Has anyone dropped cable/dish?

For Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, etc? How have you liked it and can you get around the live sports barrier?

I'm considering it.

Thanks! RTR

yes, we did it last year. we have been very happy with the choice and are using apple tv and subscribing to netflix and huluplus. i watched a lot less football this past season, but still caught most of the bama games in one form or another on-line. in atlanta, i used aereo month to month through the season and got all of the cbs games that way. we are saving a good $100+ per month now. you can also use an antenna to get several broadcast channels, at least in atlanta, but i didnt go this route because we have a steep roof and i didn't feel like messing around with putting up an antenna.

i also just found out that (my city) east point is one of the cities set to get google fiber, so this should make the streaming stuff even better

We are thinking about dropping cable as well and just keeping internet and phone through Comcast/Xfinity. Y'all are pushing me closer to the edge....LOL!

I have Apple TV with a Netflix subscription and have not missed cable at all.
I get my news from Sky (which actually talks about the royals less than NBC news seems to do.), have local weather (and the dadgum weatherman does not stand right in front of the dadgum weather map while talking about the dadgum weather, because there is no weatherman). Apple also has some interesting channels such as Smithsonian, History, ACC Sports (yawn), PBS, even Youtube (which has most Bama games by Wednesday after the game, but that may change once the SECN is up and running). No complaints whatsoever.

Can you get an espn live app for live sports??

There is an app, but it requires a subscription I believe (I know we have used it with directv in the past).

As to the OP, it depends on what you watch. I love Game of Thrones, but I don't have any of the movie channels because I don't mind waiting (I know I'm buying the blu-ray/digital combo pack when it hits stores). Outside of that, my other favorite shows come on a day or two after they premiere if you bought the Season Pass on itunes (I only do that with 2 shows).

I haven't looked into watching live sports through just the internet, but I imagine you can without a cable subscription. If you can, I'll probably just do that when I move since I just got Apple tv.

Apple TV has a MLB and NBA channel, but it depends on your internet service provider.
Since I believe the most exciting thing happening on a baseball field is the grass growing, and I never watch the NBA, this is not a problem for me.

Hulu & Netflix combined are about $20 per month, and you still save $100+ per month? What the heck kind of package did you have?

You've obviously never had U-verse

Nope. I've got Dish.

I got a free iPad, a $250 visa gift card, 2 Terrabytes of whole home DVR, a seperate DVR for recording 8 days worth of prime time network shows, for $73 a month. And that's not an intro price, that's the 2 year price. I had the option of $37 per month for the first year or an iPad, I chose the iPad.

How much are you paying for internet and what speed are you getting?

the way our yard/house is situated, the dish/direct tv set ups are not an option (both are cheaper than cable in our area). we had one choice, comcast and did a bundle with them (internet, cable, phone). since we have dropped, u-verse has come to town, but they are no cheaper.

I would if i could stream ESPN. I don't get it. It costs the cable companies something like $5.30 per subscriber. I'd pay ABC/ESPN $15 if they'd let me stream it.

My parents have that exact problem. Comcast was the only option & yeah, they probably pay twice what I do.

We just dropped DirecTV a few months ago. We were 1.5 years into our 2 year contract and our bill was already up to $104/month. In October it was going go up to around $130/month and this was there third from the top package, Choice + I believe. The package itself is was only 73.99, plus 7.99 for the protection plan, which was my choice to add. Then you have all the fees that DirecTV adds; $25 advance receiver fee for the whole home DVR, $18 fee for the 3 additional TVs and finally a $6 primary TV fee plus tax. We were still receiving $28 in new customer discounts which would all expire in October.

Anyway, we just had to save some money so we canceled and paid the $140 early termination fee. We now use our Apple TV and an OTA antenna (which takes care of local networks and provides some live sports) on our main TV, a Roku on our kid's TV and we eventually will buy an Apple TV or Ruko for the kitchen. We got rid of our bedroom TV which was barely used anyway. We were already Netflix and Amazon Prime subscribers, have been for years, but added Hulu+ when we canceled DirecTV. We've been doing fine but I really miss being able to watch the Braves every night, there is no way to get SportsSouth or Fox Sports without cable/sat. I can listen to the radio broadcast through my phone but it is not the same.

There are a lot of apps on the Apple TV and Roku that require a cable/sat subscription to gain full access. These include WatchESPN, all the WatchDisney apps, the ABC app, the History Channel app, the A&E app, HBO GO and there are others as well. Lucky for us, my parents, sister and good friend have let us use there cable/sat logins to authenticate all the apps so, that has helped ease the pain of the cord cutting. So, I can still watch ESPN, ESPN 2 and ESPN U though the app, not sure if they'll offer the SEC Network when it launch, I doubt it. My friend subscribes to HBO so we used his login so we could access the HBO GO app for Games of Thrones, True Blood and Newsroom. Kids are happy because we can access the Disney Jr. app using logins from my family. So, we cheat a little, if I didn't have access to the ESPN, the switch would definitely be harder for me.

my wife and kids are doing just fine with the switch, I'm the one who is having Braves withdrawal which is the only thing I'm not really liking about it so far. Of course, saving $100/month helps ease my pain.

We dropped Comcast in favor of Netflix and Amazon. We use the SmarTV (family room), Roku (kids play room) and PS3 (man cave) to use these two services.

For football games, we have the HD antenna, which gets all your CBS games. For ESPN games, I watched a few via my laptop (hooked into the TV) and ESPN 360. I was able to access the ESPN games I think because I have an Xfinity internet connection. Worst case scenario, I went to a friend or family member's house to watch games.

We've been pretty happy with dropping cable. Unless you are dying to have the most current episodes of TV shows, Netflix and Amazon have plenty of content to enjoy. Hulu may have more current stuff.
