There is a Waffle House just up the road from the State Park, not far from the fishing pier. I know it's not the type of suggestion you had in mind, but two things come to mind about this little eatery - good food and a friendly staff. To me that makes it worth the stop.
And yes, a meal at Lambert's (in Foley) is an absolute must. :)

I was down there last month and had good and bad experiences. If you like ribs...Jake's grill had some of the
best that I have ever had. Bubba's seafood...right beside
Jake's grill had excellent seafood and steaks. The bayside grill, tacky jacks, and Calypso Joes all were pretty good.
Bad experience at Cottons...the food was expensive and
not so good IMO. Lulus was ok....nothing special.

Love LuLu's!
Disagree with whomever said LuLu's is nothing special. We found it to have a great atmosphere and tasty, satisfying food. Try the Fried Green Tomatoes, Crab Melt and Bread Pudding. Yummy! Live music most evenings too.

Try San Roc Cay

Both Grazie (better Italian than Franco's IMHO) and Louisiana Lagniappe are pretty good, but be prepared to wait.

There is also a restaurant over on the Florida side called the Original Point that doesn't look like much, but I had one of the best meals in my life in there. I got directions from the phone book.

The Original Oyster House is always pretty good as well. Also, Zeke's is good if a bit more expensive than most.

I am glad it's close to lunchtime, because I just made myself hungry.

Most places down here are more tourist type places with average food. Its more about the atmosphere. Mobile/Fairhope specialize in quality food.

As for the atmosphere, I'd check out Pirates Cove and Tacky Jacks. For food, Lillian's Pizza is the best.

The trick is to go places where the locals go.
I have been going there for 25 years here are a few recommendations
The Orr House in Foley
McGuires in Pensacola- get the prime rib medium rare, worth the 30 min drive atomsphere is awesome phone#850-433-6789 keep them on speed dial on my cell phone
Papa-Roccos- Italian- very good
Red's at Sand Roc Cay- just before the Bridge
The Crab Schack it is just past the Flora Bama on the FL side, might have to wait put they have all kinds of stuff to keep the kidos occupied

No matter the town, the best way to find the best food at the best places is to drive by them either during lunch hour or just before the dinner rush. If their parking lots are mostly full, that's the place to stop. If the fast food joints have more cars than the restaurant, pass it by. Oh... and watch to see where the local police gather to eat. They ALWAYS know where the best places are.... :)

The Original Oyster House and if you like try the "Mahi on the Bayou" with cheese grits and small bowl of gumbo with Conecuh sausage. Then complete your meal with a Key Lime Pie or a Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter pie that is 3 inches tall.

I also have to agree on the McGuire's in P'Cola. Excellent steaks.

Just spent a week in Orange beach with my yougest son, he is nine.....wife could not make it, but we needed a fix and took off.

Weather did not work out for taking my boat offshore, so we spent a lot of eating out and in amusement parks.

Best today:

Original Oyster house for lunch and dinner...raw oysters very fresh....me and the rug rat started every meal out with a dozen split.....very good servings with all my selections.........red beans and rice a little dry for my taste but the taste was fine.

King Nepturn since changing hands has taken a rather big drop off.

For breakfast for the food and the ambience.......still Tacky Jacks.....do the small Farmer's Omelet........unless you have one large appetite....them go for the large one.

Cottons was blah.......Jakes still just another average steak house with no prime steaks available.

Is Ribs & Reds still open down there? Ribs & Reds and Zekes Landing are my favorite places down in Orange Beach.

I'm sorry if I offend someone, but Bubba's Seafood House didn't make the cut.We spent about 30 secs. in there.A 76 from the health dept. did the trick. We ate at Jake's a few days later and could see why they got such a pitiful rating. The view from Jake's was of boxes and other junk scattered around the side and back of Bubba's.So needless to say we checked that one off the list.:(
