Question: Kiffin - Can NCAA penalites follow the coach?

With regard to potential NCAA penalities, many are saying that Kiffin has jumped from the proverbial frying pan into the fire. Kiffin (and his little dog Orgeron) clearly played loose with NCAA rules during their stint with the Vols. It remains to be seen what penalities UT will suffer due to hostess-gate. Given my understanding of the coaching timeline, isn't it likely that team Kiffin-Orgeron also masterminded (or were aware of) the extra benefits that Reggie Bush received while at USC. Assume for the moment that the NCAA finds Kiffin and associates guilty of major penalities (at one or both institutions), can possible penalities follow the coach? I know this was the case with the basketball coach Kelvin Sampson.

Yes, I believe they can, and consider that Kiffin was the recruiting coordinator at USC when some of these alledged violations occurred. He could be walking into a probation mess at Uscum.

Ironically, institutions can mitigate some of the NCAA penalities by firing members of the coaching staff responsible for the violations. What does USC do now? They may have just hired the individual(s) responsible for the violations that will put them in NCAA hell.

I believe the only way this can happen is if the NCAA issues a "show cause" order, which requires institutions wishing to hire a sanctioned coach to "show cause" why the individual should be allowed to work there.

If UT is found guilty of major violations and no show cause order is issued, that coach is pretty much free to do whatever he wants, wherever he wants.

It's been done before. Kelvin Sampson committed major violations while at Oklahoma but the sanctions followed him to Indiana.

Man...talk about the fox guarding the henhouse. After stonewalling for years, this seems to be the ultimate "in your face" to the NZAA. Of course, it could be part of a plan between Mike Garret and the NZAA to save the football team. Get the main perpetrators together and then lower the boom.

Hamilton: we have no intention of giving any early enrollees a waiver to decommit from UT without penalty. Despite what Orgeron told them, they were locked into UT at 12:01 today whether they attended class or not.
I believe Indiana hired him right into the teeth of the "show cause." I don't know what they were thinking. The school can never win there, because you have to convince the very organization that blackballed the coach that he's an OK guy and you need him. The only way to read this is that the USC PTB feel they're above sanctions...
