He wanted the LSU job when Saban got it. His daughter...a hottie, I might add:drool5:...is a student at LSU. He's pretty much said he wanted the job at some point or another, but I don't know if it has been since Saban was here. I only know of the time before Saban was hired. What would make Del Rio want to move to the college ranks?
Seriously, I too had to ponder this question last December, and it was eventually answered. With Del Rio, I see a long time player in the NFL having some moderate success as an NFL coach. What is going to change his mind and his Pro mentality?
probably not, but it sure seemed like it - i was following the search pretty much as close as possible, heard ALL kinds of names and his had not been one of them when he came out and made that statement - it seemed out of the blue - i think to just about everyone on here - so that made it funny!!And Gray Tide and 37 bama grl, do you really think he just came right out of the blue when he said he wasn't interested in the Bama job?
Maybe it was...I don't know. Just seems odd for him.probably not, but it sure seemed like it - i was following the search pretty much as close as possible, heard ALL kinds of names and his had not been one of them when he came out and made that statement - it seemed out of the blue - i think to just about everyone on here - so that made it funny!!
at the time, I didn't want the job either and I said so publicly. Just wasn't a good fit for me at time. I was knee-deep in new homes and couldn't leave them unfinished. Once Saban retires, I might be ready.Maybe it was...I don't know. Just seems odd for him.
We went over a month without a head coach last year.I just don't get the Del Rio talk. LSU would have to go a month without a coach just to get a shot at him, and if he really wanted the LSU job, why didn't Bertman hire him last time around? Surely he would have hired him over Miles, and you cannot argue that the time-frame was a problem then because of how very late the LSU job came open at the end of 2004.
Moreover, two interesting points about Del Rio...
(1) He's a very laissez-fare head coach and that has resulted in a lot of off-field problems for his Jaguars. For example, Jacksonville is currently second in the NFL in ProFootballTalk's "Turd Watch," an index that ranks teams based on arrests and other legal incidents.
(2) He was an All-American linebacker at USC, and obviously he loves his alma mater very much. We all know how much LSU people loathe USC, so it would be interesting to see them give the job to a Trojan. Moreover, you have the same problem with him as you do with Miles. If he does well at LSU, and the USC job comes open -- something that will most likely happen in the next three-to-four years -- then he's going to be headed for LA.
Maybe I just don't get it, but I don't see Del Rio going to LSU, regardless of whether or not he has a daughter that goes there or what he has said previously.
Yes, obviously, we did, but that doesn't mean that is the ideal strategy. It worked out for us because Saban came, but had he not came we might have been royally screwed by trying that strategy. Also, it's a strategy that is very rarely used, and probably with good reason. Going without a head coach for over a month is generally not the best idea.We went over a month without a head coach last year.![]()
It might not have been as much him making the statement, just someone asking him in a press conference or a radio interview if he was interested and then the media taking it from there. Just speculating though. And Gray Tide and 37 bama grl, do you really think he just came right out of the blue when he said he wasn't interested in the Bama job?
After all was said and done, Mal said that, if Saban hadn't come, he would have take UA1 and flown on to Cuba...It worked out for us because Saban came, but had he not came we might have been royally screwed by trying that strategy.
BigEasyTider;745254If he does well at LSU said:What makes you think that Coach Carroll is slowing down to the point that he'll be gone in the next 3-4 years?
It's remotely possible that the Bush thing could drive him back to the pros. I wouldn't leave if I were him, unless the probation were to turn out to be something as severe as that which we received. What makes you think that Coach Carroll is slowing down to the point that he'll be gone in the next 3-4 years?
Well he wasn't really all that successful in the NFL, but he wasn't bad either (which makes him successful I guess in some circles in the NFL). He personally approached the USC AD when USC got "Thanks but no thanks" from Belotti at Oregon and Erickson at Oregon State (same Erickson that is at Arizona State now). I'm obviously a bit biased but I just find it really hard to believe that Carroll would return to the NFL. He did say that he wants complete and total control in the NFL and Huizenga gave him just about that and he still didn't bite. It's remotely possible that the Bush thing could drive him back to the pros. I wouldn't leave if I were him, unless the probation were to turn out to be something as severe as that which we received.
I know it wasn't yours. I was just responding to what you said.I guess I should add that the Carroll speculation isn't mine.
