1. crosspicked version of shady grove, embryonic journey (although i don't fingerpick any more)

2. tied, beaumont rag (hard to integrate the crosspicking section smoothly); plastic banana; blackberry blossom (both of these songs have very fast repetitive, but complex patterns on the lower strings and it is tough to get the timing and tone down) but i haven't given up yet

1. None
2. Every one of them

I tried to learn the guitar with minimal success. It was like a monkey trying to type. One day I decided to follow WC Fields' advice:

If at first you don't succeed, try again, if you fail again, give up. There's no sense being a d**n fool about it.

#1 - no answer...I don't know any hard ones...*sighs*

#2 - Scuttlebuttin' by Stevie Ray Vaughan - never tried; I watched an excellent picker get frustrated with playing a passable version of it...and punted before I ever even got the ball...

But man...to be able to play Scuttlebuttin' would be awesome...*sighs again*

1. Guyute by Phish. It's a long song with tons of changes, but it rocks.

2. Unbroken Chain by the Grateful Dead. It's not too hard...I just can't get it to sound right. I don't even try to play it anymore.

Shady Grove is a great song. I can't play it either.

unbroken chain was definitely not designed for a single instrument. i have heard studio outtakes of it that are pretty pared down, but its still a weird song.

some of that era phish stuff is similar, imo, they tried to emulate zappa a lot. some of it ended up good (most of the stuff off of junta and lawn boy was good) but some ended up just being odd. they could tear it up live though.

1 (tie): Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix (long time ago, trying to re-learn), and Big Log by Robert Plant (1st song ever learned).

2. Too many to count, but I'll go with Spirit of Radio. It's my most recent failure.

Yeah "Unbroken" is weird...but it rocks. Phish did try to emulate Zappa. I've read several things where they said he was their main influnce. Junta is their best album, imo. Live...they do indeed rip it up.

I've never tried to learn any zappa songs...they are to insane. But I dig his music.

You've just inspired me ! Thanks .

About to search for "Big Log" right now .

Ever mess with "Burning Down One Side" ?

Check this out - http://www.noolmusic.com/blogs/YouT..._-_Robert_Plant_-_Burning_Down_One_Side.shtml - This one doesn't work but , there are several if you look lower-right .

i would guess they would be pretty tough to emulate (most of them at least) since they were written more as multi-instrument compositions. he also messed around with some funky time signatures.

i think some of the songs like trouble everyday and camarillo brillo would translate relatively well into straight forward rock and could probably even be adapted to an acoustic setting.
