"Former infractions chairman critical of Alabama probe" - B'ham News Article

article said:
SCOTTSBORO - The longtime former chairman of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions testified Wednesday that he believed the NCAA went overboard in its 2002 prosecution of the University of Alabama football program.

Swank questioned the NCAA's finding of three major violations against Alabama and Keller and said the NCAA may have violated its own rules by using confidential sources.
I know this has been hashed & re-hashed many times, but Swank makes somes intersting statements against the NCAA & it's "practices."

I was just fixing to post a link to this but you beat me to it. Sounds more and more like the NCAA had it out for Bama period!!!!!!! If they broke their own rules, what kind of punishment will they get? Seems we got screwed over big time. Not saying we were completely innocent at all, but it seems that we got hammered way too severely IMO. I HATE the NZAA!!!!!!!

So they need to give us 10 more addl schollies for the next 4 years. Oh, and go ahead and give us 3 SEC championships and 2 MNCs and save a lot of hassle.;)

I guess my question is this: Swank, or the article at least, didn't mention much regarding the Means portion of the investigation; so were we "severely" punished for the things he mentioned regarding Smith, Locke, Carroll, etc?
To be honest, most people only bring up Means when they speak of our most recent probation, but these other allegations seem to have SEVERELY impacted Swank's view of the whole proceedings...interesting.

wow maybe there finally is some integrity and honesty from the ncaa regarding what they did to us...... even if the person producing the integrity and honesty has already LEFT the NZAA.

I hope Keller wins a fortune and the whole world sees just how the NZAA screwed Bama over. I know we deserved some punishment, but dang, we all but got the death penalty and now one of their ex top guys is saying that the NZAA may have broken their own rules in punishing us for breaking rules. All but ruined our program for several years and we wont even get so much as an apology from em. I HATE THE NZAA:mad2:

There is no way we will ever get anything back that was taken from us. However, maybe we could take down the NCAA and force a change. Start over and make sure nothing like this ever happens again. No school ought to ever go through what we went through. I wouldn't wish that fate upon my worst enemy, well maybe except Auburn. ;)

I've got a feeling Keller will get nothing out of this. However, for whomever is paying attention, the NCAA just got exposed. Unfortunately, I doubt any national media is paying attention.

If Keller does win and all this stuff that Swank is saying turns out to be true, the U of A needs to sue the NZAA. Seems like as many rules as the NZAA possibly broke, if true, then the U of A needs to hammer them just as hard as they hammered us!

Swank just turned "whistleblower". Wont be long before the media takes notice.

In my mind, there is nothing that would come out of this in favor of Bama; but it would be satisfying to see the NCAA's arrogance shoved back up where it belongs. :)

A change in public perspective would be favorable. The NZAA made us out to be the worst cheaters in the history of football besides SMU. If all of this is true, it at least shows that the NZAA had an agenda to nail Bama. And while I know some idiotic folks won't give a hoot, smart, reasonable COLLEGE FOOTBALL fans in general will see that we, while guilty of some charges, were actually cheated ourselves by the NZAA.

I wouldn't count on it; I haven't seen or heard anything about this case outside of an Alabama newspaper. I don't know if anything new has come out of this one that we hadn't already heard or been alluded to in the Cottrell case. I mean it's nice for at least a little bit of vindication for a former NCAA guy to say these things; but I think Swank has been pretty vocal about his dislike for the NCAA after he left. So we might have to take what he says with a grain of salt.

Honestly, I don't think Keller gets anything out of this and Alabama clearly won't. Swank's testimony was interesting, but all I kept thinking the whole time I was reading it was "what's this got to do with Keller and alleged libel/slander by the NCAA?" I wonder why it was admitted in the first place; it might get totally stricken from the record.

Means hasn't come up because Keller wasn't alleged to have any involvement with Means if I remember correctly. We were penalized the most for the Means fiasco, the NCAA just used Keller, Kenny Smith and Travis Carroll to claim we had a pattern of rogue boosters and "pile on." They needed to claim the pattern of rogue boosters to get some of their "evidence" in since it was barred by the statute of limitations. The dollar amounts claimed in the Means case is what I think really sunk us, that and he supposedly didn't get anything out of it. Of course based on that precedent, USC should come closer to the death penalty than we did; but I'm not holding my breath.

Bet your sweet butt that if the story were against us and not in our favor.... ESPN and everyone else in the media would be "all over it".

NZAA, ESPN, BARN... Most 4 letter organizations are not to be trusted..... not to mention the putrid smell when one draws close to them.... LOL!!! :biggrin2:

IMO it feels good to have the NCAA to eat some humble pie! The entire investigation was a joke from the start! Hopefully (but don't count on it) the NCAA publically admits to their mistakes involving this investigation.

About the only public stmt. we can expect from those genuises is one stating that BAMA is going back on probation since we "obviously" paid their former chairman to say those things & for our LOIC in the Reggie Bush case ;)

Re: "Former infractions chairman critical of Alabama probe" - B'ham News Article

Why are some of you saying that Swank's testimony will just be ignored by the national media. Do the national media services have some sort of conspiratorial relationship with the NCAA that would cause them to ignore this testimony? Seems to me that most media outlets are always looking for 'the big one' and it wouldnt matter who it was about. It makes for higher ratings for whatever media outlet they are selling.

Can you imagine a headline like "Former NCAA Infractions Chairman Critical of Alabama probe". It is a big deal, that might take down a giant (the NCAA). I mean what would a media outlet (like ESPN) have to lose if they featured that story on Sportscenter. Reporters love taking down big targets, its what they live for. It will be very interesting to see if programs like 'Around the Horn', PTI, Sportscenter, and College Football Gameday report on this, if they report on it at all.
