I was thinking about where I would want Jimmy Johns to play.

As I was thinking it over, I decided that he is a 'freak' as a lot of positions, but is he is not spectacular at any position. I am thinking that he may be a solid RB, QB, LB, but never to an All American level at any of the three. His running style is more that of a FB than that of a RB.

What do yall think?

...

everyone is always hyping jimmy up... like hes proven something... personally i dont see where they get all this hype @?... i mean he has great size and speed but... he did nothing to make me think that he'd be a great RB... he looks soo odd when he runs the ball... and he has no moves and i've never seen him just run someone over like i have leron mcclain ..i personally cannot see johns staying at RB like the coaches have said he will.... i just dont really see the potential... but i guess i dont see him in practice every day and i dont know how to scout RB's.... i would love for him to flourish as a RB tho.. b/c he is enormous for RB... 6'2 240?? jeeeeez.. nobody would wanna tackle him... i hope he gets a shot at QB tho... im not knocking JJ.. b/c i think he will be a great player where ever he plays but he is a true sophomore now and people make him out to be a god... i just dont see it yet

You made those determinations by just "thinking it over"? In the interest of fairness, don't you think you should actually see someone play a position before passing judgement on them and their abilities?

He was a freshman in 2005. Did you really think he'd be a heisman candidate? Maybe we'll all be content to let the coaching staff make those types of decisions. I personally think he's a very good athlete and the coaches are looking for the most beneficial way to use his talents.

The guy is a true frehsman jeez. The staff seems to think he has more potential than anyone else on the team. Enough said.

Now, TMac how could you ever say something like that? You know on the Internet "we" decide how and where and what a player wil be - the $$$$$$ the schools pay the coaches is just so it can be said "our" coach is the highest paid in the country!!! You know that "we" know more than anyone how good a player is - I just can not believe anyone would think other wise - especially someone with the ### of posts that you have!!!
;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) soon to be ;)

LB, damnit!

I really, really, REALLY would like to see him at LB. Yes, I know, I've heard all the reasons why he won't be tried there, but that doesn't change my opinion that his gifts would be best suited at LB. Just my humble opinion.

I think you need to go back to the kitchen and focus on corn biscuits rather than evaluate talent.

He reminds of Freddie Millons, not the moves that Freddie had, but the desire to play at any position, thus putting a little more stress on a defense, not sure where or what he is going to do.
Please give him a break, I know the time of the year is slow, but for goodness sake, bring up something else.

Some of yall need to calm down a little.

I didnt say he was a bad player. I think he will make a really good running back. But some of the people on this board think Jimmy Johns is the second coming of Shaun Alexander. I was wondering why yall thought that (I hope he is). But I guess if you disagree with a topic now you just bash someone, instead of following up with why you disagree. ;)

If you noticed...

I gave the reason that Sparky thinks he's special. And he should know talent. However, I agree with the rest of posters that the title is awful. "Overrated" is usually the modifier used just above "bust" on the expectation thermometer. I'm going to change it to something a little less charged...

Obviously, to come in as a true freshman and get meaningful carries at tailback, play special teams, even take a snap or two under center on the keeper/sweep thing is impressive to me.

I've liked him on the offensive side since day one. Where is he first string? That's a good question. He's a hybrid type player. He's the closest thing to a two way player on the team.

He's not going to be the same player a year or two from now.

He could re-define some things before it's over.

I'll tell you one thing, there is no down side to him as a player.

Isn't there a phrase for exactly what the origingal poster is trying to convey - "Jack of all trades, master of none"? I can see that, with Jimmy. Not saying I agree, necessarily, but I can see why one might be inclined to think so.

JJ may not ever beat out JPW at QB, nor McElroy.
JJ likely won't unseat Darby at RB, or Ford/Upchurch/Grant behind him (although I could be wrong)
JJ would make a good LB, but would he be as good as Ryans/Roach?

So while none of the other players have his versatility, he's not as talented in any one field as the others are in their one field of specialty.

Although if Coach Woods said JJ could play RB on Sundays, then perhaps I'm wrong about his talent at RB... Don't misunderstand me, I think he's a fantastic back, and has LOADS of potential, I just think it would be hard for him to beat out guys who have not only been playing RB for several years, but who have also been playing it extremely well (like Ford, Upchurch, Grant, etc.).

But I agree, terrible original thread title!
