How would you fix the ineffective passing game?

There was much knashing of teeth following the USCe game concerning Gmac's passing stats. McElroy himself was quoted saying he had a bad game. For my part, I thought he was just pressured so much that he never got into a rhythm. Others may see it differently, though.

Bottom line, though: we didn't get it done with the passing game.

We have prospered all season long with a very balanced attack, with the running game opening up passing routes, and vice versa. If we lose that, the MNC recedes from view, in my opinion.

So what would you recommend to fix ur problem? Or do you think we really have a problem? After all, the defense outscored Carolina!

I definitely agree that our OL needs to give GM a couple more seconds in most cases, but I'd also like to see us running some short, easy routes (like earlier in the season) to get GM's confidence going and everything clicking.

Fast forward to this time next year...not sure there's a quick cure...will take experience to temper GM and improve his decision-making under pressure.

It seems that if we were to run wide more, it would produce more opportunities. All three backs have the speed to get there but we are stuck in a power, straight ahead type of plan. I know we are getting a lot of yardage from the run game but every team knows which way the back is going and if not for MI's ability to break tackles, who knows just where we'd be. Shorter routes like mentioned above and more versatility in the approach to the running attack would yield better success through the air.

Gmac will be fine. We don't need major adjustments. He's simply faced a couple of pretty darn good defenses who recognized his ability and were determined to shut him down. They saw him as more of a threat than our running game. And they paid the price.

Think about it.

We've played seven games. Gmac has had two bad passing games. The last two.

In those games, where defenses were determined to stop our passing attack, Mark Ingram has rushed for over 390 yards. 195 a game.

So what does UT focus on this week? Stopping Gmac, or Ingram?

I promise, if they decide to end Ingrams Heisman Trophy quest Gmac will pass for 250 yards.

That's why we're so good. Shut down one, suffer because of the others.

We've got so many weapons on offense it's ridiculous.

Work with the O-line. I think most of the problems can be solved with that. Greg is a true team player and will always say he needs to improve rather than blame his teammates.

SC rushed 4 and put tremendous pressure on Gmac, while 7 dropped back to defend the pass. Unless you unload a quick dump pass to a back, it is hard to find an open receiver. It is kinda unusual for a 4 man rush to get at a qb as often as SC did. I am no coach, but this is what I observed.

He lost a little confidence with all those long passes that went incomplete against kentucky. Throw some short passes to the wideouts and his confidence will be back. Let Julio and Maze catch a 5 yard out and see what they can do with it.

I was sort of thinking about this today. It seems he has been forcing the ball to Julio too much. It almost seems like the last couple of games he has put too much pressure on himself. I think if he gets back to just hitting the open receiver or throwing the ball away he will settle back in and be just fine.

Don't mean to be too much of a homer, but I thought my guys did a pretty ok job on pass coverage this past weekend.Run game is a different matter, but that is EJ'S call. When you run a 4-2-5 defense it clogs a lot of passing lanes, so if its not a swing pass or bubble, the checkoff is neverending for any QB.I doubt BAMA sees that D the rest of the year.EJ knew when he got to Carolina that we didn't have the depth that was needed right away to stand toe to toe with Fla, Ala, or LsWho.Barring injury and suspension, we might have been able to make it closer, but until then, who knows. We just don't have the depth needed to stay 4 quarters. You guys have a great team and I wish you nothing but success the rest of the year!

I thought EJ did an excellent job. I knew that USC's defense would be tough. Teams have caught up with our first year starter's tendencies and are sitting on those routes. Also, Pendry seems to turn out better run-blocking than pass-blocking OLs for us. Not taking anything away from your guys. Norwood was a monster, but I expected that. I hadn't done my homework on Geathers. It appears our staff hadn't either or he would have been doubled more...

Throw a few more quick passes, JJ on a 4 yard hitch, slants to Maze and Hanks, screens to Ingram and Richardson. Then try moving the pocket a little on the plays that take longer to develop. If you have someone who is crashing the end or consistently getting around your blockers, move the pocket and make him go farther to get to the QB. I'm not talking about full rollout passes. Just slide the pocket over behind the tackle instead of straight back.

Then feed it to Ingram. That always helps the passing game. ;)

Aside from the running game, quick hit slant passes out of the pistol, slip screens to MI or RU, and 3 step drop timing passes early in the game. If GMac hits a few of those, it will open up the long ball because they'll have to slow down their pass rush in order to stop the run/quick hit game.
