Guillon

This thread has drifted far from Guillon. Over the summer, the reports were that the OL spent what time they had to in the weight room, and that was all. Earlier, the word had been put out that CRC was given an iron hand to run the S&C program. One major problem is that the NCAA has decreed that summer S&C is "voluntary." At that point, it comes down to the will of the position coach and the HC to enforce their displeasure. Most, not all, but most, players who don't feel that disapproval are not going to hang around the weight room. During the course of the season, it will become obvious which units have been serious about their S&C off-season work. Now is way, way too late...

I guess it all boils down to pride. Their sorry performance in the IB last year should have lit a fire under anybody's butt to bust their humps to try to make up for that spectacle. You'd also think that Coach Shula and CBC would not have tolerated such an indifferent attitude. The sad thing is, deep down, as they mature, they'll probably regret taking the easiest way out.

Your going to forget Robert Marve even exists when GM suits up to play for real next year. I got a feeling that we are going to have a QB controversy unlike anything Bama has ever seen when he goes head to head against JPW. Just wait, this kid is that good.

You obviously don't know about Marve. While GM will be a great one, Marve is turning into the #1 QB prospect in the state of Florida and he is very smart on (and off) the field. There will be a QB competition over the next few yrs with the talent that CMS is putting together. :BigA:

As close as I can tell after reading this thread MG leaving the team will free up CRC enough to fix the OL conditioning and the play calling will now more closely resemble the five-wide-flex-veer we've been expecting. Bottom line,,,, MG lost the 2 spot to JB and probably opened that mouth one more time. MG never factored into much PT and they had to get Barns ready with beating JPW has taken.

From everything I've seen and heard, GM is a very good QB. Just don't discount the abilities of JPW. I think he's met all expectations thus far this season and then some. I think GM would have to be exceptionally great to take JPW's job away from him.

I don't see the reasoning for Guillon leaving the team now, especially since he is a senior. That means his collegiate football career is over. He should have stuck around. Who knows, JPW might have gone down and then he (MG) might have became our starting QB.

Oh well, we all should wish him the best of luck.

Not intended as a smart a** comment but whether Marve is all world and McElroy is all universe and JPW is the next coming of Joe Willie it means nothing if you don't have an offensive line to block. It seems to me that the coaching staff should focus all of its energy on recruiting linemen DL and OL. The line of scrimmage is obviously our weakest link. As far as Guillon, I never had any confidence in him and wished he had left sooner so Barnes and Johns could have gotten the reps. The strength and conditioning program participation or lack thereof is the sole responsibility of the HC. IMO, being a member of this team is not like being in a democracy, to be successful it appears that it will have to be run like a dictatorship.

Johns' QB packages are extremely limited...
So are Tebow's...
I definitely think Johns will need more QB reps in practice, just in case.

I would say both Barnes and Johns should get more reps at qb in practice. In a game, put Johns in for an entire series, not just one play. Also give Barnes some serious playing time if not the start against FIU to get him acclimated. Better safe than sorry. All it takes is one play then Barnes is the starter. Avoid trying to burn McElroy's redshirt at all costs.

As for Guillon, I wish him well in his future endeavors. Posters on here that are bashing him are ridiculous and classless.

No excuse for leaving now, but I expect that a back-up QB can live with that role as long as he expects to get some PT, even if it is in less than competitive games. I spent years as a backup and was able to stay somewhat motivated because I expected and got quite a bit of PT when we blew out opponents.

I imagine Guillon looked at our schedule this year and expected significant PT against Hawaii, Vandy, ULM, Duke, Ole Miss, FIU, and MSU. All of us were hoping for the same. Now, Bama couldn't get far enough ahead in any of the first six games other than ULM to give Guillon a chance at seeing the field. Looking at the play of the team right now, I doubt any backups get quality PT against the rest of our schedule. All games will require the best we got--with the possible exception of FIU (but I thought the same about Duke).

I hate that he walked away from the team, especially considering our depth at QB and the fact that JPW is already a target. But I am sure that some people need a little more motivation than simply getting to stand on the sideline all year. For the crowd that says a win is a win even if it is by 1 point. This instance shows why that may not be the case. Big margins by teams that take care of business have happier backups I suppose. I doubt we see Guillon walking away if he would have played the entire second half against Duke like he should have.

If people on our football staff think any particular group of players are slacking in their training (like the OL doing the minimum in the weightroom) I would rather they keep their criticism private, and address the issue with the head coach.

Don't get me wrong, I really like JPW although honestly, I know squat about Marve. I liked JPW when he was at Hoover and knew that he would be a great QB when he came to Alabama. I actually think he has the potential to break alot of Croyle's records if he progresses the way he has been. However, I am truly impressed with GM. I started following him kinda indirectly because my uncle lives in Dallas and knows his parents. He was a Texas Tech lean until Shula decided to go after him after Tebow went UF. GM camped at Bama and really impressed all the coaches with his arm and his knowledge of the position. It didn't hurt that he passed for something like 4,500 yards in his Senior season playing for one of the best high school teams in the country last year. He is going to compete for playing time next year because that's the way he is and it's going to get interesting to see what shakes out.

I heard from a source close to MG that he was not happy with the lack of playing time along with the fact the he felt he was not getting the respect from his coaches and fellow players that he wanted. I guess he forgot that respect isn't given...it's earned. I do think we will miss him calling plays in...but if I remember correctly we have both he and Barnes calling in plays every down. One of them has the real one and one has a fake one. Will this mean we have only one QB calling plays in now or does McElroy step up and assist in that?

Agreed about Jimmy Johns at QB...all we've seen is a net gain for -5 yards when he lines up under center.

I know GMis awesome...and I was pumped when I heard he was interested in us...but JPW is shaping up to be one of the best pure QBs we've ever seen at Bama. He is the reason we have won the games we've won if you haven't noticed. He will get better with more experience. I see GM getting some looks in 2007 and again in 2008...but I don't think he will be good enough to replace JPW until he graduates. The only exception being if JPW gets hurt...God forbid.

I guess I just don't understand MG's logic about playing time:

- He's given a scholly and a second chance to play at Bama after things did not go well for him at Miami.

- He was given a chance as a sophomore to start 2 games when Brodie went down 2 years ago. He didn't do anything of significance to warrant being the starter for the rest of that season.

- He complained of the nagging "back injury" last year and so JPW fills in as #2 QB and gets in just a little bit of mop up duty. JPW throws a TD or two, runs one in and shows nice poise and potential for the next season.

- JPW beats out MG in the spring and is having a season that has surprised most of us Bama fans. We thought our running game would be our strength, but so far it has been our passing game and the solid performance of JPW.

- The LM game is the only game in which our team has been up enough to get the backups in for playing time. MG did get snaps in that game.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Seems like it is all about MG and not about the team. The backup QB is only one play away from being the starter. He knows this from experience; especially two years ago after Brodie went down. If he really wants some playing time, then maybe he should beef up and talk to Connelly about the O line.

Here's a link to Cecil Hurt's take on the Guillon departure.

Wilson’s backup now is redshirt freshman Jimmy Barnes, whose only game experience is taking a knee in the waning moments of Alabama’s win over Louisiana-Monroe. In scrimmages, Barnes has shown a good grasp of the Alabama offense but he is not in Wilson’s category as a runner or a passer, and the Tide offense would be more limited with Barnes in the game.

Freshman Greg McElroy, who was ticketed for a redshirt this season, would move into the No. 3 position. He might still be redshirted – it’s unlikely, for instance, that he’d be put in merely for a knee-taking performance – but has to at least be considered as an emergency option. There might be some other avenues that Shula and his staff would explore as well, but he did not discuss those on Tuesday.

I wish MG good luck in whatever he chooses to do, but I still cannot believe he would walk out on his teammates like that. If that's what we had at backup, then we don't need it. The players have faith in JB, so I'll have faith in JB's ability to step up.

Agreed.

What kind of person walks out on their team like that?

Don't answer that...

Also some good info in this article from Tidesports for those who haven't seen it:

Quarterbacks scrambled as Guillon departs

“When [Barnes] gets into a ballgame you’re all going to see that he’s a pretty good quarterback," senior running back Kenneth Darby said.

“Nobody’s had a chance to see him and what he can do, but he’s a good quarterback."

One move that Alabama apparently will not consider is to move either sophomore running back Jimmy Johns or true freshman wide receiver Earl Alexander back to quarterback, where they played in high school.

I have zero respect for quiters. I know that he probably carried a chip on his shoulder because he was the #2 and not seeing alot of action, but that's football and not a reason to quit in the middle of the season. If your unhappy, at least have the dignity to quit during the Spring or Summer. If he's not getting respect, do like BIGyowski says and earn it. He was #2 on the damn depth chart and was only an injury away from becoming the #1. It's not like that hasn't happened anytime in the past at Bama. He has left this team in a bind and I hope he realizes that.

BTW, I hope he drops out, too. He doesn't deserve to be associated with this school anymore.
