LSU commitment makes me laugh

Yes I have thought this for some time. It is still very much possible to win at a high level for a sustained period of time. Perhaps not as much in the SEC, because it is so competitive. But even in the SEC, its possible to win 9 or 10 games a year. LSU has done it now for almost a decade. Florida and Georgia are awful close. Heck, even Auburn had a nice 5 year or so run. Alabama can do it again, its just that someone will have to take a step back. Looks like it'll be Auburn. Nothing makes me happier.;)

Well Heck Darn, UF has 2 NC....UGA has 0, AU has 0 and WE have 0, in the last 10 years. CGS was a long time ago....crap UT got one within the last 15 years.

LSU is a top tier program, there is NO doubt about that. Kudos to the Bengal Tigers. I am also very happy about our coaches role in their ascension, it's really encouraging to see he is now with us. Can they sustain that status though? This year will determine alot.

Being a huge Tide fan, lets start with last year :).

Florida: 13-1 (92.8%). 1 SEC title and a National title.
USC: 12-1 (92.3%). Pac 10 title and BCS bowl win.
Texas: 12-1 (92.3%). BCS bowl win.
Alabama: 12-2 (85.7%). SECCG loss, BCS bowl loss.
OSU: 10-3 (76.9%). Big Ten title, BCS bowl loss.
LSU: 8-5 (61.5%). Bowl win.

Interesting to see what next year brings...

I'd much rather see Bama and LSU take a step up and UF take a step down personally.

Another interesting point shown by your numbers: the myth that there will never be dominant teams like the 60s, 70s with Bama, OU, Neb, et al., is debunked. Note that of the 18 appearances in the BCS Champ game, 16 are from the 7 you list, the other 2 not being slouches: Neb and FSU. The more things change, the more they remain the same; just a few new faces. Bama is reclaiming a spot, Neb is trying, Miami is gone, LSU has likely slipped though not necessarily gone, OSU is like Neb of the 80s and early 90s, etc.

Virginia Tech has a BCS championship game appearance as well. The last decade has been pretty good to VT as well seeing us go 100-30. We lost quite a few winnable games in that stretch that cost us, but I am looking forward to what the next decade holds.

Your appearance was in the '99 season, the discussion is about the 00s. You do have a very fine program, but in most opinions, not quite the level of the 7 listed.

The guy that you quoted talk about the past decade and the 99 season is a part of that decade. Either way you are correct that VT is not viewed on the same level as those other programs based on the simple premise that we don't have a NC yet. If Frank is able to get one I think some perceptions might change, but we need to show up for the big games because it doesn't matter if you average 10 wins a season for a decade if you aren't performing underneath the big lights.

Beat top OOC opponents, quit losing to teams like ECU, and win even 1 national title and you might be considered a top 10 program. Look at that top 7...all have national titles in the past decade. Not a knock, but VT doesn't even have one in their history. You can beat all the Cinci's you want, but top tier programs win national titles.

Did you read what you quoted and responded to?

Nice job Saban Ball- LSwho will- in fact- be underdogs a few times this year- as they should be. Seriously- those tigers will end up with the same record as last year's version. You had the most talent in the country in 07 and got into the MNC game by default. You had the same record- when you won the National Championship- as we had last year.

Well, . . . LSU won the last two games. Winning the championship games is kind of important. :biggrin2:

You distinguished guys in Birmingham, those who come up with these great statistical tables, etc., have you ever lived in Louisiana? You don't have to answer. I can tell by what you say about LSU as to whether you have.

Please permit just an example of the kind of thing you would hear from LSU people about Alabama football were you to live there like I have. We as Alabama fans have heard it from Auburn fans too, that it wasn't Alabama who won all those games from 1958 til 1982 -- it was Bear Bryant who won them. Alabama just happened to be where Bear Bryant was when he won all those games.

Now, if you peruse Tigerrant.com, you will read about how LSU is one of the top-tier programs in the country -- just like these distinguished gentlemen are saying on this thread. Hey fellows, was LSU one of those top-tier programs before Saban got there? LSU people themselves will tell you what a down-time they went through with people like Curly Hallmann, Mike Archer, and even Gerry DiNardo and Jerry Stovall. Do you think that these same LSU people are going to admit to you that it was SABAN who made the difference over there?

ALL of us football fans twist the facts to fit our idea that our team is the best in the country. I'm sure it's easier to see it in the OTHER guy and his opinion of his team than it is to see it in ourselves and our team. But, man, I wish you would just take a look at some of their threads on Tigerrant lately. Alabama, according to some of them, is no threat this year because we have an untested quarterback, and if he goes down, there is no one to take over. Therefore Ole Miss is the team to beat in the West. LSU has solved their problems on defense with Chavis, and they have two QB's to take over for Jarrett Lee, therefore LSU will win the West.

"Statistics tell the story." Well, then, let's look at ALL the statistics, instead of just those over the past ten years, especially since we now have the coach here at Alabama that brought about the statistics at LSU that have been so eloquently presented here. College football history goes back further than ten years, anyhow, and from the longterm perspective, Alabama is up there, not LSU, and not Florida, really. USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas, Alabama -- THOSE, historically, are the top-tier teams. Yes, LSU had some great years in the late fifties, and some good years under coaches like Bernie Moore and Charley McClendon (who was fired). But does the overall record at LSU compare with that of Alabama?

This is why I think it is important that we contest this matter of the "vacating of wins". . . . .

...If ifs and buts were candy and nuts...
BUT, your point is our QB gift wrapped points for you guys, and you're right. Another QB might have done the same...but Lee made a habit of it last season. Of course, Flynn threw 3 picks in '07 against Bama...and if not for Hester, one of those was a pick 6.

Still, no matter what, anyone with common sense knows that...whether it's because of Saban or Miles...LSU is one of the top 5 programs this decade. They continue the incredible recruiting and winning that Saban started. To say Johnson better get used to being an underdog at LSU is laughable. That's like saying UF, tOSU, USC, OU, or TX need to get used to being an underdog. Rarely happens. However, when they are underdogs, I like their chances.
Very well written post, but sorry research...and off topic. As you can see, I pointed out that I for one freely admit that Saban got LSU on the path to success that continues today.
-
Furthermore, where in this thread is anyone talking about the history of college football? Who has questioned Alabama's place in CFB history?
-
This thread is all about now. Not about the history of college football. Storm Johnson will rarely be an underdog at LSU, unlike the original poster stated. If he is an underdog 3/4 times a year, so be it. But to act as though LSU is currently perrenniel underdogs is laughable. They're not, and usually when they are, they win. Whatever happened in the 90's has nothing to do with Storm Johnson. I guarantee he doesn't remember.

FWIW, I DO visit "tigerrant.com" occasionally...and I see PLENTY of criticism about LSU football, several posters who still wish Saban was coach, and constant armchair QBing. FWIW, they also complained when Saban WAS coach at LSU. Please do not associate "tigerrant.com" with LSU fans such as myself and Red 55. Thank you.
