Alabama Football Recruiting 2011 - ESPN
Rated No. 2 among outside linebackers by ESPNU, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound DePriest recorded 101 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, seven sacks, three fumble recoveries, 812 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns and kicked 13 extra points to earn all-state recognition as a junior.

DePriest posted a 4.79 40-yard dash, 4.35 20-yard shuttle and 32-inch vertical at the National Under Armour Combine in January.
DePriest picks Crimson Tide over Scarlet and Grey
DePriest’s decision ends months of speculation. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker was one of the most prized recruits in the nation. Ohio State, Alabama, Virginia Tech, LSU and Notre Dame — to name a few — all recruited him.

ESPN.com rated DePriest the nation’s 35th-best recruit. It described him as “a versatile player with excellent playing strength and the speed capable of making big plays at any time. Has the size for the outside linebacker position at the major level of competition.”

It seems to me that this commitment could be the key to this whole class.

I remember waiting out Andre Smith and then Julio, but they would not commit early enough to give a kick-impetus to the class, at least not as early as we wanted.

Yes, every year Saban starts out a little slow, bringing in a couple or three 3-stars from somewhere like Mobile. Then, halfway through the process he is into high gear -- which is about where he is right now, maybe a little beyond. He finishes up with a flourish.

This sort of thing is new for Alabama. Bringing in a Mark Ingram from Michigan and now the best linebacker in Ohio -- that never happened under Bear Bryant. You go into the maw of both Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes and pull out top ballplayers like that?

This is the sort of thing done in Florida and Los Angeles, where the athletes who have stars in their eyes go, whether for the sun and sand or Hollywood. Nick Saban has turned Alabama into a national recruiting base.

We are watching a phenomenon here. As another writer said, this guy could sell a catchup popsicle to a woman in a white dress.

SN100 LB DePriest chooses Alabama - Brian McLaughlin - The Recruitnik - Sporting News
Springfield (Ohio) LB Trey DePriest has decided to play for Alabama, he announced Friday afternoon. In recent days, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker had trimmed his list of finalists down to the Crimson Tide and Ohio State, with Florida and LSU being cut from the list recently.

DePriest is a member of the Sporting News Top 100 for the class of 2011. He has taken unofficial visits to Alabama and Ohio State in recent weeks.

Recruiting sites aside, his extensive offer lists indicate the ones who really know talent know DePriest is a top player and a difference maker.

During the recruiting process, DePriest grew especially close to Alabama assistant Sal Sunsuri and his son Vinnie, who is also committed to the Tide. This may have been what put Alabama over the top in this year's recruitment.

"The southern hospitality is real nice down there," DePriest said of Alabama. "Everyone talks about it, but once you see it for yourself you can understand it. Alabama has great tradition and a great coaching staff. They also have great academics."

The Ohio State coaching staff wanted one last shot this week, and DePriest took an unofficial visit Wednesday to the nearby campus.

The No. 3 linebacker in the country has numerous scholarship offers which also includes LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

I'm guessing that the staff probably don't see him as an impact player as a RB, but think he could be as a LB. So if he's dead set on playing RB, he'd be a wasted signee.
Yeah true, we seem to have other guys we've targeted at tailback. Wilder seemed to fall off our radar prett quick. Not to say their is any problems with him, probably just that they saw he'd be a hard pull from Florida or Florida State.

I agree. Some of the Buckeye fans are even jumping out of the Bleacher's to report on it. :D

I expected DePriest to head south, so that didn't surprise me. What did catch me off-guard was how positive the reaction was.

Obviously, the building was jammed with family and friends, so whatever school DePriest picked, the news would be good. But at the same time, Springfield is the heart of Buckeye country (Ohio State football is closer to a religion than a pastime here), and I had braced myself for DePriest's choice of 'Bama over the Bucks to be met with at least a smattering of boos.

I didn't hear any.

If this ends up being the LB signing class, it would be a great haul. If Bama adds another top LB prospect to this list it would be beyond great.

Linebackers:

:BigA: Commitments (4)
Shannon Brown - Adel, GA. (ALABAMA COMMITMENT)
Brent Calloway - Russellville, AL. (ALABAMA COMMITMENT)
Trey DePriest - Springfield, OH. (ALABAMA COMMITMENT)

These kinds of quotes are entirely hilarious to me from their fans and after hearing their monotone robot personalities that are called ohio state fans on the finebaum show it proves even more to the point. If they have ever been in the state of Alabama for over 5 mins then they would only realize just how little their supposed love of football is compared to Alabama fans is and how serious we take it here but they sure do talk a good game up in that state. Ohio state fans like football, Alabama fans live football 365 days a year, 24/7. They have NO CLUE or idea what they are talking about.

They're just respecting Trey's decision to come to Bama..They would've put OSU shirts on had he chose them..I think it pretty cool they're celebrating with Trey even though he chose Bama..JMO
I agree. I wonder if anyone in Alabama would wear another team's jersey if we had a five-star player who decided to go out of state. I'm glad they are supporting this young man and his decision, and I'm glad his decision was to come to Alabama. Roll Tide!

Surf, as usual, you nailed it. I'm guessing that we are done at LB if those guys stay firm with their commitments. It certainly appears that we are heading for another top-five recruiting class.

Top talent, top coaching and development, and top facilities should lead us to a lot of V-I-C-T-O-R-Y's in the future. We just have to make sure that no boosters do anything stupid to mess things up again.

Roll Tide!:BigA:

Careful Hal, you're talking about the best coach that ever lived. Joe Namath came from Beaver Falls, Penn. I never want to hear another word cutting Coach Bryant...Seems to me Coach Bryant could get anybody he wanted. If anybody ever says anything against "Bear" I don't care if I get banned, I will stand up...Don't take away from the topic of this post...:BigA:
