Why would I renounce my SS benefits just to make a political point? Its not a perfect system but since I (along with my employers) have contributed close to a half a million $ into the system over my working career you better believe I intend to take out the full amount allowed. I would have happily withdrawn from the system had I been given the choice when I started my first job slinging greasy Taco Bell garbage food.

We're still here ... waiting to get official guidance that the shut down - that occurred 16 1/2 hours ago - actually happened. The only word from on-high we've received is that until we receive word from on-higher, we are expected to report to work tomorrow ... even though we are closed.

I know conventional wisdom says that the Democrats retake the house in 2026, but with stuff like this and the inevitable doubling down on the wrong side of the 80/20 issues, I'm skeptical. If the Republicans can prove to the average voter that Dems are trying to secure health care for illegals with this move......I'm not saying the Democrat party will be done, but Jerry Nadler could take a massive dump on a running centrifuge and it wouldn't equal the crap-storm coming in November of next year.

If it makes ya feel any better, the Reps are due for their "hold my beer" moment just any ole time now. Sometimes I think there are Congressional Reps who are actually mad that they have the majority. I realize Congress isn't the private sector, but that doesn't mean the voters aren't expecting those pesky "results" that politicians seem to hate.

Let's end the myth of "won the shutdown" once and for all, shall we?

1) There were four one-day shutdowns in 1980, 1981, 1984, and 1986.

Carter did not lose in 1980 because of the one-day shutdown, there were no elections in 1981, Reagan won a thumping landslide one month to the day after the 1984 shutdown (and the Dems picked up two Senate seats), and the Democrats were going to win the midterms in 1986 anyway.

2) Columbus Day weekend 1990
Inconvenienced some folks visiting DC monuments but the 8 lost House seats and one Senate seat a month later were not bad losses for a party who's President had just raised taxes.

3) 1995-96 Gingrich vs Clinton Shutdowns

The government shut down twice, November 14 - 19, 1995 and December 16, 1995 - January 6, 1996. THIS is the one that the media's shameless bias tells us all, "The public was with Clinton and he won the shutdown showdown!!"

He did? On what basis?

On November 17, Clinton's approval rating was 53% for polls taken just prior to the shutdown on 11/14.

On January 5, 1996, his approval rating was down to 42%. So if everybody agreed with Clinton and hated Gingrich and the Republicans, how did Clinton's approval rating go DOWN if they were on his side??

Clinton's numbers did go back up right after the government opened, and Clinton did get re-elected. But the Republicans ADDED two Senate seats (Arkansas, Nebraska). Sure, the Republicans lost 4 House seats, but given the Democrats lost 9 on the day Clinton was elected in 1992, losing less than half then when you also lose the White House seems pretty damned successful to me.

And then remember this: on November 15, 1995 - BECAUSE OF THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN - the White House used unpaid interns to do things. On that day, one of the interns, 22-year-old Monica Lewinsky, began the (whatever) with President Clinton that consumed his second term. Monica delivered him a pizza, and the earth moved.

So somebody tell me again - how in the hell can anyone with a brain say "Clinton won the government shutdown" given all that happened and not just the sound bites???? You see, folks, this is why I don't believe political myths concocted by professional nonsense writers.

4) 2013 Shutdown - October 1 Through 17

OK, most folks don't recall this and who won?
The Republicans took control of the Senate the next election cycle and won 13 House seats.

But they probably would have done that anyway since "6th year" elections have proven the undoing of FDR, Eisenhower, 1966 Democrats, 1974 Republicans, Reagan, and Dubya. And the only reason Clinton didn't get his clock cleaned in 1998 (no matter what myth you've been told) is that the GOP pretty much bagged all of the seats they could take in 1994.

5) January 2018 - Immigration

It was a two-day shutdown. Yes, the Democrats won the House back, but the Republicans used the Kavanaugh hearings in October to keep the Senate. So again.....who paid? Nobody.

6) Dec 2018 - Jan 2019 Shutdown - The Shutdown so Mexico Could Pay for the Wall!!

Five week shutdown, longest ever.

Who won?
Nobody.

Nine government shutdowns.
Nothing changed anything at all.
Nobody lost an election because of it.
Or won one, either.

Government shutdown will hurt the economy.
Poor economy will be blamed on the party in power, i.e. on Trump.
Everything else, as you wrote, is not important

As Stephanopoulos says at the end, the CBO did not say that about illegal immigrants. That is a boogeyman thrown up by Trump and his supporters that the ignorant, fearful, and bigoted will continue to believe. However, it's hard to blame Republicans for continuing to lie when the Democrats are consistently ineffective and incompetent when it comes to rebutting the hate-filled message.

This is a violation of the Hatch Act, but the law and ethics mean nothing to Republicans and those who defend their actions, so no one should be surprised.

Reported to the office per usual and received updated guidance. Our office has been given a "notice of exception to the shutdown furlough." This means it's business as usual for me, and I will get paid for my current work at some point in the future. Bummer! Now, on the surface, it makes sense that the contracting office stay open. We are "mission critical," considering that the troops are still on the job and need to be supplied. But, what's amusing is that it's the start of a new fiscal year. October through December are always the slowest time of year because new requirements are being formulated and not ready to be put on contract. And new fiscal money is not normally available until the end of October anyway, so we can't even start the solicitation process until we receive funding. And currently there is no budget to generate any FY26 funds to eventually filter down to this office. There's no work to do at the moment. So, why are we here? 🤷‍♂️ This is the one millionth example of why government makes no sense.

And every other Thursday (today) is the deadline for submitting timesheets. If you let it slip, you won't get paid until the next pay cycle. Except that we've receive no guidance on how we code this week's days. These are not "regular" or "annual leave" or "sick leave" or "furloughed" days. We've been told to hold off submitting timesheets until a new code for whatever these days are going to be designated is determined. But, the deadline for submitting timesheets is still COB today. And it's not like a shutdown or the threat of a shutdown hasn't happened regularly leading up to this. How about use whatever policy that was previously used? Example #1,000,001.

Ehhhhhh, I wouldn't be so sure of that. Remember, they still have their ways of distracting the masses. There's still some juice to be squeezed out of the whole "threat to democracy" thing (which is just this generation's "four legs good; two legs bad.") If the Dems really believed there were enough voters out there whose attention span is longer than that of a goldfish's, it seems to me they would have acted on that belief by now and gotten their act together.
