Chattanooga Times Free Press | Wiedmer: Hamilton must address Vols' image problems

The University of Tennessee athletic department is developing an image problem. Possibly a big one.

With Friday's announcement that basketball players Tyler Smith, Cameron Tatum, Brian Williams and Melvin Goins were arrested on gun and drug charges following a routine traffic stop near campus, UT is in danger of becoming the new millennium version of 1980s Miami football or 1990s UNLV basketball.

Without the national championship bling, of course.

Not seven weeks after three Big Orange football players were briefly charged with attempted armed robbery -- charges that later forced football coach Lane Kiffin to dismiss freshmen Nu'Keese Richardson and Mike Edwards -- another embarrassing and troubling incident has slam-dunked Bruce Pearl's hoops program.

What's next? The Valentine's Day release of "Vols Gone Wild"? Orange inmate jumpsuits for men's basketball warm-ups? Turning all those headbands into house arrest monitoring devices?

That will be difficult on the football side of things, when the HC acts like an arrogant & immature brat. Teams tend to take on a similar persona as the HC so Hamilton will have his work cut out for him there. Since he made the hire, I guess he approves of that type of behavior. I don't follow their bb team so don't know what the coach is like there.

Fullmer being fired did much to make me ease up on UT, Lane Kiffen is so entertaining and brings them so much bad rep but if the NCAA would visit and rip them a new one that would be the cherry on top of the sunday.

Karma, my friend, karma....

Karma, my friend, karma....

Yeah, and karma is a ............... Well I can't say what karma is on Tide Fans, but you get my point.

I've got a feeling Wonderboy's story in Tennessee is going to end ugly. That is a train wreck waiting to happen in Knoxville yet I cannot make myself look away. :PDT_tit:

How many think that the NCAA is now looking because UTK's deal has expired and the protection is no longer in force? The NCAA can point to an investigation at UTK and Fulmer can deny any connection since he is not involved anymore. I still believe that UTK has been institutional supportting the funny business in the athletic department similiar to AU.

That's what happens when you recruit thugs. I don't see Hamilton doing anything as long as they win, baby, win. The only thing that will straighten this out will be the NCAA. When it happens, Hamilton will be booted out with the rest.
I thought, for some reason, there were rules against athletes using illegal drugs. They must have some special arrangement for drug testing.

Never heard of Bruce Pearl? Watch the video maybe this will answer some of your questions about the basketball program. Maybe you will like it but it just doesn't do anything for me.:p

Hahaha. I like Pearl a lot better than Kiffin.

Saying the Vols have a major image problem is an understatement. Maybe Kiffin & Pearl should take a page from Pat Summitt. Her basketball program is the only thing I respect out of Knoxville.

Great that they actually added this part:

"Without the national championship bling, of course."

I live in Chattanooga but work in Knox, I've enjoyed listening to the Sports Animal in Knox because of all the misery they are going thru this year. Makes me smile everyday and the only thing I look forward to on my 2 hour drive home.
