Penn State reportedly fires James Franklin after loss to Northwestern

Penn State is moving on from James Franklin.

According to ESPN, Franklin is out as the team’s coach following a 22-21 upset loss to Northwestern on Saturday. The loss dropped the preseason No. 2 Nittany Lions to 3-3 on the season and was the team’s second straight defeat as a 20-point favorite. A week earlier, Penn State lost 42-37 at a previously-winless UCLA team as a 24.5-point favorite.

Penn State’s fall during the 2025 season was sudden. The Nittany Lions were 3-0 ahead of a top-five matchup against Oregon. After losing in double overtime to the Ducks, PSU has gone from potential national title contender to needing a new coach in the span of three weeks.

It's a humble pie moment, though. I honestly thought when they hired Franklin that he was the right person for the job, he would put them back in the national picture. And to an extent he did. But he went from "well, he can't beat the good teams but he doesn't lose to anyone else" to falling flat in 15 days.

I expect Fickle will be fired soon and Franklin will be Wisconsin’s #1 choice

I know they struggled lately, but what kind of pockets do they have up there? Better find an alum who works for cheap, $49 million will buy a lot of defensive linemen.

One thing, though, is this: with all of the predictable stories about the dearth of African-American head coaches in CFB (not really true any longer as there are 15, slightly below the national percentage), it cannot be reasonably argued that Franklin - with 11-plus seasons at the helm - did not get a fair shot.

And he did do well enough at both Vandy and Penn State that he will without question not be out of work for long.
