I agree on the assistants to an extent. After Pelini left I asked the question if Miles was as good at identifying young assistant coaches as Saban. Of course the typical response from the LSU posters here was that Miles was just as good at everything. Now that may not be entirely true. I'm not sure about Crowton, but I never thought Chavis was bad. Heck his defense was the only bright spot on Fulmer's UT teams.
You are right that Miles has certainly kept the recruiting up, so there has to be another explanation for LSU's decline. Personally I think it's the head guy, not the assistants. I think Miles' "fly by the seat of his pants" gambling methods worked in prior years, but his "luck" has finally turned and he's been bitten by them. To al the LSU posters, I'm not saying he's a bad coach. In fact, I think he is a very good coach; just not an elite one. Thus, with all else being relatively equal he will more often than not fall to an elite coach. But I think there are only a handful of elite coaches out there, and thankfully we have one of them.
Crowton and Chavis are decent coaches, but neither one is likely to be on anyone's short list for head coaching job.
You're right on the last point, too. There aren't many top notch coaches out there, but one of'em prowls our sidelines.
