Gotta hand it to the Kiwis. They certainly showed the Italians about grit and organization. The Kiwi player who scored was played onside by the fact the ball hit an Italian defender otherwise he would have been offside. Technically, the penalty was a penalty because the Italian's shirt was being held but he went down VERY easily. If you look at the disallowed US goal, every US player was being mugged but that wasn't called. (By the way, the US game ref was the 4th official for this game!)

The New Zealanders, the Kiwis, are nicknamed the All Whites. This is nothing to do with racism. Their rugby team are world renown as the All Blacks and this was a way to distinguish the soccer team. (FYI their basketball team are called the Tall Whites).

Who would have thunk that the Kiwis would have an opportunity to go through to the knock out round if the cards fall right.

I know soccer is a very popular sport but I'd rather watch grass grow.....lol

But I do wish America well.

sip

I hear ya. My wife had a piano tuner come by the other day to spruce up the tuning on our old upright, while the match was on tv. We wound up sitting on the couch and watching the piano tuner do his work. Even though an activity like this reaches the snore zone with me, it was infinitely more entertaining than soccer, but I do wish our team well.

My big beef with soccer was always this-

I coached Little League Baseball for many years, and soccer was at the same exact time. The MOM's loved soccer.

One year a Mom told me that her son would probably not be able to play in the State Championship Series because he had soccer PRACTICE!!!

NOT a game....PRACTICE!

So from then on at Little League tryouts, when the kids walked on the field, I started asking.."Hey, do you play soccer"?

If they said yes I marked them of my possible draft list.

Nothing against the kids personally, I just didn't feel it was fair to the kids who devoted their time to baseball to have a potentially good player and team mate not showing up for games because soccer practice was a priority.

I'm sure there's a ton of former Little League coaches in this forum who faced the same thing.

sip

It still gripes me to see Slovenia sitting atop our group...

Exactly.

After seeing the title of this thread, I can't tell you how relieved I was to read the initial post *whew*.

Believe me, when I first heard the NZ soccer team referred to as the All Whites I was shocked until the reference was explained. Before an All Black rugby game, the players do a Maori dance/cheer and I had hoped the All Whites would have done something similar.

PS My son played soccer and baseball but PO'd the coaches of both teams because of missed practices so ended up dropping soccer the next year.

Terrific showing by the All Whites today, a very surprising result. There have been some great matches thus far in the tournament.

Hey sip, I repsect your right to not like soccer, but here is where I am with baseball. Growing up I enjoyed playing/watching baseball and softball. Today, about the only time I watch an entire baseball game is when I am in attendance. The s-l-o-w-n-e-s-s that the game has evolved into has set the game back for me. I've painted rooms, had them dry, and applied a second coat before an entire baseball game can be played today. The stepping out of the box after every pitch, the specialized pitching that requires numerous visits and pitching changes (often in the same inning), relaying the pitch from the dugout to the catcher to the pitcher, only to have him shake off the sign and have to do it all over again. I think Garciaparra was the worst ever at wasting time, took him forever to go through his "pre-pitch routine" and, even if he took the pitch, he'd go through it again for the next pitch. He has spawned a whole generation of them because they want to be just like him, or Jeter, today. I still enjoy the game, but should it really take 3.5 or 4+ hours to play a regulation game, especially one with a score of 3-2? End of rant, play ball.

hving a stepfather who is from New Zealand and is a former pro rugby player he has schooled me well in all things Kiwi. He had a group of his Kiwi friends over watching the match. Go Kiwi's.

the italians would be one of the best teams to watch if they didnt fall on the ground like a bunch of pansies every 2 secs. i still dont understand why the refs keep calling fouls for them.

I lived in Queenstown, New Zealand last year and loved it. There's one thing the Kiwis and the Americans have in common, it's their lack of interest in soccer. I love soccer, however the Kiwis really don't care about it, though they are tickled to death about their "victory".

I watched the whole match and were rooting very hard for the very over-matched All Whites. I really don't think they'll beat Paraguay but hey crazier things have happened.

If I want to zone out into a full blown comma, I turn on a professional baseball game.

Are you Letter-Man? I liked you in this episode when you saved this lady from being an Arkansas fan.

I for one absoutely love soccer. Watching the "good" teams especially, it's truly an artform to watch them work. They are the greatest athletes in the world when it comes to conditioning. If you like hockey at all, then you can get into soccer I believe. The schematics are similar in how the teams work together.
