Re: FSU wrap-up: Alabama fails to match Seminoles' intensity
Watching him this season, I've come to realize his poor mechanics are not a new development. I can recall last season that many commented that he actually throws better on the run. I've seen this before...some guys simply can't pass from the pocket. I think JPW is one of these guys.
The truth is that our running game is suffering because we can't stretch the field. You can have all the DJ Halls, Kieth Browns and Mike McCoys in the world and if your QB can't deliver the ball accurately, then they are worthless. If you can't hit the open man, then a defense can pin its ears back and crash the line on every play.
In the infamous words of Jimmy Carter, "We have a crisis of confidence". The o-line has no confidence in JPW's ability to read defenses and get the ball out quickly and accurately. The wide recievers are clearly frustrated and disgusted.
A QB switch might not be the answer, but at this point, I think a change might do some good. Bama must find a way to stretch the field. If teams don't respect the deep threat, everything else breaks down. I would put McElroy in against Houston and let him air it out. May be then DJ Hall would be inspired to start running complete routes again.
I agree that McElroy lacks arm strength. I have been a JPW fan and thought he had what it took to be an effective SEC quarterback. However, I think my faith might have been misplaced.McElroy's biggest shortcoming is raw arm strength. For routes that really require the QB to hammer the ball in, I don't know that McElroy can be that guy.
There is also the issue of experience, which is a double-edged sword since he can't get it sitting on the bench. But that is a concern, particularly when it comes to making the proper read. Back in the WCU game, when McElroy threw his touchdown pass, Saban crawled his rear as soon as he got back to the sideline because he had Baron Huber wide open in the flat and should have seen it. Instead, he threw to a fairly well-covered Walker and was just as likely to have gotten picked as he was to have thrown the touchdown.
