If AP re-votes their 2004 NC, should Auburn win it?

IF:
- USC receives NCAA sanctions that vacate wins in 2004.
- BCS declares no NC in 2004.
- AP re-votes for their champion.

Should the AP declare Auburn the NC for 2004? I vote yes. I suspect that's unlikely to be a popular opinion here. :eek2: However, Auburn was undefeated in SEC play. Granted, their OOC games were rediculous. However, their body of work in 2004 was better than anyone else's IMO (excluding USC). Surely Oklahoma has no claim; USC brutalized them.

What say you?

I think the AP should just follow suit with the BCS and declare no champion. Auburn didn't really prove anything against VT in their bowl game so I'm not sure their beef is legitimate anyway.

What a horrible way to be awarded the MNC. If there were a case for the +1 game, this was it. Sometimes a team deserves their due credit and AU should have had their CHANCE to be champions. Does this mean they will traded their other championship rings in?;)

IMO, when #1 falls then the #2 team should move up. Therefore, as bad as it hurts to type this, auburn should be the #1 team. They did finish as #2 in the final vote.

I'm not sure there is any modern precedent for this, so nothing changes in regard to the championship.

USC retains their MNC. IMO, of course.

If they make USC vacate all wins from that year, then Oklahoma will be undefeated also. I say split it between OU & Auburn. Utah was also undefeated that year too.

2004 revised championships based on victories stripped from USC:
BCS Champ = Oklahoma
AP Champ = Auburn

As I've been saying since it's inception. The BCS will be statistically about as good as the old bowl system at providing unified/un-split national championships. Obviously this situation is a special circumstance but it will be the 2nd split championship since the BCS began and I expect another in the next 5 years.

NO, vacate means no one won or lost.....just like in our case from the text book crap.....we all know who won those games, just like we all know USC won that game and were the national champs....so no the barn doesn't deserve it at all.

I'm ok with Auburn winning it. How hilarious would it be if this were the only way they could win a National Championship? It's perfect.

I think they should also never thought Ok should have been in that game in the first place. We will never know how a game between Auburn and USC would have turned out. Auburn had a far superior running game than did Ok that year.

forfeit means that the loss is replaced with a win by the losing team. Vacate only means that the winner is stripped of the win from the record books. Oklahoma's loss would still be there.

Let um have it. Auburn had a good team. If I put my prejudices to the side I have to say they were as good as anyone, better than most. I can't think of another team better that year except USC.

If I were Auburn I would have to have some pride. That is like some of these high school football teams making it to the playoffs with a 2-8 record. They didn't earn it. I know they were undefeated, but to win it because another team had to vacate it would just not make me happy at all if I were a fan of Auburn. Of course I am an Alabama fan, so pride just comes along with the terrritory.

No! I have no problem with them being champs, but there is no way of knowing if they would have beaten Oklahoma. You can't base it on them being SEC champs and winning their bowl game.

Not sure how prideful a fan base can be if they claim "People's Championship" :biggrin2:

I agree with the consensus. They should have it. I doubt there will be a formal acknowlegement from anyone, but stranger things have happened.

But it would still bug me that they would get to after all of the claiming that they have done. We complain all the time about the ones we feel were robbed from us. I guess from their viewpoint they think we did the same thing, but from my viewpoint what they did to claim this was embarassing.
