Just because trainer Todd Pletcher wasn't in the Preakness Stakes after running a record-tying five horses in the Kentucky Derby doesn't mean he ran out of 3-year-olds. It seems he was saving up for Saturday's 145th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park.

The 145th Belmont Stakes was supposed to be about redemption. Specifically, Kentucky Derby winner Orb making amends for a fourth-place finish in the Preakness Stakes. Well, it was redemption all right. But it was for Dogwood Stable's Palace Malice, ridden by Mike Smith, who Saturday stalked a stern pace to beat gritty Preakness winner Oxbow by 3-1/4 lengths at Belmont Park.

Breeders' Cup picks California for 2014; loses Kentucky tax break

The Breeders' Cup announced Monday that its two-day year-end thoroughbred championship races will be run at Santa Anita Park in Southern California in 2014 for what will be the third consecutive year.

[h=3]Once again, Belmont rewards the rested horse[/h]Since Commendable in 2000 became the first horse to win the Belmont without having a race in between after starting in the Kentucky Derby, six more horses have triumphed in the 11/2-mile test after skipping the Preakness, including Palace Malice.
