Good luck with Saban

There is no hatred of Saban from me- just dissapointment I guess. To be honest with you, coach Les Miles has kind of grown on many LSU fans. Record aside, he isn't flashy, good looking, or all that media savy. However, he can recruit and he has shown the ability to learn from his mistakes. Also he has shown the ability to do two things that CNS couldn't while at LSU. Beat the snot out of weaker opponents (see UAB), and not give up the big play at the end of the game (see Arkansas and Iowa). As far as my user name- I am about as Cajun as could be (South Lafourche area), and am proud to be a Registered Coon ...;)

I believe that with Saban at Alabama, there will be a year after year 3 team race in the west between LSU, Bama, and Auburn with Arkansas sprinkled in every decade or so.

I don't. I look for Auburn and LSU to decline over the next 3 years. Miles should have been undefeated with Saban's recruits this season and he'll continue the decline over the next few years.
Also, without the aid of Bama being on probation, and with Bama now having a competent coach, Tubberville will struggle to recruit.
Watch as their balloons start to deflate!

You know I think Les Miles is a better coach than many give him credit for. Even Saban found a way to lose some games. For that matter so did Bear.

Classy post Coon and welcome!

Before you coronate Saban as the god of football, look at his record while at LSU. Even the years that we won the SEC (other than 2003) our record was not as good as it was the last 2 years. So if you look at it like that Miles is winning more with sabans players than saban did:cool2:

Bamaman23 is no longer with us.
Hey bayou, have you got one of those light things that UFO`s use to beam `em up? ;)

Welcome to the board Supercoon. I`ve always enjoyed my trips down to Baton Rouge when we play ya`ll. Ralph and Kacoos and the tailgating outside Tiger stadium make it worth the trip.

When Saban was coaching Russell was a freshman, Bowe was a sophomore, Davis was a sophomore, Landry was a sophomore etc. When these guys were playing for Saban they were Freshmen/Sophomores, Miles got them when they were Juniors and Seniors. There is a difference in playing with freshmen and sophomores compared to Junior and Seniors. Maturity and game experience make a world of difference.

Though we can't know for sure and it's pure speculation. I'd wager that if Saban had the LSU team of 2005 and 2006 his record wouldn't have been any worse. Coach Miles has done an excellent job at taking what Saban did and running with it. They both are very good coaches just different approaches.

Freshman and sophmores, we were loaded with em all of 2006

RTR!

Or Saban's classes got better and better as he built up LSU. Most people feel your team this year was the most talent rich team in the country. The real standouts though weren't recruited by Miles.

I agree with the not coronating Saban just yet. The talk of "When do you think Saban will win our next NC" is somewhat silly.

On the flipside, don't get ahead of yourself coronating Les Miles either. It's not uncommon for new coaches to come in and have immediate success the first few years with another coach's players, then fizzle off. I seem to remember another LSU coach named Gerry Dinardo who went 7-4-1, 10-2, 9-3 his first 3 years only to fizzle to 7-15 in his final 2 years. There was also a guy named Mike Archer who preceeded Dinardo by starting 10-1-1 and 8-4 only to get canned after going 9-13 his next two years.

My only point is that to correlate Miles' last 2 seasons with long-term success isn't accurate. My gut tells me that he'll be a good coach, but he's only proven that he can coach the players that were there (and those were some darn good players) to decent success. He still has to prove he can be the CEO and maintain the momentum that the program currently has over the long term.

So far Miles hasn't proven that he's moved LSU forward from where Saban left it. Saban took a 3-8 team and won a NC in 4 years (his players) and never won fewer than 8 games in a season while Miles had the benefit of taking over a 9-3 team that was 2 years removed from the National Championship.

Hope this doesn't sound like I'm trashing your coach cause I'm not. Just saying that I don't think you can compare Miles' 2 years worth of games, especially considering the situation he walked into, to Saban's track-record at LSU. It's just too soon.

Saban's recrords had a lot to do with quarteback play. Saban wanted Russell to take the job and not back into it...the QB shuffle cost LSU a couple of games in 2004. A couple of years before that Marcus "QB draw" Randall cost Saban many other games. As usual, the defense was still really good.

Many LSU fans NOW point out his record, but he was basically handicapped or helped by his quarterback.

I think Saban did LSU a world of good. He made them consistently competitive in the SEC and he mainly did this by getting the top recruits to come there. I think the jury is still out with Miles. LSU had the players to go all the way this year. I thought they definitely had the best overall team in the SEC.

LSU did have the talent to go all the way and we probably should have lost only 1 game this year (Florida). I think it is too much to ask any team to play 4 top 10 teams on the road and go undefeated. As far a Saban or Miles and their long term longevity, the one who can reload every year with good talent and maintain a good staff will win out in the end. I believe that CNS has proven that he can do that and CLM is well on his way to doing the same. I hope that the rivalry that is shaping up will dwarf the rivalry that we currently have with everyone's plan B school in that little school towards Georga.

Beating Auburn has been - and will always be - priority number one in Tuscaloosa. Period. The thing is that the LSU-Bama match-up is definitely becoming more heated, and if we get a Saban turnaround like you guys...it could become the battle for the SEC West.
