Jonathan Atchison - Rivals profile

Per BOL, Douglass (GA) HS LB Jonathan Atchison has narrowed his college choices to Alabama and Auburn. He has favored us for a while...and Coach Lance Thompson is recruiting him pretty hard. Very athletic kid who has good size and speed. Has over 13 offers including LSU, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss State, Auburn and Vandy. A decision could possibly come by the end of the summer.

Ht: 6-foot-3
Wt: 216 lbs

I hope we get this young man, he would be a great addition. If we could ink Patrick, Johnson, Atchison, and Robinson (Jack), that one be one great haul at linebacker. Saban said previously that we won't fix our problems at linebacker until we recruit our way out of them, and that's the truth. Thankfully, it seems we are well on our way to doing just that.

And the fact that it's an Alabama v. Auburn battle, you have to love that. We haven't lost one of those in a very long while, and I suspect that if the coaches really put on the full-court press for Atchison, he won't change that either.

Why no offers from Georgia (his home state), Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, etc?

I would love to see him in crimson, I have heard a lot of good things about him here.

Is it just me or does it seem like a lot more Georgia players are deciding to play outside of Georgia this year? I can't imagine why, they have a good young team and are highly ranked. Then again the pull of the Tide can be strong.

The thing with Georgia...

This is a huge year for the state of Georgia in terms of talent being produced. However, for the University of Georgia, they are very limited in terms of scholarship numbers and will thus sign a very small class.

Now, granted, the class that they are signing looks incredible, the point remains that there simply isn't enough scholarships available to them to lock up much of the in-state talent that would otherwise go to UGA. The end result will be that a lot of very good football players end up leaving the state of Georgia -- Georgia Tech isn't really a major recruiting presence, and won't be able to take advantage of UGA's scholarship limitations on a large basis -- and playing out-of-state.

Just look at us... in "normal" years UGA would love to have kids like Warmack, but this year it's just not feasible. The same thing goes for Atchison and many others.

Good info, and coach Saban is there to capitalize on the opportunity.

I sure hope that scenario holds true with Johnnie Farms. He would cap a good crop of linemen coming to Bama out of the peach state.

Douglass LB Atchison mulling over Alabama, Auburn offers
Douglass linebacker Jonathan Atchison grew up liking Auburn football, but every day in practice he hears about the Alabama tradition.

Douglass assistant coach Allen Hollie, who played for the Crimson Tide, makes sure of that.

“He is always talking about the tradition and the mystique of Alabama football,” Atchison said. “There is no escaping it. I’ve always liked Auburn when I was growing up.”

And I thought I was giddy about the 2008 LB class. I think we'll have fully recruited ourselves out of the LB depth problem in two classes alone. We've just gotta wait for them to grow up.

Rivals rates Atchison as the #64 overall prospect in Georgia. Considering his offer list that seems low. I realize there is a ton of talent in Georgia, but it still seems he is rated low IMHO.

Crimson Confidential site says Atchison has made a decision between Bama and the barn. When is he going to announce?

Link
For what it's worth, on another thread, LCN highlighted this from the "Prospects Make Visits" article by Andrew Bone:

Atchison visited Tuscaloosa the same day as Smith with a decision for the 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker possibly on the horizon. Alabama and Auburn are battling for this verbal commitment.

Douglass High School assistant coach Don Cox commented after his star athlete’s trip to Tuscaloosa, “I know he likes Alabama a lot. The last three days at practice he has been wearing an Alabama t-shirt.”

You have got to like that. He announces he has come to a decision and he has been seen wearing an Alabama shirt at practice on three consecutive days. ;)

BOL is also reporting that a decision has likely been made in Atchinson's mind and that he has a strong hunch where he wants to go…but that he just wants to take officials to the Barn and T-town to be extra sure. You’ve gotta like our chances…
