Bama Game Thread: MBB Bama hosts Purdue - Thu Nov 13 6p CST ESPN2

Can it? Rebounding is about hustle, something you can’t coach into players. Shot went up, our guys stood there to get grabbed (no calls btw) by Purdue. Move! Make the ref make the call.

Smith is the pavia of college basketball.
It's effort, not talent. Even peer pressure can improve effort.
That doesn't mean it will, but I am hopeful.

Bama wins tonight with just a few more rebounds. That should hurt some feelings.

Philon played poorly but the rest did pretty well. We would have beaten almost any team playing like this even with the big rebound difference. Disappointing to lose but think this game will help them toughen up a little and good experience for freshmen. Defense got better and we didn’t turn the ball over much which is big. Hate losing though. Bama is a legit top 10 team this year.

Their size defensively pretty much took our shots at the rim off the table. They chose to give up the threes and eventually we couldn't keep up our first half success. Not discouraged in the least bit.

We get longer and they get even longer. I dont know or where teams are finding such tall players. I dont really know how you best those guys.

The difference to me was the 2 bad 3pt shots by Williamson and missing the front end of the 1n1 by Philon. Williamson needs to play tougher, not very athletic imo.

Mr. Philon got a cram-fest on playing point guard last night. I’m a fan of Braden Smith but that is the best I’ve ever seen him play. Their front court is far more skilled than I remembered. Fine team.

We shot 50% from 3 in the first half. I told my wife that I bet we wouldn't keep that up in the 2nd half. We shot 25% in the 2nd.

It was a fun game to attend though.

Purdue IS a basketball school and have been for years. I did just a little digging from the majority of my lifetime and they have always been relevant in the big 10 and men's basketball.
Coaching:
65-72 George King 109-64
72-78 Fred Schaus 105-59
78-80 Lee Rose 50-18
80-05 Gene Keady 512-270
05-today Matt Painter 447-203

Some Notable Players:
John Wooden- yep, that one
Rick Mount
Terry Dischinger
Joe Barry Carroll
Gleen Robinson
Brad Miller
Robbie Hummel
Zach Eady
Jaden Ivey
Braden Smith

" I think they're one of the most disciplined teams (in the nation)." Oats (CNO)
"They outrebounded us by 24, that's embarrassing." CNO
"Purdue dominated the rebounding effort, grabbing 52 boards (19 offensive) compared to 28 (7 offensive) from the Tide" Stats

This is exactly the type of games we need to be playing early in the year bc it allows CNO and staff to see what is working, what is not, player rotations on the floor and etc...

I've had a sore spot against Purdue since the early 90s when they knocked off Alabama's best team post-Wimp in the 2nd round of the ncaas. This was when we had McDyess and Roy Rogers on the front court. They had Glen Robinson.

Oh well. It is only the third game. I hate losing at home, but hopefully it helps us build up what we need to be prior to the conference schedule. This run of games is brutal though.

While I prefer if we would have won this game, this loss is probably more valuable RIGHT NOW than a win.

We've seen the enemy and now we know what it'll take to win a game like this.

Rebounding is the low-hanging fruit. It's true, but playing the type of offense we do, we will rarely ever OUT-rebound teams like this. I mean, we only lost by 7 and got outrebounded by 25. YES, we have to be better on the boards...BUT...

We are a guard-oriented offense. Our guards did not play well in this game. Offensively AND defensively. On offense, Hollaway was the exception, but Philon and Wrightsell struggled...honestly, they were terrible. The fact we only lost by 7 with the way Philon and Wrightsell played is almost the bigger story. And on defense, the #1 reason we lost this game is we got owned on the high screen pick ALL night. Their 5' 10" PG had wide open 3s all night long and hit most of them. We NEVER adjusted the whole game. To me, that's on CNO as much as the players.

So, hold their PG to fewer points (think he had 29) AND if our guards play better we still win this game despite getting out-rebounded by 25.

I'm sure we all realize that. It's the lessons you learn in November that helps dictate how you play in March though.
I was chatting with a co-worker during lunch and he mentioned all the years we would look like world beaters in the early going before conference play started only to find out we hadn't played anyone. Oats builds the team with strong early tests and we're ready when conference play opens. RTR
