Because he already has the size to play the position and he knows how to bring the wood. All he needs to grasp is the mental part and a RS this year would certainly help him do that. Why would CS want to start a senior at LB when he could start a freshman with more position-specific talent and experience.
Nail meet hammer. Excellent post!I think somebody has already said this, but I've never seen a player that has done so little get sooooo much attention. I mean, I like JJ, but he was brought into a bad situation. He was given his shot at QB and he is a decent RB, but with his size, he SHOULD be playing LB. He helped us out at RB when we were in dire need, but if all our backs would have been healthy, he wouldn't have played.
It sounds like there was a power stuggle or player struggle between the coaches and it's not JJ's fault........ask yourself this, if Saban would have been here to start with, how long do you think JJ would have been on offense??? The answer is, not long!! He would have been given a shot, but in the end, he would have had three full years (maybe more) at LB and would be thriving alongside McClain.
I just hate that there was no leadership under Shula!!!
Sorry, I'll get off my Anti-Shula Soapbox now...... :BigA:
Ha. I was gonna use JJ, but thought some might think I was talking about Julio Jones, and I must have kept the Jones part in my head.Is Jimmy related to Joey now?
I was not aware that JJ ever practiced at the QB position. Are you certain of this?He was given his shot at QB
I agree that Saban probably wouldn't be willing to make a redshirt year available for a guy with only one remaining year of eligibility...its just not a good trade-off investment-wise.Either way, you can rest assured it's one and done for Johns. A redshirt isn't really a viable option.
Didn't we only have around 15 scholly seniors last year? And Saban signed 32:eek2:. He knew we would have several guys go on medical scholly, and he also knew we'd have some transfer out like Coger. We won't sign 30+ again this year, and maybe not even 25. But I think it's a safe bet Saban will clear room for at least a class of 20 or so. Andrew Bone has predicted that we will sign between 20-25 in 2009....which is about right. I think we'll sign 20-23 myself....so it will be a smaller class....but not ungodly small. And yes, a smaller class means Saban isn't likely to redshirt JJ so he can raise his draft status when he has guys like Jerrell Harris, Hightower, Upshaw and Nico Johnson waiting in the wings. It would be a total waste for the team...but I do feel bad for Jimmy....he chose to play for Bama against all in-state pressure.....so I hope he catches on and has a solid senior year he can be proud of. Study that playbook Jimmy!!!!!!I agree that Saban probably wouldn't be willing to make a redshirt year available for a guy with only one remaining year of eligibility...its just not a good trade-off investment-wise.
However, I disagree with your dire predictions regarding the size of our 2009 recruiting class. Saban has 16 months to clear space for 2009 signees and I don't think he's even close to culling the heard of problem/non-productive scholarship players.
As harsh as it may sound, there's probably 30-35 players currently on scholarship that Saban would've never considered recruiting or who aren't measuring up to his standards in regards to work ethic and dedication. He needs the numbers for this fall, but after that, I think there will be another "reduction in force" to make way for another 25 man class of Saban recruits. Saban just doesn't seem the type to delay his rebuilding efforts by hanging on to non-productive players until they graduate. JMHO.
Yes, he did!! I was told by my super-secret undercover agent who has a camera mounted on a satellite over Tuscaloosa. He told me that he definitely saw Johns, and I quote, "pick up a football and throw it to another player". He DID mention, however, that it was hard to see if he was throwing to a receiver or if he was just throwing the ball back to the line of scrimmage because there were 7 other orange satellites in between his and the field. He couldn't tell if they were Tenn Urnge or AuBarn Urnge, but they were definitely spy satellites. After the A-Day game, they have turned tail and ran in fear and have burned up in the atmosphere. Hopefully, in the future, I'll be able to better answer such questions since we have a better view of the practice field now. :biggrin2:I was not aware that JJ ever practiced at the QB position. Are you certain of this?
Personally, I would think JJ redshirting would be a longshot.
I think he'll be a starter.
He took a snap or two at QB in a game. I vividly recall CMS on the CMS show say something like, "And some people said he'd never play QB," while they showed the clip.I was not aware that JJ ever practiced at the QB position. Are you certain of this?
