Forgive me, I can't profess to have an in-depth knowledge of our 1960s or 1970s football teams like I do for the last two decades...but has any tailback had such an impressive start of his career as Mark Ingram. He's only 23 games into his career and he already has 2146 total yards and 23 total TDs...and he's only started 8 games in his career so a touchdown/game and nearly 90 yards/game is impressive.

Shaun Alexander even struggled to get on the field as early as Ingram because Stallings didn't like his pass blocking apparently.

Not trying to make statistical comparisons because I don't know right off the top of my head (and I'm too tired to Google it :)). But Kerry Goode was red hot early in his career before he got injured.

In my opinion, Goode had the most raw talent of any running back I've ever seen at Alabama.

I know this response isn't a true answer to your question, but I couldn't help but throw a plug towards Goode.

I'll agree with that. Kerry was a truly legitimate candidate for a Heisman had he not gotten injured. I tried a few weeks ago to get some Youtube footage of Goode for a friend but there is none to be had, unfortunately.

Kerry had a very nice freshman season, playing in all 11 regular season games, 693 yards rushing on 103 carries

Here is a link at the top of page 6 it lists the rushing records, believe it or not Terry Grant is #1 and Goode is #2, Grant had about 73 more attempts for 198 more yds.

Alabama Beats Rival Auburn 36 to ZERO

What could have been. :(

Wasn't Goode injured during the Bama/Boston College game in Birmingham around 1980? I remember that horrible game. Doug Flutie was their quarterback and we came out kicking butt. Then Goode got injured and we ended up getting beat. At least thats the way I recall it. :(

But then, it was a looong time ago

83 or 84, I think. He had something like 200 all-purpose yards at halftime, then blew out his knee on the first play of the second half.

I've always wanted to watch the first half of that game. I was too young to really remember it. My Dad has always said that Kerry Goode was the most talented RB Alabama has ever had until he blew out his knee.

I'd rate Goode and Patrick as a toss-up for the most potential, both were extremely blessed with unreal ability.

I don't know what Bobby Marlow did his 1st two years, (Couldn't play as a freshman.) but he had 2,604 yards on 408 carries and 26 TDs for a career average per carry of 6.4 yards. Never stopped for a loss.

Before I even read the resposes to the OP I thought about Goode too! I remember that game against BC...I think it was the kickoff classic (as it was called back in those days) and I thought it was played in the old giants stadium in the meadowlands (but I'm not sure). I believe that game was the first of his soph. season and we were truly robbed of seeing what could have been one of the best Bama backs of all time after he blew out his knee. What a shame!

If Linnie Patrick could have stayed out of the Bear's doghouse who knows how that may have turned out.

Mark is on pace to set records at Bama. He has 1,148 rushing yards this season and 1,876 rushing yards for his career. By the time he finishes his Bama career his name will be right there with Shaun Alexander and Bobby Humphrey. He has a chance to break Bobby Humphrey's record of 1,471 rushing yards in a season, and to break Shaun Alexander's record of 3,565 rushing yards for a career. If Mark averages 107 yards over the next 3 games he could break Bobby's record before the SECCG. Since post season counts now Mark is on pace to crush the record.

Mark also needs 1,689 yards to break the career record. With all of next season to go he is on pace to break this record as well. Throw in his 246 rushing yards against USCe, which is 3rd all time in rushing yards in a game, and Mark is going to be remembered as a legend at the Capstone.

I haven't looked up the actual stats, but from a pure "awesomeness" upon their arrival point of view, Bobby Humphrey, Gene Jelks and Kerry Goode are hard to beat.
Recruiting classes 83-86

Ray Perkins 85 Class was lethal, besides two five star backs, Humphries
and Jelks, even a three star linebacker turned out pretty good(Derrick Thomas)

I also noticed that Shula was listed as a 5 star recruit in 83, I didn't realize he was so highly recruited. Kerry was a four star for some reason. I don't believe the legend of Town Creek was in full effect yet.

What ever happened to the Town Creek Pipeline?

The BC game was at Legion Field in 84. Alabama did play in a Kickoff Classic in 86 against Ohio State winning 16-10 I believe. Goode had about 290 yards before being hurt. I have hated artificial turf ever since.
