News Article: Former Wisconsin DB Leaving School for Miami WITHOUT Entering the Portal

I don't feel like Wisconsin has a lot to gain here. 🤷‍♂️

This sport is a mess though
I agree, Wisconsin should have granted the transfer. It wasn’t about playing, it was a family medical hardship. Fickell should have done the right thing and let the kid go home. JMO.

I missed that when skimming the article.

"[Lucas] ... requested a transfer after learning while home over the holidays that his father suffered a “serious, life-threatening illness,” according to Heitner."

Assuming that's true, Wisky shoulda helped the kid out.

At some point, i would hope the College football coaches start policing their own, outing anyone who violates the tampering rules, and reeling in the Wild West portal situation. But maybe they will just let chaos rein.

They say that they have evidence of tampering. I hope that this is true. But will the NCAA do anything about it in time for it to matter (or at all)? I doubt it.
I doubt it as well. Anything short of a post season ban would be meaningless..

I think @BamaNation brings up a valid point. There is still much we don’t know with this story. I’d like to know when Wisconsin first suspected “tampering” and when did the player withdraw from school? And when did the player’s father suffer the severe health issue?

My gut reading between the lines? Someone contacted the player from Miami, offering a sweeter agreement. Based on the agreement with Wisconsin, he was told it was binding for two years and his transfer portal application would be denied. His attorney told him to withdraw school stating “hardship” with his father’s illness. Denying a hardship transfer by Wisconsin would be terrible optics for the university and they will cave.

I could be wrong but this is a very smelly kettle of fish.

Suddenly, the players grabbed all of the power. . It has become the NBA. I’ll keep posting, but i have watched 3 playoff games, didn't watch semifinals and have no desire to watch the championship game. I don’t even know what date it’s on. My interest in this sport is quickly fading.
This is way worse than the NBA. They at least have a CBA, draft, and contracts that are enforceable. College football is absolute chaos.

Something (anything) is only worth what someone will pay for it.

This is the last chance for the ncaa to step up. Here we have a contract written in a way that gives r
Wisconsin. A little leverage when it's obvious no one had any before. Number 1 they need to make player ineligible and se and punish Miami if he enroll with loss of scholarships and ineligible for playoffs that would stop it now. Have to burn it down on this one.

Looks like the NCAA has already waived the white flag on this one too. It's total chaos.

Seems like UW could take him to court to enforce the contract he signed as part of the revenue share deal, recover the money, and potentially damages. If they had a revenue share deal that didn’t have those provisions in it then they need to get better lawyers.

If he received any money already.

Even if he hasn’t received a dime I sue for enforcement of the contract, assuming it has clauses that allow for that. Basically litigate anything you can to enforce whatever he signed. Force the issue, because if you don’t you can be sure his agent/lawyer is going to press for payment even though he is no longer playing for UW.

At some particular point these players need to learn this is a two way street.

Just wait. The courts are going to uphold the Pavia injunction ruling and find that the NCAA’s definition of eligibility is arbitrary and limits the individual’s (player) ability significantly to earn from NIL and therefore philosophically goes against free market opportunity.

So we will have players that can play for as long as a team (school) wants to pay them and bounce from school to because no one can enforce any contract they may sign.

So unrestricted transfer, agreements that mean nothing, and no one able to define what eligibility means nor what limits it.

Ain’t it just peachy?
