JPW's midseason grade

I'll admit, while I didn't have a lot of "concern" about JPW, I did feel he'd make some mistakes that eventually would cost us a game. Is Florida an example?

I'll also admit I expected him to play like a QB seeing the field for the first time. On that point, he hasn't.

What has come as a shock to me is he looks, at times, like a seasoned QB...one with a couple of years of experience under his belt.

So everyone agrees that in his sophomore year this year, Wilson looks better than a comparable sophomore Brandon Cox did in his first starting season last year?

I would say he is doing fine. I worry less this year about our qb durability, given the beatings Brodie, et al, have had to bear in the last few years.

Anyone have a stat on qb sacks at this point last year compared to this year? Seems like less. Due to maybe John Parker's mobility or improved pass blocking or both.

:biga2:

He is 5-2. That is his grade (so far).

He has far more talent than I would have guessed. He has played tremendously with the exception of a quarter against Florida and a play or two against Ole Miss.

If a quarterback shows up at Alabama before JPW graduates that can challenge him for the #1 job, that is a talented young man. I think he has a lock on the job for the rest of his career.

Against Florida, he got frustrated when he got behind, he forced things when he got frustrated, and he put his team further behind when he forced things.

He is a playmaker and a star, but I wish he were pre-med and familiar with the Hippocrates dictum from Epidemics, Bk. I, Sect. XI:

"Disguise the pass, diagnose the pressure, foretell the blitz; practice the fakes. As to exploiting defenses, make a habit of two things — to help, or at least to do no harm." - paraphrased

There may not be much difference between losing by one touchdown or losing by two touchdowns; but there is a big difference between being behind by one touchdown and being behind by two touchdowns with over eight minutes to play.

The only statistic John Parker Wilson ever needs to consider is won-loss percentage.

B+

To be fair, I am using a grading scale that I would use on any QB in the nation regardless of experience. Hardly any QB would earn an A+ except for the elite of the elite. I guess Leinart would be the only QB lately that would come close.

Having said that, if JPW had led us to a winning TD against Florida, he would have gotten a solid A-. His main weakness is being able to relax during the crunch times and not force the passes. He did look a lot calmer during the OT win against Ole Miss. Lets see how he does in Neyland this weekend... if he passes the test there then away we goooooo!

:BigA: I would give JP an A. He is a young qb, & as mentioned earlier, a TRUE sophomore. This is his first year to start. I think under these circumstances he has done very good. He's proved my doubts that I had about him earlier in the year to be wrong...& I'm glad. He'll keep gettin better with time. I think for the most part he makes good decisions:scrambling, throwing it away, etc. I'm proud to have him.:BigA:

Grade - B+, but for a first year starter, that is awesome.

IMO, he is a better all-around QB right now than Brodie was as a senior - though not the leader that Brodie was at that point. When he becomes the leader, not just the QB, he will earn the A...

I will give him a B+. Agree with the floaters comment. has to know when to put that much air under it and when to throw on a rope. He has done a better job that I thought he would have by this point in his career.

Well, the UF game is the only game where he made MAJOR mistakes that cost us severely, BUT I think if you discount that game he's a solid A-...with the UF game (which we obviously can't overlook) I've gotta move him to a B or even B-, but STILL far ahead of what most people thought he might be!

I've always believed JPW would be GREAT, and I have no reason to think otherwise 1/2 way through the season!

C
He has a weak arm, hasn't beat anyone he wasn't supposed to beat, too many interceptions(tipped balls or not), fumble that cost us the arkansas game(with a little help from the kicker), went nuts during the florida game at the end, overthrows receivers too often, has not made good decisions consistently.

I liken his performance to joe kines. Everyone thinks he's great but his defense has not performed.

Wait until we beat teams we are not supposed to beat before you guys annoint the kid. Also, he has to come up big in big game. I am very afraid of his arm strength, he is not an effective deep passer and in shula's offense deep passes are required. He floats everything over 25 yards it seems.

What? :eek2: Have you watched a single game this year? :conf2:

I smell an Aubie...

Nice first post...

NyBamaFan,

Instead of calling me an aubie, why not refute the points I made. I suspect you cannot. Everything I said was factual.

I have to say this simply because nobody else has.

In his first 7 games as a starter he is 10 fold better than the over-hyped Brodie was. Don't get me wrong, I like Brodie and am glad he was our QB, but frankly he was never GREAT with the exception of the first few games of his Junior year before he was hurt.

Finally, I don't agree at all with the comment made regarding his Arm strength! His arm is every bit as strong as any QB in this league with the exception of Jamarcus Russell. You don't need a GUN to be an effective QB and his arm is perfectly fine. Whatever problems he has, it's not his arm strength at issue.

He has been a solid A with the exception of the Florida game and frankly I don't count the one tipped interception in the first quarter. That ball hit the receiver in the hands and should have been a catch. As for the 2nd tipped ball, it wasn't a good pass, nor was the terrible over through with 5 or so minutes to go in the game.

With that said, JPW has done EVERYTHING (including the Florida game) as a QB that he could do. He DID NOT lose us the Florida game, Chris Leak, Tim Tebow and Dallas Baker won that game for Florida.

NyBamaFan,

No - your post was hateful. How do you blame a QB for an interception after a tip? How do you blame a QB for a loss to FL or Arkansas? From what do you form your opinion that he has a weak arm?

You state BS as fact and want me to climb into that pit with you? I don't think so.

NyBamaFan,

"hateful," you are way messed up man. Why don't you put away the antidepressants for awhile.

I am not the only one who has said JPW has a weak arm, it has been widely reported on when he was recruited. Plus, why does he float everything over 25 yards if he doesn't have a weak arm. Have you seen any of his deep passes this year, they look like they have helium in them, or have you seen his deep out passes, which are begging to be intercepted almost everytime. I like the kid but saying he doesn't have a weak arm is absurd. Shula needs to stop calling that pro style offense with deep outs or I bet he will throw a pick-six soon. Also, some tipped passes are his fault, he threw the ball to hard for underneath receivers and either too high or behind the receiver. His decision making has been bad because he throws the ball too hard on occasion to the underneath guys, throws into double coverage etc. And the arkansas game in gave up a fumble recovery for a touchdown. I guess that had nothing to do with the loss. Florida, are you kidding me, he threw some bad interceptions. Anything else you would like me to refute NYBamaFan?
