With eyes wide open, the House and Senate failed to reach a deal to fund the government as a new fiscal year began at midnight Monday, shutting down federal functions deemed non-essential and setting up an uncertain collision course ahead.

Here's the kicker, or at least to me anyway, if they're deemed non-essential, why do we have them?

Not all of us are the unionized high school drop-outs that people like Glenn Beck would have you believe. A large population are Veterans who were employed due to the skills we acquired while serving in uniform. I only mention this to remind you that we are real people with real families.

We know you are real. We also appreciate your service. With that said, the Government should run profitably, and the bloat has caused it not to be.

You have to understand, our view of government workers is, the Post Office, the IRS, the DMV, the SS office, Social Services, Food Stamps offices, etc.

None have a history of good service, work ethic, or profitability, thus the tag of Government Worker comes with negative feelings, that they are overpaid and uncaring, with a bazillion vacation days, and they can never be fired....

It's a pretty good gig

I believe they passed a military pay measure, so at least active duty military should not be affected. My husband went in bright and early this morning.

The irony is -- is that he has to go to work.....while many departments that are deemed "unessential" -- will get to stay home -- and when this is over, they'll get all their back pay (including overtime -- I read somewhere) -- and won't have worked a minute for it.......

Amen Brother. On behalf of our dear leader I am sorry if this affects any of our posters but this is Barry's fault. My wife has already lost her job due to funding so I do understand. Our govt will not survive with a leader and parties so dismissive of the rule of law (that involves both
Sides).

The Democratic rhetoric is humorous. Reid accuses Republicans, particularly Tea Party members, of being bullies. Last I knew, bullies don't negotiate and offer alternatives. Seems that the Democrats and the President are being the bullies and are overriding the House's constitutional responsibility for setting the budgetary agenda.

So here we go. Can any of you explain to me why a government that can't pay it's bills would have non-essential services? If I can't meet my budget non-essential services would be out before this point. Oh, by the way, how do we get by without having a budget for years?

We at least have red state democrats on record voting against defunding, delaying the individual mandate (fairness), and requiring lawmakers to eat their own dog food. You'd certainly think those votes would make a difference in the next election.
