Justin Knox Transferring from Alabama

Heard that transfer was mainly due to playing time and that Grant is working on signing a 3rd player during the late signing period.

In other Bama b'ball news, Pettway's been demoted to Director of Basketball Operations. Tony Pujol will swap places with Pettway. Not good news for Pettway's coaching career/longevity with this coaching staff. Pettway will no longer be allowed to actively recruit or take part in on the floor coaching, per NCAA rules. It wouldn't surprise me to see Pettway look for opportunities elsewhere.

This could be one of two things. The talent coming in will be really good or we have no chance of making the NCAA tournament next year. I hope for the first.

According to Gentry Estes this morning, "A "strong suspicion" of tampering was behind UA's decision to not release basketball player Justin Knox from his scholarship to transfer to UAB, a source close to the situation told the Press-Register on Wednesday." Darien Knox, Justin's uncle is an AAU basketball coach. Did the AAU Coach act as Justin's agent or did UAB officials have inappropriate contact with Justin?

I hope this is the case, because it just sounds ugly otherwise, and there have been several instances of athletes transferring to UAB and vice versa. I don't want the face of recruiting to shift AU's way (if you lump in their recent signees), no matter if reality is different from perception (their signess are borderline academic, the situation with Knox could be UAB tampering, and don't forget SNASS, for now). I'm guessing the blame was with UAB tampering after listening to Darien on the radio yesterday, but I have not a clue.

"Darien Knox, the player's uncle, said UA's action in limiting Justin Knox's options has been hurtful to the family.

“In our family, since the time I was knee-high, it's been about Alabama,” Darien Knox said. “Justin came in, played hard, got a good education, never embarrassed the program, stayed out of trouble and will graduate in three years. And this is how they do him?"

This quote leads some credence to the tampering claim. Why would he be so upset? He's going to graduate, and he can play at about 300 D1 schools. What's so special about UAB? Color me very suspicious.

Color me very suspicious.

Not only that, but clowns like Ray Melick and Scardonkey write editorials with limited info, spew speculation like it's fact, and even speak of the tampering possibility (more like probability), but try to cast the bad light on Bama. Me, I'd be trying to follow up on the tampering possibility, if I were a responsible journalist, and not a joke. Now I am also a UAB fan, but this is ridiculous, and is making Birmingham look bad in my eyes (as if the News, or UAB athletics needs any help). It just wouldn't make sense for the back and forth flow to have been there (transfers UA <--> UAB), and all of sudden we tell a guy no for no good reason. I mean, we took on Taylor Britt from UAB, for goodness' sake. :rolleye2:

I say let him go wherever. In fact this goes for any athlete in any sport as far as I'm concerned.

Good grief, what, is this guy going to lead UAB to the final four or something??

If a kid wants to go, show him the door, always.

I understand your logic. Let me throw this in for discussion. I don't think any University wants a revolving door as far as a player playing for you for a couple of years and then if he gets his feathers ruffled or for selfish reasons he wants to leave and play down the street a couple of years. A coach makes his recruiting plans and stakes his future on signing a player having him for the duration of his Scholarship. Losing a big man at this time for us is a pretty big loss with only 15 or so players on scholarship. The rule is a NCAA rule. It is there for a reason. All Colleges and University's should adhere to the rule. For special circumstances the NCAA allows some flexibility at the colleges discretion (its not a guarantee or right).

Keep in mind that the new managing editor of The Snooze is also a barner.. So when boogs Cowlick and Scab get out their crayons anything they can color about Bama is going to be from a barner's point of view.

Knox Loses Appeal

Justin Knox lost his appeal before the UA committee. Although, it may not matter. Rumors are that UNC offered him the chance to play for them next year. I'd rather play for Roy Williams than Mike Davis.
