Anybody got any info. on how the Summer workouts are progressing under our new S&C coach? Used to see photos of the guys in the old gym on Bama Mag but haven't seen any in a while. How do they like the new facilities? I am assuming Brodie, Spencer, and Wesley should be close to 100% by the start of August drills and hopefully A.C. will be in the mix too.

TTF:

I am a member of Crimsontradition.com and have seen many players interviewed about this exact topic and to a man, they all say that summer workouts are going great! Everybody has taken part in the workouts.

The biggest item that has come of Coach Johnston's program is his philosophy of having guys who will be in GREAT shape in the fourth quarter. The way they are describing it is this. I may not be able to lift 550lbs once, but I can now lift 400 lbs 10 times.

To a man they all believe they are in better shape. Also, the one other item that came out of the interviews is that under Coach Pollard (I'm not bashing him but stating fact according to the players) the players worked out on their own and if they showed up, they showed up and if they didn't, it wasn't a big deal. Well now, EVERY player actually does their reps in conjunction with every other player. The Coaches blow a whistle for down and another for up and so on. And the biggest thing is that if a player screws up on the last lift of the last round...they start the entire process over again...which builds teamwork and also enhances responsibility to everyone else on the team. The correlation is that if one person jumps off-sides it affects the entire team. Responsibility to your teammates is paramount.

Finally, they say that although the coaches can't demand that players work out, each position has a heirarchy and they DEMAND that each person show up for their workouts and if they don't, their own teammates are making them run!

Got a question....
What is the "lower gym" Coach Johnston and several posters have talked about? What kind of workout is that?
Also, I have heard on Crimsontraditions that they are working on mental toughness.... Without divulging any secrets, is there anybody that knows exactly how they are improving that?
Just curious.

Kinda slow...my foot hurts pretty bad--arthrits, I think, but I'm still hangin' in there, hitting it about 4-5 times a week...

Oh, you meant the team's workout...

"In short, Alabama fans have plenty to be proud of right now, and plenty to look forward to. And that pride and optimism isn’t only rooted in tangible accomplishment either. A lot of it is rooted in the class and character of the men who lead the program and of the young men who wear that crimson jersey."

Coosa:

The lower gym that is mentioned is the gym that almost all summer workouts were done in during Coach Bryants day. This is where the real HARD CORE guys would hit it really hard during the summer. Nothing fancy, but it is believed to have been the catalyst to our success all those year. It was a place where character building took place.

:
Thanks,
Thought I had heard that sometime in the past.
It will be neat to see this team. The left side of the O line will probably be the best in several years. QB's in good shape. Running Backs good. Defense will surprise, I believe.
Can't wait!

You may have already read these recent articles, but, if not, check this out...http://www.cw.ua.edu/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/07/14/40f4c17a99f4e (towards the bottom) and this...http://alabama.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=311433 (also towards the bottom). I really appreciate what Coach Pollard did for us because I know he made vast improvements to the S&C Program. But I see Coach Johnston as a step up and a huge hire for us. He had great success in the NFL for a reason and I believe we are seeing why. It really makes me laugh when I think of the all the hecklers (especially PF) taking shots at Coach Shula for "making the one coaching change in an area that didn't need it". Anyway, I believe we are in good hands!! RTR!!!

Here are a couple earlier Summer workout stories

Among the incoming class of freshmen who worked out with the squad this week are Trent Davidson, Aaron Johns, Travis Robinson and Jake Wingo.

Davidson said that he has lost fat and added muscle in the short time he’s been enrolled at Alabama and working out with the squad. Davidson looks ready for early playing time with a 6-6, 258 pound frame.

“I’ve been learning the plays and the formations and have really improved a lot over the last couple of weeks,” the T.R. Miller product said. “When you come to college you’re a little worried about fitting in and being accepted. There’s not a guy on this team who hasn’t made me feel wanted. I’ve worked a lot with the tight ends, but all the guys have really been great.”

Johns, from Thomasville, Ala., is currently living in Tuscaloosa, but does not plan to enroll in school until August. He is participating in pass skel drills with the team. Johns has been learning the ropes at tailback from the likes of Tim Castille, Le’Ron McClain and Kenneth Darby.

Robinson and Wingo both live in Tuscaloosa and have also been involved in the pass skel play. Robinson, a corner who is listed at 5-10, 180, has impressed current members of the squad with his speed and ability to break on the ball.

While Carter is concentrating on his own return this summer, he’s also sharing some of his experience with a receiving corps that is, on the whole, much less experienced. He is already the school’s No. 4 all-time receiver, and he plans to start a master’s degree program in the fall with a goal of becoming a coach, so he has plenty to share with the Tide’s other receivers.

“I think that’s the biggest part of the summer for me, helping the young guys," Carter said. “I really think that everything has happened for a reason and I am here [for a sixth year] to fulfill a purpose. I think that reason is so I can help the younger guys. Coach Cheese [Charlie Harbison] and the other coaches can’t be out there in the summer, so these young guys would be out in left field if they didn’t have someone with some experience around.

“I think the young guys are coming on really well. Matt Caddell and Tyrone Prothro are going to be excellent, and Matt Miller [who was a walk-on quarterback before switching to receiver] is doing really well. Keith Brown [one of Alabama’s 2004 signees] has just joined us, but he looks real athletic. I think it’s a good group, and the work ethic is awesome."

Still, Carter says he’s ready to be a competitor, as well as a mentor for his younger teammates.

“I’m ready to play," he said. “It’s been a long time, but I definitely plan to be out there in the first game."
