Infrastructure: Memphis I40 bridge over Mississippi river closed indefinitely after stress fracture discovered

Since moving to Charleston 3+ years ago I have discovered that it is a collection of "islands" or "marsh" separated by rivers. You have to go over a bridge to go anywhere...some are really old and others are newer...all are scenic. The queen of the bridges, Ravenel, was discovered to have some stress fractures a couple of years ago. Never completely shut down, but lanes closed as they repaired the cables.

They're not applying 1.2 million pounds of pressure, but I'll let that slide. If they're using PT cables before doing cover plates, that makes me wonder if they're trying to close the gap. Maybe it just means they're using PT cables to take the tension that the girder is "supposed" to be taking. They could be using those cables to temporality take this fake tension that's no longer present, remove the bad section, rehab/coverplate, then remove the cables. Interesting.

Also, I bet that failed chunk of steel goes to a lab and has all of the stuff done to it.

The entire issue here, the entire core of the negotiation, actually has nothing to do with Republicans. It’s about negotiations and agreements between Democrats. The only reason Republicans are even involved in one of the two parts of the package is as a way to secure deal among Democrats – specifically between Biden, Chuck Schumer and Manchin and Sinema.

Indeed, in his statement Biden makes the heart of the matter really clear. Linkage – the idea that both bills must happen together to gain the President’s support, or indeed the support of congressional Democrats – has nothing to do with Republicans. It doesn’t rely on their votes. It asks nothing of them. It’s an agreement between Democrats about legislation Republicans universally oppose. That’s the awkwardness of the Republicans position. They can’t point to [any] pledge Biden has reneged on or new condition he’s placed on them.

i'm not sure who he embarrassed. the gop was not surprised by this, so if they are embarrassed, it is on them. regardless, i don't think it's going to fall on its face. i guess we will see.
