Hope Scholarship

As I said above, he's a counter the instant he sets foot on the field for the first play. Basically, all the dodges that Coach Bryant pioneered have been closed...

Stephen and HSV,
Y'all know more about counting than I. I do know he Presidential scholarship can only be earned through academic accomplishments and ACT scores. They aren't handed out based on available funding. Ironically, I will be at a meeting over the next several days where I can get a clear understanding of what the requirements are for a Presidential scholarship. When I get back I will call the athletic department to clarify what I was told. If my understanding is wrong, I will post my correction. Thanks for your patience.

Capstone, I wish you were right and there were a way around the scholarship limitations - there's not. Any deal that looks too good to be true...think about it...

A most interesting post. I was one of a group who gathered petitions to get the lottery on the ballot in Florida. We made a big mistake in not including a proviso that there be an annual or better yet a semi-annual accounting of the income to the state. The education funding from the state to the different schools was reduced dollar for dollar for every one received via the lottery. We are still receiving about the same amount from Tallahassee that we always did. Where did the original funding go ? To the insurance companies who really run this state. Our insurance industry in Florida is one of the largest we have behind food and travel and absolutely controls the legislature.

If you have this on the ballot again and it looks like it might go through, get involved and insist there be a public accounting. We've had ours for years now and no one knows how much money it has taken in.

Be sure it's coming and be sure you get this all important factor included in the bill before election day. Untold millions have been taken in and no one know where it goes other than prizes. All the "hope" scholorships and other benefits are just window dressing and a distraction.

Where's the money ? The citizens of Florida don't know.

Again, the answer hinges on whether or not the player is considered to be recruited. A non-recruited player can take a Presidential Scholarship and not count initially. A recruited player counts if he receives any type of institutional aid. The NCAA only defines institutional and non-institutional aid. The criteria that the university uses for giving out the aid means absolutely nothing. Universally available need-based aid is the non-institutional type that does not count. My guess is that the recruiting coordinator was considering your family member to be a non-recruited athlete.

Yes, and if he plays in the first 2 years, he has to be counted against the initial limit, hence David Cavan's inability to play in 2001.

i'm not a parent yet, Capstone.... at least not that i know of

i look forward to it, though.

Cavan's a good example, Stephen. Fran wanted to play games with the "recruited walkon" rule, but he was stopped by Robbins - one more thing he was unhappy with...
