Les Miles fired according to Sunday reports

The last five years have been much different than the first five for Miles. Yes, overall he has an impressive record but the last five have shown a progressive pattern of decline with zero indications of it changing directions. How long do you stay with a guy who you now have five recent years of declining performance while other programs within your division have not only caught you but arguably have surpassed you (Ole Miss, Arkansas and to some degree aTm)? If LSU is truly "elite". They had to make a move. Elite programs do not sit around very long and allow "average"/mediocre to exist in their program. And the last five years there has been a steadily decline into mediocre under Miles' watch.

Les Miles to USC
Jimbo Fisher to LSU
Lane Kiffin to Oregon and takes Blake Barnett with him

Interesting and I could actually see all those things happening.

On CLK, I've been thinking with Oregon's struggles he'd be a perfect fit out there.

Wild card, as others have mentioned, is Hugh Freeze. He's proven he can play Bama tough and with his recent 2-1 record (that could have easily been 3-0) his phone will be ringing at several SEC schools when they open up.

And then, don't sleep on Dan Mullen and his quiet success he's had at Miss. St. With LSU's resources, I could see him being an "under the radar" kind of candidate.

If they can't get Herman or Fisher, I personally would take Freeze over Briles or Petrino. He recruits better athletes than either one of them (legally or not). He doesn't have the documented baggage of either of them (especially if Ole Miss beats the rap this time). And you take away the program he's built at Ole Miss on the assumption that they probably don't find anyone who would do as well or better.

Fedora would be an intriguing choice as well.

My line of thinking also. Both Briles and Petrino are seriously compromised, and have ethical question marks over their heads IMO. Next to a home run hire like Herman or Fisher, I really think Freeze would be a good fit in Baton Rouge and deep down I think he would be willing to crawl on broken glass all the way down I-55 if offered. With their in-state talent pool and resources, I think he would flourish at LSU. Fedora is another hot name in the coaching community, but as a lower tier candidate I can think of several others I'd offer before I would get to him.

I would venture to guess that LSU has PLAYED more ranked teams over that span that just about anybody else. Most of the SEC West is usually ranked and their annual East opponent Florida has been ranked more often than not, plus they usually play at least one quality non-conference game.
Maybe, but he WON the games. Georgia fans understand that playing ranked opponents doesn't help unless you win the games. Now Richt is at Miami.

Well done....

Except it sort of makes you feel like he passed away...

But, nice job
Thanks for posting - that was well done.

Per ESPN:

Since his first season at LSU in 2005, Les Miles has 42 wins over ranked opponents. In that span, only Nick Saban has more.

When's the last time Les Miles won a meaningful game? The 9-6 over Bama in 2011? That's the reason he got fired. Can't go 5-6 years without a victory that means something..

Really, it comes down to losses to one team during that period - Alabama. Wins in a few of those games probably has LSU in a few more national championship games, with probably another national championship win.

Sure, they lost other games, but most seasons in the last 5 years had LSU playing very well and highly ranked until they played Alabama. And many of those games were decided in the last few minutes.

Saban was better than Miles. That eventually became too much for everyone to accept.

You are right about Mullen but Freeze is going to stay with the Bears until they run him off. Fisher would be a fool to leave Freeshoes and I don't think Kiffin gets anything above a Colorado State type job. Regarding Les - I don't see USC opening up for him. I think he heads for a pay cut at a big ten type job.

I remember hearing Saban talk about the Richt and Miles situation and ponder what they'd do to him at Alabama if he lost a few games. That was sad to hear, but it does represent a new reality in the SEC. If you combine the past three seasons, Les Miles went 19-10. Admittedly, that's not great, but that's in the SEC West. Within the SEC West he was 10-8. Now, that's not great either but is that fired in mid-season bad? Remember, that's 19-8 and 10-6 if you remove Alabama from the equation.

Mack Brown goes 17-9 in his past two seasons and was out of work. His replacement has gone 13-15. It's really hard to top Mark Richt though, and I'd admit that he did some weird stuff at QB, but he goes 19-6 and gets fired. Truth is Kirby Smart will be lucky if he has that record over the next couple of seasons.

I think LSU feels good about their situation right now in terms of looking for a head coach, may be they imagine Herman or Jimbo coming in and they have greater success. The truth is though, it's easier to go down from where they are at now than up. There's going to be a dud in there somewhere once team's make their new hires, and it can take years to recover from that. This will be interesting to watch.

I wouldn't rule out Larry Fedora as a sleeper pick if they miss on their top choices. It would be a hire that would be very much in the mold of their original hire of Coach Saban.

8-4
7-6
6-7
11-3

Those are season records the last four years at NC with Fedora at the helm. (Not exactly Sabanesque)He finally broke out last year and had an outstanding season, but his entire body of work while there is sketchy at best. I don't think he would generate much buzz or enthusiasm in Baton Rouge. But, stranger things have happened.....

The thing about Kiffin that schools like LSU or Oregon might see is that he knows how to score points/coach qbs/run an offense. If LSU had a serviceable offense they'd be undefeated right now. There is still the question of does he know how to lead a program. But, a little osmosis surely has occurred in 3 years under CNS. Somebody will take a chance on him I think.

Yep. UGA, LSU et al are all looking to get a new coach that will take them to the next level. And they usually get what they ask for. The trouble is that they want to move to the next level up and they usually get the next level down.

Agree, though I think the big time programs will be careful about taking Kiffin until he proves he can be that leader at a smaller school IMHO.

In other news - seems everyone is speculating on Miles replacement - http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nca...lsu/ss-BBwCJ3R?li=BBnbfcL&ocid=LENDHP#image=1

HERMAN IS THE MAN THEY WANT ! . Believe this or not, Some in the circle have said ORGERON !!!! when my contact told me that, I laughed !!!! I said WHY FIRE MILES THEN ?

I would argue Les wouldn't have been fired if he had made changes to the offense in recent years. He never made changes. He said he was going to or did, but they never showed on the field.

What about Gundy? to LSU

Many think that Gundy is a lifer at Okie State, and count me as one of them. He has deep ties to the school(a native Oklahoman, having both played and coached in Stillwater), and he has turned down upward career moves before(Most notably the Tennessee job after Derek Dooley was fired). I happen to think he's a pretty good coach, but not top tier--which is what the LSU job should be able to attract.
