UGA reports violation with Crowell

this is ridiculous. from earlier reports this was one of crowell's best memories and had some of the highest impact on his recruitment. not saying this definitely sent him to georgia, but it definitely helped, and the penalties aren't exactly that severe.
The penalty for both Crowell and Jawga is going to be when they get elephant stomped when they play the Tide. I can count on one hand how many rushing yards they'll have against our defense. :biggrin2:

You must have a whole lot of extra fingers on that hand .... didn't MSU have like -40 or so total yards against us? :)

It's widely known that some coaches will commit violations when the rewards outweigh the consequences. Chalk this one up as such an instance. Some NCAA rules, like Gene Chizik, have zero teeth.

I remember when that happened..We all said JaJa should get punished..Should have expected the NCAA to only slap them on the wrist really hard..

That was only a slight tap on the wrist and will have absolutely no effect on UGA recruiting. I remember when it happened, too. A team formation without a RB.....Crowell suited up and put in that position.....saying "the position is yours".
Looks like the "didn't know" has caught on in recruiting violations.

That was seriously a great and creative move by Richt. Imagine the feeling of destiny Crowell must've felt, and the reverence the coach and the players were giving him. Georgia made Crowell feel more special than Bama was able to. That's why they got him.

I think there was a little more to this than just the Crowell angle. If I am not mistaken, you had coaches present while having players line up. I even heard they walked through a couple of plays. If that is indeed the case, you have a violation in recruiting and offseason practise sessions. keep in mind, that CMR is in a desperate situation and he knew what he did was wrong and went through with it anyway. It was not like CMR committed a minor violation trying to get more in depth in the kids personality or background, he knowingly broke a rule to get the kid signed on the dotted line. After the CNNSI report about background checks, I am glad that a CNS pushes the bump rule in an effort to find out as much as possible about the kids we recruit. Had CMR done that, I have no problem but what he did gets into murky waters. If CMR would push the bump rule to get more background info, maybe he would spend less time reading newspaper articles about his players being arrested. It seems his numbers are worse than UF under Meyer or UT under Fulmer.

Well said ^

For everyone at UGA to say he is such a good man, he breaks rules left and right. His players have lots of "run-ins" with the law and multiple arrests. You think if he was such a good man that he would rub off on the kids. I think with all this coming out it shows his true colors. He will try and keep his job at all costs. Maybe he is rubbing off on the kids (in the wrong kind of way.)

Also, I think that the AJC posted a write up about what occured on this visit by Crowell before UGA submitted a violation report to the NCAA. In other words, it was widely known what was going on during this kid's (and others kids') recruitment before UGA ever said a thing to the NCAA. Of note, recall the Ray Drew signing day press conference, that is now getting some attention, where he had 2 former UGA football players present. There were a lot of things UGA did this year creatively in recruiting that is bringing even more of a poor spotlight on their football program.

I think CMR IS a good guy, but he also takes the "good guy" approach to discipline. He's more of the "concerned friend" type than the "feared/respected head coach" type.

A good bit of these kids NEED a hard-nosed disciplinarian to keep them in line, not a soft-spoken nice guy kindly asking them to be good. I think THAT is CMR's downfall when it comes to keeping his players in check.

I just don't see how you can say that when all the facts point to Richt being a cheater. I've heard so many times "he's a good Christian man". Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Baker were "good Christian men". They were also liars, thieves and hypocrites. Just because somebody claims to be something, doesn't mean they are. Usually it's the ones who are self proclaimed that you need to watch out for.

I'm not sure how you get "all the facts point to Richt being a cheater." Even though the episode with Crowell WAS an NCAA violation, it's not like Richt lined up some hookers and blow for IC's official visit. I don't even think UGA has been busted for anything serious in his tenure at all. What exactly are "all the facts?"

The major "character" knock on Richt is that he has players get arrested. Like I said, I believe the main reason for that is because Richt tries to be the soft-spoken, concerned friend to the players rather than in-your-face disciplinarian that a lot of these kids need.

Well my thing about Richt is he has made mistakes and so have we all. I do not claim to be the most outstanding person but I try my best. Yet no one is watching over me looking for every mistake I make. In just watching over the years though, Richt has gone after some very questionable athletes with character issues. He has had a lot of those getting arrested. The new incident with Crowell and Drew is very damaging too. He is on the hot seat and is showing he will do whatever it takes to keep his job. Yet the thing that made me change my mind about Richt was when he wanted his kids to run to the end zone and get a celebration penalty against Florida. That showed no class and for him to do and allow that kind of childish behavior, it doesn't speak well for his morals and principles.

Actually, IMO, that just illustrates exactly what I've been saying. He's just NOT the hard-nosed, straight-edge type like Coach Bryant, Coach Saban, etc. Richt wants to be "buddy buddy" with his players, so he let them do their little organized celebration. It's the same reason he holds pool parties and cancels two-a-days.

Have you ever seen/known a parent that tries to be more like a "friend" to their child than a parent? That's what it seems like Richt is doing with his players. That approach just doesn't garner as much respect IMO, so you'll have more transgressions, as we've seen with Richt...
