MLB 2011 Draft starts tonight

Emeel Salem?

Edit: Read over the "recruit" part of your question. In that case, I have no idea.

JoJo - My guess is Josh Baker, who was here for just one year before transferring back home to Rice. 4th rounder in 2001

LHP Taylor Guilbeau, a signee, drafted in the 39th by the Yankees.

Had he been drafted in the 39th by the Royals or Pirates, I wouldn't be as worried.

The Yankees took Judd Golsan, an outfielder from Mountain Brook who was committed to UA, in the late 30s (perhaps even 40s) a couple of years back, and he signed of course. It was a shame, really, he would have been a solid college baseball player, especially once he got in the weight room.

The main thing that makes me feel better is I looked at the Yanks picks from rounds 30+ last year and the only guys to sign were guys who were seniors in college and really had no other choice.

Golson was taken in the 31st round in 2009.

Was baker the guy who made it to the majors and blew his arm out within his second year? Threw hard but lost all his pitches after arm problems? Also, is it true that we signed (not recruited but signed) both Brian McCann and Craig Kimbrel? And the Braves got both as early round draftees?

Don't know about the first part, but you are correct about McCann and Kimbrel. They also took Kyle Cofield from us back in '05, and Lipka last year, and I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting about.

I knew about Lipka. I think McCann was drafted in '03 so if he would have come to Bama and stayed 4 years, he would have been on the '07 team. Wow. I know it never happened nor would he have stayed 4 years but gees the draft has killed us over the last 10 years...

Baker went to Rice, but never got in the weekend rotation behind high draft picks Wade Townsend, Phil Humber and Jeff Niemann.

He was probably drafted after a couple of years there, but I don't think he lasted very long in the minors. Spent most of his freshman year here hurt if I remember right, but was the Saturday starter before then.

Baker was the forgotten fourth starter on Rice's 2003 CWS Championship team behind The Big Three of Jeff Niemann, Wade Townsend, and Philip Humber. He was drafted in the 4th round again in 2004, but never advanced beyond Class A and has been out of baseball since 2007.

As for Alabama signees who never made it to school, you can also add the following big leaguers to the lost with Kimbrel and McCann: Jack Cust (Seattle), Jesse Litsch (Toronto), and Jorge Posada.

Yeah, and since signing Golsan has spent the past two years really knocking the cover off the ball with the Rookie-level GCL Yankees: .206/.296/.241.

Should have come to Tuscaloosa, because he's never going to see The Bronx.

I wonder how that kid from Hokes Bluff is doing with the Braves? I can't think of his name at the moment, but he was an aub commit and taken really high (2nd round maybe?) a few years back. Put up ridiculous numbers in high school but I feel like I heard he was struggling pretty bad. /random thought

Our MIF should be pretty solid-superb next year with Reaves and Roberts...at least I hope.

Just a few more,

Most 98% of High School draft picks go straight to Rookie ball and it sucks!

There is normally only one or two people there at their games and they are picking up trash.

GO TO SCHOOL! Most of these guys can't pass a Music class so they take their 50 grand and wash out after a couple of years.

Niemann was the guy from Rice I was thinking of that got to the majors and then arm problems quickly derailed him. It seems the theory used to be that if a kid had a choice between college ball and professional ball, the kid should go pro. The instruction he got was the best and far above anything in the college ranks. Skip Bertman was one who even held the philosophy in the early 90's. But as time has gone by, it seems many think the instruction the kids in college today get is comparable to the rookie level pro ranks. I am not sure about a rookie league season but do they not play just about every day over the course of 4 to 6 months? Roughly 120 to 125 ballgames?
