Did I misunderstand or did anyone else hear Coach Saban say he thought Josh was a natural at the DE position? Obviously, Josh has the size @ 6' 300lbs but is he fast enough to be a effective pass rusher from the end position rather than Nose guard. Thoughts??

Well i didn't hear what coach saban said but if its good enough for saban its good enough for me. :PDT_Armataz_53:

Just to be sure because sometimes I get confused with the names of the D-linemen in Saban's system, but is this the actual DE that Gilberry left or is this Greenwood's position? Because it would seem to me that he could probably play Greenwood's since that requires JC to be a DT most of the time. But if it's DE I also wonder if he has the speed. I watched the press conference, and I believe Saban said that he had lost a little weight and gained a little strength. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The jack LB is really a fourth down lineman most of the time. You could actually think of our front as:

DE/LB - DT - NT - SDE

Well, that is not what I would have expected, but obviously Saban knows a whole lot more about it than I do. Obviously, I'll defer judgment to him.

If we move Chapman to end, to go along with Greenwood, Deaderick, and Davis, and then have Washington and Murphy / Cody at tackle, we are going to be one very tough team to run the football against.

You may be right, but thats not what it says here.

From the article above: (Sophomore Josh Chapman took snaps at backup defensive end behind senior Bobby Greenwood, and Saban took time to praise the efforts of the sophomore nose guard, saying he appeared to be a “natural” at that position.)

may have misheard it, watched the whole interview yesterday....

the videos are here if you feel like watchin.

I don't think speed at DE is as important as quickness and beating the OT off the snap on a consistent basis. If a DE can do that, usually, he's got that OT beat. From what I understand, Chapman has spent A LOT of time in the weight room and has really improved. Regardless, my guess is he plays a good bit next fall regardless of position.

Richard Seymour is a 3-4 DE and he's 6-6, 300 pounds. Now is that a DT or DE? The Jack LB is the 3-4's version of a 4-3 weak-side DE, the difference is that the Jack can stand up like a linebacker or even drop back into man or zone coverage assignments.

Chapman's primary position is never on the "End" even when the Jack is standing up. His "natural" position, the one that Saban was talking about is NG. It goes Weakside DE (currently Deaderick), NG (currently Washington), DT (currently Greenwood) & Jack. So in the 3 front the Jack becomes a linebacker and the "DT" becomes an End in the technical sense.

This horse is dead...I need some Spring practice news in a bad way...and make it some good news..

I think the way they lay it out is:

DE- NG- DE- Jack

The left DE is your pass rusher...the right DE is a combo DT/DE guy.
