The trillion the Fed injected was because liquidity was becoming a problem, as banks scrambled to cover inter-bank obligations...
So we had international banking liquidity problems because of this decision in Italy? I had not heard that. Makes sense, but I had not heard it.

No one loses here. The interest continues to accrue and the payments are added to the end of the mortgage. The only concern would be liquidity from the banks.
Honestly not sure if interest is on hold or not, but yeah, there's a way to do this to remove the burden. Banks will HAVE to act, as there are going to be a lot of folks short on cash soon.

This just disappoints me.
‘It’s Just Everywhere Already’: How Delays in Testing Set Back the U.S. Coronavirus Response
Dr. Helen Y. Chu, an infectious disease expert in Seattle, knew that the United States did not have much time.

In late January, the first confirmed American case of the coronavirus had landed in her area.... Dr. Chu had a way to monitor the region. For months, as part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region.

To repurpose the tests for monitoring the coronavirus, they would need the support of state and federal officials. But nearly everywhere Dr. Chu turned, officials repeatedly rejected the idea. ...

By Feb. 25, Dr. Chu and her colleagues could not bear to wait any longer. They began performing coronavirus tests, without government approval. ... Federal and state officials said the flu study could not be repurposed because it did not have explicit permission from research subjects; ... On Monday night, state regulators told them to stop testing altogether."

A little bit of flexibility in the face of an emergency goes a long way.

1. The projection is just that. It assumes their will be no change in behavior so the growth is not stymied. When people do change behavior that changes everything. and

2. China changed behavior. The government ordered it and the people there are conditioned to be compliant. They locked down a province. 60 million people were ordered to stay home and they did.

3. China likely is underreporting. I have now heard from two independent sources that up to two millions were dead from this in China. I take each with a huge grain of salt.

4. If Americans want to end the already draconian and soon to grow more so measures to restrict movement then they must demand testing. That's the only way to change this from the shotgun approach to a precise target that lets everyone else return to work and school.
On that website I’ve been watching that shows case count, the deaths number went from 41 yesterday to 50 now. I think there are more, as I believe there have been some deaths that weren’t attributed to the virus due to lack of testing. Not a lot, but surely some.

i ran with a friend last night and he is trying to figure out what he is going to do with his business. he has a small company (10-20 employees I think) that makes displays, etc. for major trade shows. he was telling me that due to the cyclical nature of the business he generally keeps 1-2 months of payroll in reserve. he said they started getting cancellations about 4 weeks ago and had to start dipping into his reserves, and as of this week they have no work at least through june.

he's trying to figure out his options, but none of them look very promising.

.

I have been stressing that with those who say testing will show the fatality rate is much lower - if you accept that there are unidentified cases then you have to accept that some of those unidentified cases resulted in a death. The only way to find out what the true numbers are is to test test test test test test

On the flip side, the CDC believes that many people in the US have already died of this and we are unaware because they were not tested. They went into other cause of death stats (flu, pneumonia, etc.).

I saw in the local news this morning that the first person here with the virus that did not contract it via travel is critical. A 40 year old police officer that Had Gone to the Houston Rodeo. 😮

Gonna go ahead and post this here. Sorry for the length.

So, we need to have a short conversation about politics and truth. I don't much believe in politics but I do believe in truth. I do my best to tell it. I will do my best to call out those who tell something other than the truth whether it be my friends, family, or politicians of any stripe.
I want to address facts as part of the truth. The facts are the facts. We have to agree on that. Facts can be backed up with evidence. The evidence is more than just words. It consists of past experience and learning. It helps us form our understanding of the world that was, is, and is yet to come. The evidence helps us to form educated opinions. Please do not leave off the word educated in that sentence, for that is critically important when we decide to whom we will listen in the days ahead. We should listen to those with knowledge and experience. We should shun those who spread disinformation for whatever reason. Lies will help none of us and we all need to call out the lies.Just like the facts are the facts the lies are the lies for they are not based in fact. We can have a difference of opinion, but facts and lies can be proven based on the evidence.Either you believe truth or you believe lies. Either you view the world as it is the best you can or you create a delusion that does not represent reality. You have a choice in that. When the facts do not fit your worldview one has to change. Since the facts do not change unless the circumstances or our understanding of them changes we must change our view of the world when it does not conform to the facts.
I hate having the need to say all of that, but it's needed. Too many are in denial. Too many do not want to open their eyes. I urge you please to be open to new, if scary, realities. The people you love depend on it for their life, especially if they are sick or elderly. They need you to look beyond yourself to those who aren't as strong or young or healthy as you. They need you to be cautious just as much for them as for you.
I am no epidemiologist, though I did study it in general in both undergrad and grad schools. I have been and will continue to try to provide fact and evidence based information to you. Hopefully some of that information will be helpful to you.
I will say things at times that are political. I will say things at times that should not be political in a normal world but will seem political to some because they have trouble discerning and accepting facts. That is the harsh reality. Remember, our opinions can differ and I can accept them in good faith if they were formed with facts as a guide and not delusional or magical thinking.
I have been and will be wrong sometimes. I am human just like you. I can accept correction based in evidence that contradicts my understanding and I am willing to admit when I have erred.
There are some scary things out there. The facts about CoViD-19 can be frightening. Sometimes the situation seems surreal. We can easily fall prey to a sense of panic. The facts will help us all be on the same page and will give us a sense of comfort. They will be our foundation along with the care we give our fellow humans. Our foundation will prevent our fear from turning into panic.
This is a time for logic. This is a time for calm. This is a time for compassion. And maybe it's a time for forgiveness and cooperation.
Giving in to fear will not help. We must be smart and make deliberate and rational choices. Fear includes being fearful that our favorite politician will look bad or lose an election. The truth is more important than fear.
Let's work together on the real problems we face. Let's try not to make them worse by bickering or by ignoring reality or by always assuming the worst in each other. Let's at least try. Just a little?
Sorry for the long read.

The truth - America doesn't value the elderly. If this disease was killing 15% of children aged 0-5 instead of the very old, we would not have a single person downplaying its severity. We would not have a single person complaining about the economic impact of the decisions that we are making to save their lives. Trump would have jumped on this from the outset because he would have been a pariah even among his followers if he had done less.

The Trump Presidency Is Over
It has taken a good deal longer than it should have, but Americans have now seen the con man behind the curtain. MARCH 13, 2020

Taken together, this is a massive failure in leadership that stems from a massive defect in character. Trump is such a habitual liar that he is incapable of being honest, even when being honest would serve his interests. He is so impulsive, shortsighted, and undisciplined that he is unable to plan or even think beyond the moment. He is such a divisive and polarizing figure that he long ago lost the ability to unite the nation under any circumstances and for any cause. And he is so narcissistic and unreflective that he is completely incapable of learning from his mistakes. The president’s disordered personality makes him as ill-equipped to deal with a crisis as any president has ever been. With few exceptions, what Trump has said is not just useless; it is downright injurious.

I agree. No way he retains enough support now. The curtain has fallen and the man behind it has been exposed.
