If Shula has losing season, will Bamanation stay on Shula's wagon?

Now that the level-headed and not-so-level-headed have spoken, I will interject with a level of pure knowledge of the situation and take my opinion out. I know that's hard for some to believe, but I will simply reiterate what Coach Moore and others have said since day one.

Coach Shula will be our coach come hell or high water for at least 5 years! There is no way that we can "Build" anything if we keep changing our head coach.

Now, I will add some opinion to this equation. I totally agree with whomever said it first...there will be massive changes under Shula, but he will remain regardless of what happens.

Also, don't forget...next year is supposed to be worse than this year from a pure numbers standpoint. That is why Shula has publically said since the A-Day luncheon that we should see up to 10 true freshman play a lot this year! We'll need some experience next year because the team will be so young.

And finally, there is literally NO WAY we have a losing season this year. I realistically see us at the very worst case scenario with 7 wins. Utah State, Western Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Southern Miss, Mississippi State and then we'll upset somebody else, although neither Ole Miss or Arkansas will be seen as truly upsets because they will be struggling to find an identity since both lost their major talent.

UNLESS, a few of the incoming frosh contribute and contribute early the '05-'06 season may be our worst in regards to the #'s. As example, take a look at the 2's on the OL.

My point exactly Terry! We'll need these young kids to come in and not only play, but be an impact player or '05 could be scary! The best thing we have going for us is our schedule this year "SHOULD" lend itself to getting those kids early playing time.

I am hopeful that we can finally build a lead on a few teams beginning with Utah State that will allow us to put the young kids in and get them serious game time experience! I don't care about Red Shirts today...I only care about playing time building for towards the future!

I'll be supporting our Coach regardless of how this season turns out. Of course I want to win every game, but I do know the situation (lack of depth, and in some positions talent, due to probabtion). I will be still be supporting CMS when he takes us back to glory, whether that be one year or five years or ten years!

RTR!!!

IMO shula wins 6 games he gets rid of kines and other mike price hires. 7 or more everything remains the same. im hopeful that the year is a BIG SUPRISE to the upside. 8-9 wins!!! shula will be given one more year regardless.

Coach Shula should be given the length of his contract to prove his worth. I don't think we have seen his finished project yet. We may see several changes in the next few years one of them winning more consistantly. I understand some people having little to no patience but it is a virtue that needs to be learned by our fans for a while. Let's become fans and supporters again. We will always have a least favorite coach or a player we love to hate but there is always a reason they are around even if that reason is they are the best available.

Because of the deep personal relationship between CMS and Kines, don't look for Shula to ever "get rid of" Kines. However, I could see Kines retiring or moving to an admin position - at a time of his choosing. The coach on the hot seat is Connelly - not only because of the poor OL performance last year (making a sow's ear out of a silk purse), but because he has earned some off-the-field black marks that particularly gall Shula. Also, he's not really interested in staying, if he can find something else. Problem is, we're paying him too much - it's a disincentive to move...

Obviously, how long Coach Shula stays depends on how well he coaches the team...I hope he stays for 25 years, but he must make 'better decisions' than he did last year to do it...he made some bone-head calls last year or at least his staff did...bone-head calls had nothing to do with talent on the field, it was just bad play calling...those calls cost us games...he can't survive bone-head calls very long...

After 4 games this year we will know what kind of season we'll have:

if we go 2-2 then we'll go 6-5 or 5-6
if we go 3-1 we'll be 7-4
if we go 4-0 we'll be 8-3

maybe the key game in the first 4 will be Ole Miss, we get them at home and if we can't handle them at home without Manning, then it may get ugly later on...

Back to the original question...

If Alabama has a losing season, it depends on HOW they lose...
If losses are due to injuries and depth, coach Shula can't be blamed.
If losses are due to boneheaded coaching, or lack of player fundamentals, you can bet your hindside Coach _______ will be held accountable (depending on where the breakdowns occur).

One thing is certain...Moms and Dads like CMS, and the guy can RECRUIT!!
That alone is better than any coach since CGS.

Let's not forget the motivational impact that coaching stability and post-season play
will have on this 2004 TEAM.
We'll all see a different TEAM on the field this Fall....it's already started in the gym and it'll be evident in the enthusiasm in which the Tide rises to each occasion.

Couldn't agree more Bayou! It is tough, but we all must understand that Rome wasn't built in a day and Alabama's tradition rich program didn't fall in a day either. Since Coach Bryant's retirement and untimely death, we have slowly but surely fallen to first the middle and then the bottom of the pack. Not only of college football, but also of our own once dominated conference.

To that end, we will not rebuild it in a day either! I do believe that Coach Shula has what it takes to lead us to the promised land once again, but also understand that we must be patient. I for one and willing to suffer a little bit longer to once again be a perennial top 10 team!

I will go one step further and say I think it is too early to say whether or not Coach Shula is the winner we are looking for. He has done a lot so far except win games and that is why it may be premature to start building temples in his honor. On that same note Alabama is going through the same period that Oklahoma and Miami went through after being hit by the NCAA. Neither of those programs bounced right back, it took more than a couple of years. So in light of that it is also too early to start looking for a scapegoat if things go hades again.

I want to believe in Coach Shula therefore I support him, his staff, and the team. Barring injuries, with the schedule we have Alabama could post a respectable record this season. If Alabama runs into problems on the field I think Coach Shula will continue to be his own man and use what he thinks is the best judgement to remedy the problem. Some of the problems Bama fans have complained about may iron themselves out then we will have a new list to complain about.

I expect to see a better product on the field this season. Now, if we can just stay healthy.........

We can talk about what should happen until we turn a nice shade of Penn State blue in the face, but what should happen and what will happen are completely different.

What should happen is for Alabama fans to look at the circumstances. If Alabama is 100% healthy in all games this year and only wins five of them, there's reason for concern. But if Alabama pulls a repeat of the 1990 season -- UA lost Craig Sanderson, Prince Wimbley and Siran Stacy in the first three games -- then five wins might be the best UA could do.

In that event, what should happen is for Alabama fans to bite their tongues and wait a couple of years. I say "a couple" because the 2005 season has the potential to be trouble no matter what happens in 2004, because of the impending losses to graduation on the lines of scrimmage.

What will happen, though, is the bandwagon will empty. People who have already been on Internet boards and talk radio promising to stick with Shula through thick and thin will jump, it's guaranteed, and it won't matter if we have a losing season because half the team contracted malaria and had to quit. That's just reality around here.

I've made it plain in a couple of articles last season that I think Shula has a lot to prove. However, if we keep having injury trouble, we won't know what we have and don't have. Furthermore, yes it is important not to keep going through coaches like some people go through tube socks. Alabama shouldn't even entertain the thought of making another coaching change based on on-field performance until at least after 2005 and more realistically after the 2006 season. And I don't think Alabama will, either.

The problem is talk radio..here's how it works. OK, lets say for instance, Bama drops a game to Ole Miss. This is certainly a possible scenario..Finebaum gets on the radio, starts talking about "Well if Bama looks this bad against Ole Miss, imagine how bad they will be against Tennessee"

You got jack azzes from Mobile, Montgomery, Nashville, Chattanoga and Bham, with everybody throwing in their $.02 about coach shula shoulda done this, or that, about how he's on the hot seat, ect..you got Vickers, the eternal antagonist, and all the aubies talking about how coach shula can't coach, Sly croom, yada yada. The % of Bama fans that call representing the "voice of Bama fans" is like 3%, and yet its these jerks that influence,if not the opinions, at least the impression of the bama nation. It may not be an accurate portrayal, but the impression of discontent creates pressure in the Athletic department, which creates division within the decision makers, which filters down to the players, which creates pressure and poor play.

I may be wrong, but Im of the impression that when we stand back and let our fellow Bama fans gripe about our coaches, it creates an irreversable cycle.

Finally my point- When Bama wins, stick your chest out, be proud, and look foward to next week. But if bama loses, if you can't find a positive, and you cant be proud just to be a bama fan..if you cant do that, then do us all a favor..turn your radio off, and keep your pesimistic opinions to yourself.

"Old Mexico...that sounds like the test of all test if you ask me....I'm in!"

I think it all depends on how many students show up for YELL CREW and whether or not the band is bigger and how well they play at halftime. Having a great band has gotten us through a couple of slumps.

The world view of the state of Alabama is formed by college athletics and a space center. The rest is not well publicized except perhaps historical politics--and a couple of new ones that zing.

I'd bet coach Shula hates losing every bit if not more than any of us do. If he doesn't make the progress that I'm sure he expects he should, then I would say it would be a safe bet he'd be the first to say so and let the powers to be know that it was time for a change.

I will support him and I believe in him.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!

Once again, I agree! I agree with Jess and I agree with a few others. The plain fact is that we have always had Bandwagon fans who jump ship at the first site of trouble and I say ....SEE YA! However, for the majority of well intentioned Bama fans...remember what the road to hell is paved with!

Finally, win, lose or draw I'm a Bama fan and have always been one and will continue to be one. The difference is; what I've said in the past is this...yes, I see the world through Crimson Colored Glasses, but also know that the reality is we still have a way to go!
