So if I'm driving through any other country in the world, in a car with no tags and the only ID I have on me is my Alabama DL...you mean to tell me that I won't go to jail for a few minutes? I'll just be ticketed and released?

[Point of order] I believe many have argued in some cases that being like the rest of the world is not necessarily desirable...just because his treatment was similar to what he would've received in Germany or some other foreign country doesn't make it right...we are America for goodness sake, and we pride ourselves for standing out from the rest of the world [end point of order]. That being said...long live Alabama's immigration law!

And dictatorship. The POTUS is given the privilege of using the military however he sees fit. He apparently can kill US citizens whenever he feels like it as well. Amazingly, Hitler had to keep it a secret while Obama does not.
So, you're saying Obama is worse than Hitler.

At least, when it comes to killing folk.

All of you people complaining and saying this will "give Alabama a black eye", etc. - you do realize that if he did this in Germany that the same thing would happen to him, right? Even as a German citizen, if he is out driving an un-registered vehicle without his driver's license and proof of citizenship anywhere in Germany that he will be detained until he can prove who he is. Oh, and while he would be released when he could prove it he would also be slapped with a couple hefty fines.

Neither he, nor his bosses, will see this as an embarrassment, an injustice, or any other type of negative for the state of Alabama or the U.S. What they will see it as is an embarrassment to him and to his company.

Just on an "oh by the way" kinda tip: All charges were dropped. And everybody's gone back to normal life. I can tell the guy hello if you all would like me to.

My thoughts exactly. Yeah it's not great to arrest a Mercedes Executive, but he can't carry around his information? Kind of have to keep that handy when in another country.

I am somewhat disturbed by this "well in Germany" line of argument. Since when has anyone in the United States cared one whit about what the rest of the world does? I could not care less if they took you out and shot you in Germany for not having your papers. It makes no difference to me.
It would if you were the one without your papers. Now, would you mind standing over there next to that wall whilst I load my rifle. :biggrin2:

In this day and age we're in, I'm glad a foreigner without a valid passport and visa was taken into custody. I don't care who he is.

Well, when the person involved is from Germany and the insinuation is that he and other people would see this incident as a negative for Alabama then what would happen in Germany is very applicable to this incident.

People lambasted the law because it's "racist" and would encourage racial profiling. Then this happens, which obviously shows an example of unilateral, non-racial application of the law and the same people lambast it because it was a Mercedes exec that got arrested and is an "embarrassment" to Alabama. The simple fact is that any law-abiding person from anywhere in the world would expect the same treatment, at best, anywhere else in the world if they were caught in his situation.

The only real, functional negatives that have come from this are from a) people who were previously employing illegal immigrants and b) pearl-clutching libs spreading misinformation.

I saw a quote from Mercedes...they called it "unfortunate" and said they plan to better educate their German employees about how to comply with Alabama state laws.

They didn't mention U.S.laws, it was only the harsh Alabama law that was used against them. The "papers please" law, if you can't produce your official documents you get a trip to jail.

I think it was the St.Louis newspaper that had an editorial this week encouraging Mercedes to operate in their state, and avoid this type harrassment.

http://www.stltoday.com/news/opinio...cle_b5cc5237-d199-570c-8735-caa81e247249.html

The head of the state's pension system, David Bronner, told the Associated Press about Alabama's immigration law: "You are giving the image, whether it's valid or not, that you don't like foreigners, period."
Our state has many advantages over Alabama. We are the Show-Me State, not the "Show me your papers" state. Our Legislature is hostile on the immigration issue, but not as hostile as Alabama's or Arizona's.

Unlike in Alabama, our law enforcement officials won't check immigration status unless presenting you for incarceration on other offenses.
I have to credit the supporters of this law...even in the face of a massive national backlash, very vocal opposition from the religious community, farmers watching crops rot in the fields, long lines for everybody doing anything State Government related...even after arresting a German official with Mercedes for not carrying the correct identification papers, even after all that they remain stubborn to the end.

The sad thing is they are dragging all Alabamians down, just not the ones who support this.

When Beason was labeled in Federal Court, by a judge, as "racist" that should have been enough to get rid of this law. But at least his leadership position was stripped by the other GOPers, evidently they weren't confortable being led by a racist. They will just let him write ugly laws.

yup, the citizens want rule of law and respect for borders.... and they support people being punished under the law when they break those rules. i can see how the rest of our corrupt nation doesn't like that mindset.

I saw that article, and wondered if I went through St Louis with no tag and no drivers license, would I get away without showing my papers (IE drivers license, registration, proof of insurance). Maybe, the paper was saying that only foreigners from Germany would get away with it if they were doing business in Missouri, but what if that German was carrying a dirty bomb and was sympathetic to Al Qeida?
The law in this case did as it was intended to do. The law nor the citizens of Alabama did nothing wrong. The exec from Mercedes was the one driving a car (a rental no less) with no tag and did not have his license nor passport on him. If Mercedes has to tell executives that you do not need those papers while in the US but only need them while in Alabama, our federal system is not doing it's job and this law is needed in more places than Alabama.

Some of you guys embody cutting your nose off to spite your face so deeply I can hardly believe it.
Let me translate that for you:

"Some of you guys [support enforcing federal law at the state and local level since the feds won't or can't do it adequately themselves] to [help alleviate problems caused by illegal immigration which will incidentally cause issues for those who have previously benefited by the non-enforcement of those laws] so deeply I can hardly believe it."

This likely would have happened regardless of the law which we know some of you HATE. If you go to a foreign country you had better be able to produce documentation at ANY time if you want to minimize the possibility of problems. I know people from other countries here on a VISA who say they must be able to produce that VISA at anytime. To say this is somehow a black eye is completely ridiculous.
