News Article: Good Read by Ivan Maisel on Bryant/Paterno...

Great article.

Makes some of the "we shouldn't do anything to honor JoePa in our own house" talk sound all the more childish.

I'm going to stand and applaud the man, he deserves nothing less. That article just makes you see how deeply these two programs are connected. I feel like we're welcoming back a long lost friend.

Here again, I have to disagree. If you can site me one instance where ANY opposing team's fans so honored Coach Bryant, or for that matter, any Bama coach going back to Frank Thomas and Wallace Wade, I might reconsider. But I have never seen such an event and just don't think we should be starting a precedent any time soon.
Let's compare the PSU vs Bama game to say.... a political convention. It would be like being at the Democratic Convention just before the election and saying Hey! I've got a great idea. Let's have a standing ovation for John McCain to honor his many years of service, before we kick off the proceedings.....
I'm sorry but as much as I admire Joe Paterno, I'm not going to cut him any slack whatsoever on gameday. And that's JMHO....

i agree, i dont have a problem clapping for the guy but anything else is too much

Put JP upon on the screed and acknoledge his record; show some video of the 79 game. Put CB up on the screen and acknoledge his record etc. Put CPB on the screen and ack his record and wish the greatest coach ever a happy birthday. Finishish w/ a big roll tide beat PSU/yea Alabama. Kick Off. End w/RJYH. Perfect.

Democrats vs. Republican is a lot different than Alabama vs. Penn State

We wouldn't stand and clap for Tommy Tuberville, no matter what he did.

JoePa and PSU are different. He's not an arch-rival, and neither are they. We've always had respect for each other. It's a football game. We're not cheering for the North Koreans or the Iranians.

If you can't find it in you to stand and clap for someone who's dedicated his life to his profession, and done it in an honorable manor, what can you stand and clap for?

Your analogy is even worse.

Penn State / Bama = Democrat / Republican

Tommy Tubberville = Talibarn.

I remember that 1959 Liberty Bowl as if it were yesterday. I watched that game in the company of people of color. At first, I was mildly hurt that they pulled openly for PSU (this was in Tuscaloosa). Then, I thought "Why should they pull for Bama?"

I think people are confused about what some of us are proposing. Simple applause and respect. Don't boo. Nobody is asking to have some sort of halftime ceremony where we name it Joe Pa Field at Bryant-Denny-Beaver Stadium.

Well put! Some people think we're talking about a "roll out the red carpet, the Pope is coming to town" type ceremony. But what's wrong with a nice ovation out of respect to what he's done in CFB?

One of Ivan's best columns.

As far as Coach Paterno is concerned, he's always been one of the classiest coaches in any sport. Give him his well-earned respect on Saturday.

Then pull like hell for 'Bama to beat them to a pulp!

Black Warrior, Duke honored their own, Coach Wallace Wade, of course. Even though Duke has been & is an upcoming opponent, that doesn't count, of course. And, Coach Stallings has been honored by Texas A&M. Some of that was for leading their Aggies to victory in the Cotton Bowl over Bama, of course.

Somewhere, if Katrina didn't get it, I have a photo of Coach Bryant leaning on a goal post in Tiger Stadium, which I carefully removed from LSU's yearbook, Gumbo. I wasn't sure which year, but research indicates the '82 edition. Link: 1982 LSU GUMBO YEARBOOK BEAR BRYANT WINS RECORD - eBay (item 250647664048 end time Oct-06-10 13:39:05 PDT)

Please understand, I'm not suggesting we give any special honor to Coach Paterno. Let Penn State honor him. Now, honoring ole Diddy is a different matter. Coach Bowden is and always has been a Crimson Tide fan.

:biggrin2:

From the article (about 2/3 the way down):

"On the day of the game, Gryska said, the Crimson Tide filed out of their dressing room under the bleachers and emerged onto the field somewhere around the 50-yard-line.

"We're coming out to warm up," Gryska said. "That whole section stood up and gave Coach Bryant a standing ovation. Joe walked over and stood there and greeted him real casual."

No. 6 Alabama defeated No. 5 Penn State, 31-16."

I say we give him a standing O and then go kick their collective @ss.

... respectfully ... I would counter that the game doesn't start until the clock and ref says so ... and even then it will be between the kids in uniforms. I will not be there but if I were, Joe PA would get my standing O. I remember.
