC. I doubt you could find one player that would say our new S&C approach didn't help them this season. I look forward to seeing what Year 2 brings.

Here it is. This is the difference one year in the Arkansas strength and conditioning program makes. Malcolm Sheppard

I wonder how often teams or players are tested especially at the HS level? These "tests" aren't free and with the number of HS's, players within these HS's and the cost of administering these tests I'd be curious as to how frequent they are given and the odds of a player from your team being selected for testing.

The whole time I was in school I never heard the first word about it. There were a few that rumor and speculation usually followed if only in a whisper. I never knew for a fact that anyone ever did anything like that. I do know that no one got tested during my playing days though.

Holy freaking crap, there's definitely something amiss there...

Strength and Conditioning Staff (extracted from Rolltide.com)

Rocky Colburn, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
Scott Cochran, Associate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach/Football Strength and
Conditioning Coach
Eric Grantham, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach
Terry Jones, Assistant Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
Dedrick Agee, Athletics Intern
Michelle Martin Diltz, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach
Tommy Perry, Athletics Intern
Robert Sale, Athletics Intern
Jesper Sjokvist, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

If memory serves, Rocky Colburn was brought in by Mike Shula as the football strength and conditioning coach, replacing Ben Pollard. Colburn in turn was replaced by Scott Cochran soon after Saban took over. Unlike Pollard, Colburn was retained and reassigned within the athletic department.

That's HGH all the way there. The enlargement of the facial bones makes it pretty obvious. That kid's jaw, nose, cheekbones, and brow ridge are much more prominent in the second photo. Most likely he's also using some short half-life orals and/or test suspension along with it. Perhaps if he's resourceful enough, he got ahold of some of the older, more obscure AAS which are not on the standard steroid test panel but are being produced by some underground labs. It's incredibly easy not to get busted if you know what you're doing (or are being told what to do by an unscrupulous trainer).
