I am starting to try and learn to play guitar and need some advice for easy excercises to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone that plays lives in the Muscle Shoals area and would be interested in giving some lessons please let me know. Thank ya

First off, there is only room for one Big Al on this board;)

As far as guitar goes, I started learning a couple of years ago, still not very good, but to get used to moving my fingers up and down, my girlfriend taught me the intro to "Dust in the Wind" and the finger placements are stay prenty much the same, just on different strings...plus it is pretty repetitive...it helps you to get used to moving without looking at your fingers- well it helped me, sorta...:biggrin2:

I would suggest starting your lessons before you try to do much on your own. You can pick up a LOT of bad habits that you'll have a tough time "un-learning". I'm living proof of this.

1 - Chords - Major , Minor , Barre and 7ths . Buy a chart .
2 - Scales - Without them you'll eventually arrive at a dead end .
3- "Hey Joe" - Great for incorporating multiple techniques with your own twists . Perfect song for the "expanding beginner" .

Don't ever allow anyone to intimidate you and always ask for help . Perfection is not attainable so don't ever allow it get you too frustrated . Music is the gift that never stops giving .

P.S. - If you have a tremolo system , remove your whammy bar until you need it - at least a year . It offers no help for the learning guitarist . Staying in tune is far more important than making "cool" noises .

Aww...cool noises are awesome! :cool2: For real though...always tune your guitar...every time you pick it up.

Excellent !!! Try "Hey Joe" ...

Mainly - E string with C,G,D,A . Just try it with Power Chords .

The little scale part is ...
E string - 1,2,3,4 - *or* - 0,1,2,3 (whichever is more comfortable)
A string - 2,3,4,5
E string - 2,3,4,5
A string - 4,5,6,7

Any problems , don't hesitate to ask .
Good luck .

Thanks everyone for all the help. I am calling tomorrow to see if a guy here has a opening for lessons. You may have heard of him. It is Jim Seales from the band Shenendoah. Hopefully he has an opening.

Play with anyone who will sit down with you. Even if you suck and they are a pro try to pick up a lick or two from them but keep it simple for a while. Learn the basics before you try Van Halen.

My livelihood has been teaching guitar since i was 15. Best thing i can tell ya is learn songs you're passionate about and stick with em till you can play em backwards in your sleep. Mix in the scales as finger exercises and warm ups every time you pick up the guitar. The theory stuff won't mean anything to ya for a while. The only way you'll really fall in love with the instrument is if you start off having fun with what your doing and playing styles and songs you enjoy.

LCN.... Hey joe is a good one, but I've always been a Wind Cries Mary kind of guy myself :) .

Soon you'll fall in love with the botomless money pit that is playing guitar. When I worked at a music store back home, I used to sign my checks and hand em back to my boss!! haha.

Do you know the "Nashville System" ?

Hoping .............

I don't know . An old-timer me told it probably wasn't in any books . I'd sure like to know it . I won't see this guy again until I make my annual Christmas trip to Houma,La .
