Is Coach Saban losing his edge........

Is Coach Saban losing his edge on closing the deal with these big time recruits, or are they just scared of the competition that they will face and choose to go where there is a better chance for them for early playing time? No knock on the players, I know that these elite athletes want to go in and start day one, but are they hurting themselves by going to these other schools?

I prefer to think it is the latter, that our cupboard is starting to run over with talent, but it still stings that we lost both Mitchell and Rome yesterday. Hopefully, we can close out with some big time names on NSD, just wish we had room to take them all.

Mods, if this is a repeat please remove if necessary........

Thanks,
Bama Greg

We didn't exactly finish with a roar last class either. But that's the ADD element of following this stuff. For heaven's sake, look at whom we already have? Look at whom we're about to get?

Go ahead and test Nick Saban's edge. Just be prepared to lose a couple of fingers.

I don't think CNS is "losing" any edge, I think yesterday was more of an isolated incident. Everyone knew Rome was going to UGA and as much as we were all hopeful about Mitchell, it's really no surprise that he followed Rome to Athens.

I think Mitchell made a mistake (obviously) in his choice, but I'm sure he was swayed a little bit by his high school teammate committing to UGA. These ARE still teenagers were talking about here.

Mitchell is a suprise, but Rome was always a lock for UGA.

If anybody watched the Georgia defense helplessly flail their purses at RB's and receivers this past season, it is pretty obvious where the playing time is easily available. The recruits have said as much, although I think they are missing the point about how well they will be conditioned and coached up over there.

We won't get everybody we want, and there are countless, legitimate reasons on why that is. I think it might be a bit of an overreaction to say that Saban has lost his recruiting touch because of one player who is attending the home state school with his good buddy.

Exactly!:)

Besides, if you follow recruiting over a period of years for a particular school, you'll see how things go in cycles. Lots of factors in that, but a lot of it has to do with the players' perception of playing time (early) depending on who they know is on the depth chart in front of them. Also, the more a school focuses on out-of-state recruits, the more that home turf challenge comes into play. These kids are under immense pressure to stay in their home state schools. They often cave to that pressure, no matter the other circumstances at play.

We've all talked about how the talent level in the state of Alabama is down this year, so we're going after more kids in other states. It's a much harder pull especially when it's between you and the home state school. We're going to finish with a top three class no matter what.

Definitely a bad year by our standards. Agree with the above statement that it's hard to turn someone out of state from going to the state school with a friend, but we aren't going great in the state of Alabama this year either.

With that said, we're in much better shape in Alabama next year. No big deal if we can get back on track next year. If not, ...

Oh he is absolutely losing his edge. I mean how could we be in 2nd place on Rivals with the possibilty of moving to 1st (Cyrus and Clowney). He is absolutley lost it.

bad year? i thought we were sitting at #2 or so. talk about not seeing the forest for the trees

With consideration to how young and deep we are at DB, I wouldn't expect the #1 DB this year to commit to us. Mitchell was told he would get a "shot" at WR at both schools, but he would more than likely end up on defense. He would't play in our system for awhile. We've got the past 2 years #1 DB's, and BOTH played early. BOTH are starters, and now have pretty good experience now. You expect as a #1 at your positioin, to contribute early and that just wouldn't be the case fo Mitchell. Years pryo to CNS,we weren't even on the radar of top recruits. Wait and see how many we end up with. I'm actually surpised you asked the question

The problem is that a lot of people have that " what have you done for me lately" mentality. If anyone thinks CNS is "losing his edge" just needs to go and look at the committment list. This is a already a great class and anyone else we add is just icing on the cake. I really don't get all of the chicken little - the sky is falling thoughts...Everything is just fine @ Bama . Plus people also forget all the players that have redshirted from last year's class that we haven't even see play....it's gonna be ok , I promise....

NO WAY!! We have an incredible recruiting class. Full of 4 and 5 star players!!! Please tell me this is not a serious question!?!?!

To be quite frank w/all of talent we have in T-Town right now, I'm amazed that so many blue chippers are still committing to us and not afraid of the competition. Remember, it's one thing to bring in 4 or 5 star talent, coaching them up to their potential is another matter altogether. Remember Florida's class last year. They were stockpiled w/4 and 5 star guys. One of their recruits even said that they would compete for @ least 2 or 3 national championships. Call me crazy but I just don't see that happening.

If CNS is losing his edge, just think what it would be like if he was REALLY on top of his game,,,,, 25 5 star recruits.

This is not an attack on the OP but just a statement in general of how I feel after yesterday's disappointing recruiting news. I tell you I am as upset as the next person about Malcolm Mitchell commiting to UGA. What is shocking to me are angry reactions of what seems to be a lot of the Bama fan base yesterday and even into today surprises me.

It seems when a recruit that is thought, for good reasons, to be coming to Bama, makes a personal decision to go elsewhere it causes something along the lines of a meltdown. Some of the things being said after the fact are just plain mind boggling to me. I really wish we had a scratching head smiley. :conf2:

A statement attributed to MM yesterday along the lines of 'if you want to play right away then Bama isn't the place' probably tells us all we need to know about the recruiting challenges we are facing and will face in the future.

I certainly don't know what transpired yesterday between Malcolm and the UGA recruiters but I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches pointed out to him the number of skill players we had recruited or had returning and that barring a probable red-shirt, defensive back was only place he would see any playing time.

We knew this was coming, y'all. Our tremendous recruiting success would eventually be used against us.

Keep up the great work Coach Saban and staff!

LOL, I have the exact sentiments. We miss on 1 player and CNS is losing his touch. We are at #2 nationally on Rivals (I don't follow Scout or ESPN). We have pretty much filled our needs with the exception of an OT and DE (I'd have liked to added another DB, but Washington and Ha-Ha are very good in their own right).

This is right on. The more Bama recruits out of state, the higher degree of losing that recruit to the home state schools. Alabama's prospects were generally down this year so CNS and staff had to look elsewhere. Next years in state recruits are extremely higher rated and you have already seen Bama receive commitments from severl.

I do hope everyone realized my post was sarcasm. We are #2 on Rivals and loaded with recruits that are either A. Not demanding of immediate playing time and are willing to work for it or B. Competitive enough to come in and compete for playing time. Either way I would rather lose recruits that only think "I want to play now no matter if it hurts the team or not". Truly hope Coach Saban stays with Bama for another twenty years.
