Gov. Bentley give Alabama a Black Eye

Ugh . . . at least he's being honest and getting it all out there now. He might want to go ahead and forget about any fundraising stops in Mtn. Brook for his re-election bid (assuming he makes it that far, which is doubtful at this point). I would say for him to go ahead and forget about re-election period, but it's Alabama.

I challenge those that would read your comment to NOT dismiss it off-hand, and give it due consideration. It is, in fact, a true statement.

And if he had professed his atheism you'd be talking about how courageous he was to take a stand for his views in the face of criticism.

There's a difference between stating your religion and making a statement that effectively says you need to be Christian to be favored during my administration. If he'd said, "Only atheists are my brothers, and I want you to be my brother," or something to that effect, it would have been just as boneheaded.

Keep in mind that he's just accepted a position to represent the interests of all Alabamians.

I didn't really see it the way you did. He was speaking at a church to a church group and I believe he was referring to brothers and sisters in-Christ. He was encouraging those who had not accepted Jesus to do so and join the brotherhood.

I didn't hear speech...I know he has proposed making it easier for start up businesses by reducing the red tape (I have some thoughts on that, don't know if he does or not) and by resolving the homeowner's insurance problems in South Alabama (for me it's not about coastal homes, but those of us who live 20 miles from the coast).
I voted for him, and I want to see what he does. I don't care about his religious views, at this point; if he starts down that road with banners a-flutter, I will rethink my position.

He didn't say anything about his administration. He was in a church speaking from a pulpit about his faith. He's a Christian. He wants you to be a Christian. That doesn't mean he is going to have you arrested if you are a Muslim.

How did you get "arresting non-Christians" from "favoring Christians" ???

It's his belief. Fine. It doesn't change the fact that it's absolutely boneheaded to make such a public statement within a few days of taking office unless that's the part of your constituency that you're going to focus on during your administration - b/c anybody with half a brain knows that such a statement will alienate your non-Christian constituency (e.g. he's evidently not going to be after the non-Christian vote for re-election). This means that he doesn't mind offending his non-Christian constituents with such a statement, which no doubt leads some to wonder what else he might not mind offending non-Christians on, especially on social issues.

In other words, it's not just the content of the statement, but the fact that he decided to go ahead and make that statement publicly.

Yes, he did talk about his administration during his speech--he made a point of saying that his administration would be color blind. I've got no problem with him talking about being saved as a Christian (though I was taught that ALL men are my brothers); but he was speaking as Governor--less than an hour after being sworn in, mind you--not as a Baptist pastor, and that's what makes it a problem. We didn't elect him to run a revival, after all.

Hey Nan, you didn't write my name in for governor, did you? That what I did. ;)

No, I didn't think about writing in your name. :) Usually when I write in a name, it's a dog's name. I wrote in Bradley Byrne's name this time. That's who I voted for in the primary.

I expect he said what he meant and meant what he said. There may be a problem, but it's not his problem.

And any reference in the Bible to all men being brothers is probably early on in Genesis when all men were, ah, brothers. Literally.

Maybe you should read his inaugural speech, see what he said about being governor of all the people, a statement that was repeated by him at his inaugural ball, and then make your judgment on this matter. I realize that the media is know for full, complete, and actual treatment of all sides of an issue, but I thought you might want to double-check on this one.

You won't find a more sincere, straight-shooting fellow anywhere. And his faith is certainly a part of his daily life that will not go away or even shrink because he is governor.

I'm not
naive
enough to believe anybody would/could govern without bias and
preferential
treatment to
cronies
. If his 35 year old whiz-kid can fix the money problems,,,,, I don't really care what he believes. I respect the stand. At least we know how he feels.
