How Does UAB Keep Their FBS Status?

I guess I am in the minority of Bama fans who does not constantly bash UAB. It is hard for their football program to generate a profit when they are handcuffed by the U of A Board. For example, if Jimbo Fisher had been hired, which was reported he wanted the job, I think this would be a different program. However, the board pushed Neil Callaway off on UAB. Callaway couldn't even get out of his own way while coaching the Bama O Line. Why would anyone expect him to be successful at UAB?

And what about Bama helping out a local team and putting UAB on the schedule. I am sure UAB could use the money. There is no reason Bama should pay that money to Georgia Southern or N Texas when they could help out UAB. To me its just pig headed and stubborn. Why? because of a sqabble in basketball 20 + years ago. I just don't get the Bama hate torward UAB.

Give one good reason to "help out" UAB. Essentially, you are paying yourself to compete against yourself. It makes no sense at all.

FBS division football at UAB is a complete waste of time, money, and manpower. UAB needs to return to a lower level division where they can develop regional rivals like Samford, University of South Alabama, UNA, UT-Chattanooga, ect. If southside Bham gets the new Barons stadium, have it configured where it can convert to 20,000 seats for UAB football.

Agreed. Let's say the UAB program really takes off. Don't you think it might hurt us in recruiting? Sorry, but we did too much to help out API, and see how that worked out.

It is. They get between 14 - 20 thousand a game. It will change though. I imagine in a few years the attendance will be down in the low thousands. Football, hell all athletics in my opinion, do not belong at commuter schools. No one goes to South or UAB for the atmosphere or experience.

While there may be exceptions (Memphis basketball), I tend to agree. Probably the only students that truly care are those that live in the on-campus housing and this is a small minority. The majority of students are only on the UAB campus to go to class; their lives are elsewhere.

UTC athletic programs in Chattanooga are experiencing the same problems. It is bad when local high school teams can almost fill your stadium on a Friday night but you can't. Most local residents are either die hard UT, UGA, or Bama fans eventhough a lot of them graduated from UTC.

UAB football is a joke. If they would just drop football and concentrate on basketball, they could be a power again like they were in the 80's.

The truth is that in the Birmingham area, highschool football (almost any high school team) provides a much more exciting brand of football to watch than UAB football. UAB also has to contend with the fact that the average football fan in metro Birmingham already has strong alligience to either Bama or *U.

Hmmm maybe we do. I go to UAB, and I thought I heard that tickets were $5 at the door. I know they used to be free, and attendance was terrible, so I was wondering why they would charge and make attendance even worse.

What many people may not realize is that even during UAB's heyday as a basketball power in the 80s, admission was free to UAB students. The student section was rarely ever filled, the exception being marquee games such as DePaul. The apathy of the student population was embarrassing given the quality of the product on the court. Hopefully, this has improved since they moved from BJCC to a smaller campus arena which is what they should do for football.

This might help. I think the real problem is the City of Birmingham. Will they ever let UAB play somewhere other than their precious city dump (I mean Legion Field)

The "Jimbo Fisher wanted to come to UAB" thing is a myth. UAB wanted Fisher, but they could not afford him. Fisher was in the middle of negotiating with FSU to come in as DC and be head-coach-in-waiting. Fisher never was coming to UAB. Do you honestly think Fisher wanted the UAB HC job over being the next HC at FSU?

At least Tulane has a long history, and used to play in the SEC.

You're right, but now the program is waaaaaayyyy down. Sounds odd, but if Tulane wants to increase their FB production (which I don't think they care) they need to lower admission standards for athletes. I wonder if anyone from Louisiana actually attends Tulane?

They play in the "Mercedes Benz" Super Dome and you can hear crickets in that place on a Saturday. So, how many of you Alabama fans pull for our professional football team?

I remember the 1992 game vs. Tulane - I think that was the last time Alabama played a road game against them. The Super Dome was mostly filled with Alabama fans. It was a virtual home game.

I don't necessarily pull for any pro team, but I do like the Saints. Especially since they picked up Mark Ingram.

I got to watch Bama play in the Superdome twice that year. That was a lot of fun. That was probably the last time Bama played a non BCS team at their home stadium. I am a Saints fan since they are the only pro team on the Gulf Coast (no, Tampa does not count as the Gulf Coast in my eyes)
