Re: Is a redshirt a possibility for Jimmy Jones?

My opinion, based on nothing other than my opinion, is that we'll need the scholarship slot to give away for 09 signing day. Who will be better after one year of collegiate practice, JJ or Jerrell Harris?

PS, if JJ had bought in to things from the beginning he might have earned the leeway. I'm not sure his 2 month turnaround has earned that. Again, I may be totally off base.

Is Jimmy related to Joey now? You can't blame Jimmy for wanting to redshirt now that he's switched positions. You only get 1 chance to make a good first impression in the NFL, and coming into the combine with 1 year of experience at a position might scare a lot of teams off. The only thing Jimmy needs to worry about if he does redshirt, will he even get on the field next year. With Jerrell, Courtney, Dont'a and Devon'ta coming in and Rolando McClain an established starter, Jimmy will have to fight an uphill battle for playing time. Why would CS want to start a senior at LB when he could start a freshman with more position-specific talent and experience.

if JJ is popular with the teammates, it might go a long way for comraderie and morale to show loyalty to a senior. it would show the other players that saban really does stick by his players and if you buy in to his system then he will back you up and do whats best for you. i agree with what tide & titan had to say, but sometimes it is worth making 1 sorta odd decision regarding one player if it positively impacts the other 84 players and makes them play even harder for you.

Because he already has the size to play the position and he knows how to bring the wood. All he needs to grasp is the mental part and a RS this year would certainly help him do that.

Re: Is a redshirt a possibility for Jimmy Jones?

I think somebody has already said this, but I've never seen a player that has done so little get sooooo much attention. I mean, I like JJ, but he was brought into a bad situation. He was given his shot at QB and he is a decent RB, but with his size, he SHOULD be playing LB. He helped us out at RB when we were in dire need, but if all our backs would have been healthy, he wouldn't have played.
It sounds like there was a power stuggle or player struggle between the coaches and it's not JJ's fault........ask yourself this, if Saban would have been here to start with, how long do you think JJ would have been on offense??? The answer is, not long!! He would have been given a shot, but in the end, he would have had three full years (maybe more) at LB and would be thriving alongside McClain.
I just hate that there was no leadership under Shula!!!

Sorry, I'll get off my Anti-Shula Soapbox now...... :BigA:

Re: Is a redshirt a possibility for Jimmy Jones?

As some have talked about it earlier, I just cannot see it as a legitimate possibility given the 2009 recruiting class.

We only have thirteen seniors anyway, and that will go down to twelve when / if Zeke Knight does not return. If that happens and Johns redshirts, that is one more scholarship not freed up, and suddenly we only have eleven people going out. We will be against the 85 anyway -- and possibly even have greyshirts -- and that will make our 2009 recruiting class ungodly small. It is already going to be one of the smallest classes in the country, and we really don't need to be taking steps to make it smaller.

Honestly, Johns could probably use a redshirt at this point, but I don't see where the coaching staff would consider it a viable option. As bad as I hate to say it, if Jimmy really wanted to redshirt, he shouldn't have been so vehemently adamant about not playing linebacker and staying at tailback.

Either way, you can rest assured it's one and done for Johns. A redshirt isn't really a viable option.

I agree that Saban probably wouldn't be willing to make a redshirt year available for a guy with only one remaining year of eligibility...its just not a good trade-off investment-wise.

However, I disagree with your dire predictions regarding the size of our 2009 recruiting class. Saban has 16 months to clear space for 2009 signees and I don't think he's even close to culling the heard of problem/non-productive scholarship players.

As harsh as it may sound, there's probably 30-35 players currently on scholarship that Saban would've never considered recruiting or who aren't measuring up to his standards in regards to work ethic and dedication. He needs the numbers for this fall, but after that, I think there will be another "reduction in force" to make way for another 25 man class of Saban recruits. Saban just doesn't seem the type to delay his rebuilding efforts by hanging on to non-productive players until they graduate. JMHO.

Didn't we only have around 15 scholly seniors last year? And Saban signed 32:eek2:. He knew we would have several guys go on medical scholly, and he also knew we'd have some transfer out like Coger. We won't sign 30+ again this year, and maybe not even 25. But I think it's a safe bet Saban will clear room for at least a class of 20 or so. Andrew Bone has predicted that we will sign between 20-25 in 2009....which is about right. I think we'll sign 20-23 myself....so it will be a smaller class....but not ungodly small. And yes, a smaller class means Saban isn't likely to redshirt JJ so he can raise his draft status when he has guys like Jerrell Harris, Hightower, Upshaw and Nico Johnson waiting in the wings. It would be a total waste for the team...but I do feel bad for Jimmy....he chose to play for Bama against all in-state pressure.....so I hope he catches on and has a solid senior year he can be proud of. Study that playbook Jimmy!!!!!!

Re: Is a redshirt a possibility for Jimmy Jones?

I was not aware that JJ ever practiced at the QB position. Are you certain of this?
Yes, he did!! I was told by my super-secret undercover agent who has a camera mounted on a satellite over Tuscaloosa. He told me that he definitely saw Johns, and I quote, "pick up a football and throw it to another player". He DID mention, however, that it was hard to see if he was throwing to a receiver or if he was just throwing the ball back to the line of scrimmage because there were 7 other orange satellites in between his and the field. He couldn't tell if they were Tenn Urnge or AuBarn Urnge, but they were definitely spy satellites. After the A-Day game, they have turned tail and ran in fear and have burned up in the atmosphere. Hopefully, in the future, I'll be able to better answer such questions since we have a better view of the practice field now. :biggrin2:
Sorry, didn't mean to get goofy on ya, but I don't KNOW that he was given a shot, but since he was told that he would be given a shot, i can only ASSume that he tried.
Regardless, if he wanted to play QB, he had a better chance at Miss St than he did at Bama. Croom was right on that one.

I'm still glad that he chose us, but like I said before, I wish he would have started learning the LB position 4 years ago!!!!

Re: Is a redshirt a possibility for Jimmy Jones?

We don't lose any of our current LB's to graduation next year unless you count Zeke and we've got plenty of LB talent coming in with the recruiting class. Our situation only gets better a year from now.

Why would you redshirt a guy who's been practicing the position so that MAYBE you can play him AFTER your depth issues have been resolved... or at least alleviated?

He took a snap or two at QB in a game. I vividly recall CMS on the CMS show say something like, "And some people said he'd never play QB," while they showed the clip.
