Just got back from a trip to my favorite big city, Chicago.
On the way from Wrigley to the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder restaurant (headed South on Clark, for those familiar with the area), I saw something strange out of the cab window -- what appeared to be a sign for a bar called the Houndstooth. Then, as we got closer, there was an Alabama flag flying -- red field with a white script A. My wife and I decided that would be our destination after dinner.
On the way back after a great dinner, we found that our eyes had not deceived us. I kid you not...around 3400 or so Clark, on the west side of the street, near Wrigley Field in Chicago, there's a bar called The Houndstooth Saloon. And it's got a bunch of Alabama memorabilia in it, plays good southern music and was packed. If you're in the area, it's a great place to stop in. Saw some Alabama alums, yelled Roll Tide a few times, and even ran into Rand Lambert's daughter. (For those not in the OFC, Rand Lambert was a fine center on Coach's championship teams of the mid-1970s.)
We were told that the owner isn't from Alabama, but likes the Tide, and was trying to fill a niche -- there are tons of places to watch Big 10 and Notre Dame games, but nothing much for the SEC. So he's it. Hope he's successful. It was the surprise highlight of our trip.
