Georgia wrap-up: Meet the new boss, same as the old boss
by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief

A month ago, Alabama played at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Three weeks ago, that changed to Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Now you can add another name: the Hollywood Bowl.

True freshman WR Ryan “Hollywood” Williams and QB Jalen Milroe combined to put on a show and ultimately come back to beat a Georgia team that the Crimson Tide had led at one time 28-0, a lead that seemed insurmountable at the time. But Georgia hasn’t become one of the best teams in college football by laying down and accepting its fate; the Bulldogs battled back, ultimately went up 34-33 and suddenly, Kalen DeBoer’s first truly big game as Alabama’s head coach seemed poised to become his first bitter disappointment.

And then, “The Play” happened.

Great summary - I think not having Russaw at 100% limited our ability to get as much pressure from our 4 man front as Jess pointed out. Even though the guys behind him are great pure pass rushers, they aren't as tough as he is against the run. The staff adjusted to that by often not even using a Wolf player, but using Bandit in that spot. That helped against the run, and even though both Latham and Overton are pretty good rushers, they aren't quite Russaw there either. UGA also seemed to figure this out and when we went heavy, passed and when we went light, they ran right at it. I'm also still not sure why we continue to use the 3 man front with the wolf pulled slightly off the LOS between the two DTs. It's almost like when they tried to use Anderson as an inside rusher and it takes your quickest rusher away from what he can really do best in space.

Without Russaw Alabama simply could not affect Beck with 4 men at the LOS, no matter the combination of guys on the field. Have to figure that out. Can't be that reliant on one player on defense. Too many very talented QBs on your schedule.

Great expression for explaining the second half. "We were playing the clock."
I hope our play callers got this message.

Yeah. At halftime, I was seriously pondering a final score along the lines of 56-10 or similar, then wound up with a near heart attack in the fourth quarter.

I wasn't sure if we had backed off or if Georgia had picked up their game out of desperation.

After their success moving the ball on their last two possessions I knew that Alabama was going to give up some points. They were figuring it out. But I had no idea just how conservative DeBoer was going to get. That is what led to their comeback. Every short Alabama possession gave them more hope, and sucked the confidence out of the stadium.

agreed. We just don't have another like him unfortunately. Robinson and Koht are really good speed rush guys, but not as stout against the run, and all the other options are good against the run, but not as much on the pass rush. The only real other option would be sliding Campbell down to OLB, but I don't think we'd want to take him out of the middle of the field on a consistent basis, even though Jefferson has also been playing really well at ILB. Pierre might get there before long and was getting reps last night. Maybe one of the lighter Bandits like Renaud or Keeley could get some reps at Wolf to try to fill the gap until some of the younger guys develop more.

Good write up and comments. Any way you slice it after the 28 to 0 lead Georgia out played us by a wide margin. We lost our momentum and they took over. For what ever reason the offense played bad in the second half. Actually, once we lost the momentum is was close to a total collapse except for the last two series of downs. One great offensive play and one great defensive play gave us the win.

We took their best and still won. That speaks volumes of the team.

During halftime I seriously considered going back and DELETING every post I'd made criticizing Milroe's poor mid-range passing and his apparent inability to progress through his reads(!).
Man, did Jalen Milroe prove me wrong ... until the 3rd Quarter, anyway.
‼
I never would have believed JM could adjust his play; I thought it was too late to try and change him.....

I have never been so happy to be wrong.
🤷‍♂️

Great breakdown! One thing I think needs to be pointed out - to us mainly; I think opposing DC's already know - is that our freshmen are terrors that are only going to get better. When they've gained a little more experience, watch out CFB!

I agree. I didn't think we let off the gas. UGA just adjusted to what we were doing and played with desperation.

Yep. Georgia is a very good team, playing like their lives depended on a victory in the second half, while we came out in the second half and were just playing not to lose. Our young defense, especially the DB's got a good look at what a good QB can do when he gets hot. I think we gained a lot of experience that will help us down the road.
