The recent discussion here on Tidefans.com only reinforces what me and my friend Jake have decided to do, and that's attempt to create an entirely new student section, one full of excited fans who actually plan on bringing energy and life to Bryant-Denny.

It's become apparent to us that the Alabama Yell Crew (who half the students have never heard of) is not cut out to be the official Alabama student section. We applaud their efforts in attempting to raise the energy level, but it doesn't seem to be working. Unfortunately, as was the case this year, I see the Yell Crew sitting down just as much as other students who become disinterested after the first half of the game. I'm not suggesting we completely throw out Yell Crew, in fact, quite the opposite. Those who wish to remain in Yell Crew should indeed do so, but those wishing for something more should join the new student section, Mike's Maniacs.

Allow me to explain...

We wish to bring to Bryant-Denny the same sense of energy, excitement, and craziness that you can find at other college stadiums around the country, and even some NFL teams. Stadiums that provide such unbelievable home field advantage to their teams such as the Oakland Raider's Black Hole, Texas A&M's 12th Man, the Dog Pound of the Cleveland Browns, and the general excitement seen in every game played by LSU in Baton Rogue and in the Swamp at Florida. While we believe Alabama is home to the greatest fans outside of the stadium, for some reason once the game begins the energy level drops. We want the crazy fans that dress up in wigs, obnoxious hats, painted faces, etc. Where are these fans at Bryant-Denny? Answer: They are few and far between, and we want to bring them together.

We are currently in the beginning phases of starting the group. We are at this time securing shirts to sell to be worn at every Bama football game. They will cost no more than five to six dollars for students. We are also considering opening up the selling of these shirts to alumni or fans in general outside the student section. The only negative we see to doing this is being unable to guarantee these fans will indeed be standing during the entire game and giving it their all.

Lastly, we welcome every suggestion you can possibly give us. We realize this is going to be a hard project. By next year however, we hope to be firmly established as a fantastic student section. For any students out there who would like to join, please e-mail us at our address, TheStudentSection@gmail.com. If you are outside the student body and wish to be a part of the process, please let us know as well. Thanks again, and ROLL TIDE!!!!!

It's a good idea for students sectiions who have been lacking

UT's students had gotten worse over the past 3-4 years, so last year they started the Big Orange Nation...This group gets a section blocked off, they all get BON shirts, and they are VERY loud...I was glad to see it happen...It looks good on TV and it's good to have the students back in the game for ALL the games...It seems when I left school, it just went downhill

If you can get it passed at UA, I would recommend it

It seems you were very aware of the Yell Crew, but did you ever bother to join?

I totally agree the student section needs help, but your goals are the exact same as the Yell Crew's were back in 2001. The problem is that everyone looks at games as a social scene and they don't want to have to wear a certain shirt or sit in a certain area. It sucks, but that's Alabama.

I applaud your effort, and certainly hope that you succeed, but AYC's original president was an extremely qualified leader and organizer and it was very difficult getting more than several hundred in the Yell Crew section. It' just going to be a matter of finding a very creative method of recruiting thousands of ENERGETIC student members. Offering a T-shirt simply does not get it done.

Good luck, though!

Some suggestions...

I am not crazy about the name...

But being from Texas, and growing up about an hour away from the A@M campus, I love that it is not called the Yell Crew. That name is theirs and they can have it.

Also, have your hot, girl members go to the game in bikini tops. I think it will get more people excited to be at a 'bama game.

Shirt idea...

I dont think you will get very far getting students excited over wearing a shirt. This isnt basketball.

What you need to do is promote drinking in your section. Then you will see a huge difference...
Eventhough I wasnt in a fraternity I always sat near or in the fraternity during the games. It was always the most fun, excitable section during any game. Rival or non-rival.

That meant to be funny...

Sorry if I offended anyone.

I have seen that at other campuses (LSU, Florida) but never ours.

Why does this "standing during the entire game" keep coming up? It's just a stupid idea. I take my children, father and grandfather to games. They phsyically can't do it. I have to request people in front of us to sit down so they can see the game. Most are accommodating, but several have had the unfortunate experience of being visited by police officers (at my request) who don't take no for an answer. Please remember to be courteous and thoughtful to those around you. The benches are there for a reason.

Bojo,

I think he meant the student section only. And if you are in the student section and can't stand, you probably had too much coke with whatever you snuck into the stadium.

To answer your first question, yes is the answer. I joined it last year during my freshman year and did not re-sign up this year. Yell Crew in my opinion is not organized in a way that allows all students to play an equal part, and they don't encourage enough cheers and straight up yelling. They are more concerned with their "officers" than the plain members. If I recall correctly it cost ten dollars to join as a normal member with nothing but a t-shirt, and it cost around sixty to seventy dollars to become an "officer" so that you could supposedly make decisions on behalf of the organization. It seems to me Yell Crew is more interested in running the big "A" flag on the field before the game and after the game than anything else.

I agree with you and thank you for your suggestion that we need to find a creative method of recruiting A LOT more students than AYC has been able too. I can tell you that it's not going to cost someone over $50 to become someone of importance in Mike's Maniacs. Five to six dollars gets you the shirt and your in, and you can attend every meeting that we may have. We're currently in the process of publicizing the new section, and we do realize it will take a lot of work.

You also said, "It sucks, but that's Alabama." I refuse to accept that, and that's why we are starting this section. As of right now, your right, there's not enough yelling for the team and more socializing going on than anything, but we are determined to change that. Thanks for wishing us luck, we're definately going to try our hardest.

While I was directing most of this at the students, I still have to disagree with you. If anyone pays for a ticket, they can do whatever they want in their given space, and I myself would prefer they stand to help the team. If you don't want to stand, why not remain at home in the comfort of your living room, sitting on a recliner watching the game on PPV or whatever else the game is on? That's a better seat for comfort and closeness of the action.

I have to admit if you asked me to sit down I might do it, but I'd definately do it grudgingly. You don't have any more right to my space in the stadium than I do... I bought that ticket and that's my spot. Sorry to sound harsh, but that's truly the way I feel. People who attend the games generally should get into the action instead of taking a passive approach. What's the point in attending if you don't want to get into it?

And I'm not suggesting that older people not attend games. I am however asking you to understand that if they come, they need to be prepared that people may just be excited enough about the game to stand up.

Do you have a problem with people standing at crucial times during the game (i.e. the opposing team going for it on 4th down, the opposing team deep in their own territory, or when we score a touchdown or make an interception)??? I can understand your beef with someone standing the entire game, but we need to get up off our butts and make some noise when the team needs it!!!!!!

The sit down crowd is the reason why people laugh at BD as an intimidating stadium. Dont shoot the messanger.

No problem at all with standing during important parts of the game. I do it myself, even when watching on TV.

My only point is that when you buy a ticket to a game, movie, opera, etc. You are buying a seat, not standing room. By sitting, all that bought seats can see the game. I'm 6' 3" if someone behind me isn't, they're not gonna see a lot of the game. If I have to put my son on my shoulders I just became 8', now I'm blocking several rows behind me. Have fun, yell your head off, just be considerate of others.
