Kevin Turner Passed

Like a punch in the gut. It's not just that he died, we go one day, but what he had to endure his last years. That was messed up. One of favorites, know his family in is mourning and I will pray for them.

Kevin Turner was 4 1/2 months older than I am.

That's too damned young to die.

I will always see Kevin racing down the sidelines with THE critical play of the 1991 Iron Bowl, a 68 yard gainer on what was basically a safety valve.

You can go to the 5'30" mark and see our beloved 24.

RIP Kevin - your suffering is over.

I lost my brother-in-law to this horrible disease in 2012. I haven't seen anything worse in my life. God bless Kevin and his family!

Just got back into town to see this. I am praying for his family but know Kevin is at peace.

There was a documentary on ESPN about him a couple years ago. It was filmed over a period of several months and you could see his physical decline as the program went on. At the start, he was at a therapy session and was having the "dropsies" playing some marble game. He asked the therapist if there was any hope and she just said things like the games he was playing can only delay it, if at all.

Later they showed him driving and he had special grips on the steering wheel and at the end he needed help getting dressed. In one scene, he is visiting another ALS patient who is in the end stages. He was in bed and had to talk with a machine (like Steven Hawking uses). The guy was telling Kevin to fight the good fight, but that had to be tough for Kevin to see that, knowing that was the fate that awaited him.

Doesn't really matter what they call it - it was devastating, and cruel.

Just to bring it home: This is why the game has to go through some changes to make it safer. Not only is the game in serious danger of going away without a few minor but very needed changes, but more of the players we claim to love will die horrible deaths without those changes. I am saddened by his passing and that the game he loved took his life so early. We can longer claim ignorance. Demanding others suffer like he and his family for our entertainment is beyond selfish. I welcome sensible changes to make the game safer and I will enjoy it more knowing fewer people will suffer as a result.

I wonder what would happen if they started using lacrosse helmets instead? Somehow i think the players would totally change how they play.

They wouldn't. A lot of today's players want the highlights that come from hard hits and it's just easier to deliver a harder more fantastic blow if you use improper form. We have a beast of a linebacker who is a prime example. I love his play, but hope he changes before something similar happens to him.

I appreciate the intent of your post and certainly lament Kevin's passing and the related circumstances. However, I "demanded " nothing of Kevin or any other players; certainly not that they "suffer" for my entertainment. I feel sad but I don't feel selfish.

Perhaps you misunderstand. I am not referring to Mr. Turner's time at UA as this was not on the public radar then. I am referring to those who currently rail against rule changes that make the game safer by eliminating some hits, often claiming we may as well play flag football in the process. It's one thing to disagree with the implementation of safety measures. It's quite a different matter to disagree with safety measures because fewer damaging hits supposedly make the game less enjoyable. So if you aren't one of the people crying that protecting players ruins the game then we have no argument.
